WRANGLER NFR RECAP

Wright Shines Again

BY PRCA STAFF F or the second straight year, StetsonWright left the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo as a two-time world champion. In the 2021Wrangler NFR presented by Teton Ridge there was a new twist. After winning the all-around and bull riding world titles in 2020, Wright won the all-around and saddle bronc riding crowns in 2021 Saturday night, before 17,373 fans at theThomas &Mack Center. Wright finished the season with a PRCA regular season record of $686,513. He won the all-around title with a record $585,850. He was the saddle bronc riding champ with $343,524. This was Wright’s third all-around title in a row, and he broke Trevor Brazile’s PRCA record for most money won in a season at $518,011, which he accomplished in 2015. “I feel really good about it (breaking the record),” Wright said. “To break any record at all, it’s special, and especially when it comes to Trevor (Brazile) because he is the best to do it. So, to break one of his records, it’s pretty special.” In saddle bronc riding, Wright Stetson wins all-around and saddle bronc

had to have a bunch of the pieces of the puzzle come together in Round 10 and they did. Wright won Round 10 with a round-record tying ride of 93 points on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Vitalix Ricky Bobby.

BAREBACK RIDER FEILD MAKES MORE PRCA HISTORY Kaycee Feild is the greatest bareback rider in PRCA history. The Genola, Utah, cowboy made that a reality when he won his sixth bareback world championship at the 2021Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge Saturday night at theThomas &Mack Center. Feild finished the season atop the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $357,420. Jess Pope finished second with $340,499. “This is a numb feeling,” Feild said. “Honestly, I’ve dreamed about giving this speech a lot. I really have. It is an unreal feeling. What’s most important to me is my family and having them here and experiencing this with me. Then,

That earned him $26,997 and it pushed him to an eighth-place check in the average, which earned him $6,532. The combination allowed him to edge his brother Ryder, the 2020 saddle bronc riding world champ, who finished the season with $342,337. “I’m not going to lie, when they told me I won it, I looked at Ryder and I said I came in here to play defense for you tonight,” Stetson said. “I didn’t know I even had a chance, but I guess as long as there’s still rounds there’s always a chance.”

the records I’m breaking and putting my name down in history which will last a lot longer than I’m alive. That’s much more valuable than any business or any piece of land, I could leave for my kids. “The Feild name, the Feild legacy that my dad (late ProRodeo Hall of Famer Lewis Feild) started is something I’m very proud of. I’m very proud of the heritage and legacy and everything that represents. This is a very big one for me. It’s hard to talk to tell you the truth. It is a lot of fun.” Feild has won world championships in 2011-14 and 2019-20. He broke the all-time bareback riding world championship tie at five with ProRodeo Hall of Famers Joe Alexander and Bruce Ford. Feild clinched his latest title with his 89.5-point ride on Pickett Pro Rodeo’s New Scarlet. That placed him second in the round, which earned him $21,336. He also placed second in the average with 872.5 points on 10 head. Pope won the average with 873 points and collected $69,234, but Feild earned $56,171 to hold off Pope. Feild also won the RAMTop Gun Award with $231,564. The Top Gun Award goes to the NFR contestant who wins the most money in one event not counting ground money. WAGUESPACK NABS THIRD STEER WRESTLING TITLE Tyler Waguespack is back on PRCA’s championship throne. The Gonzales, La., cowboy won his third world championship by earning $289,791. Waguespack, who also won world crowns in 2016 and 2018, finished third in Round 10 with a 4.2-second run to collect $16,111 and then finished second in the average with a 48.1-second time on 10 head to earn $56,171. Will Lummus, who won the average, finished second in the world standings with $248,168. “This one I think is a little bit better, I felt like I came out of nowhere after having that broken barrier (in Round 2 with a 13.1-second run),” Waguespack said. “I just had to keep my foot on the gas and had to keep winning every single round. At no point in the 10 rounds did I safety up, it was full steam ahead all the way.”

Smidt clocked a 7.8-second time in Round 10 to secure his third world title and third NFR average title. The Texas cowboy finished his season with $318,455. Smidt also won world championships and average titles in 2015 and 2018. “I had a great calf tonight,” Smidt said. “They placed on her twice, I think. She was awesome and my horse was lights out all week, he has been great. He’s gave me a chance all week from slow calves to fast calves, he gives me a chance every time I back in there. There was lots of praying that week and God came through in all 10 rounds and I’m just blessed to be here.” Smidt won the average with 83.1 seconds on 10 head. TEAM ROPERS DRIGGERS AND NOGUEIRA WIN GOLD The wait is over for standout team ropers Kaleb Driggers and Junior Nogueira. The duo won their first team roping header and team roping heeler world titles. Driggers finished with $263,227 and Nogueira earned $277,612. Back in 2016, Nogueira became the first Brazilian world champion in PRCA history by winning the all-around world title. He now becomes the first Brazilian to win a team roping world championship. “This is awesome to achieve this dream,” Nogueira said. “We have been really close and worked really hard to do this. If God’s not in control and he’s not out in the front it is not our time. We have been here before and had the experience and Kaleb did a great job like always. I wanted to heel behind this guy, and I think God put us together for us a reason and I want to glorify God for this title.” Driggers and Nogueira finished third in the average with a 52.6-second time on nine head. They had a 7.1-second time in Round 10 to secure their titles. “We have been in this situation a lot and to finally have it go our way is amazing,” Driggers said. “I’m kind of a numbers guy so I kind of had it all mapped out and knew what we needed to be. Until they came back and told us we had won we still were not sure just because I have been so close so many times. I have been runner-up to the world champion four times and to finally get over the hump is great and without God we would not be here.”

KIMZEY ADDS SEVENTH WORLD TITLE TO HIS COLLECTION

Sage Kimzey is once again atop PRCA’s bull riding

mountain.

Kimzey captured his seventh bull riding world championship in eight years, earning $411,465. Kimzey only trails Don Gay who finished his career with a PRCA record eight bull riding world championships. Kimzey won third in the average and held off Josh Frost, who finished second in the world standings with $363,353. Kimzey clinched his crown by splitting second in Round 10 with his 88-point ride on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Greeley Hat Works Centerfold. “Yeah, I mean it was a long 10 days for sure,” Kimzey said. “But it’s the best 10 days of our lives every year so it’s just fun. There’s a lot of ups and downs but at the end of the day it’s the NFR.” Kimzey finished fifth in the world standings a year ago and was thrilled to be a world champ again. “For sure, I wanted to be at the top always,” Kimzey said. “It was one of those things where last year didn’t go as planned so I just get back on, try harder, and do better.”

PRCA OVERVIEW

From the CEO BY TRACY RENCK T he PRCA had a change at the top when TomGlause was named its Chief Executive Officer on Oct. 8. Glause talked about the path he took to the position he’s in as well as what the sport of rodeo has to do to move forward in these still challenging times when he spoke to rodeo committees during the State of the PRCA address at the South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa Grand Ballroom, Nov. 30, in Las Vegas. “I tell everyone I’m a cowboy at heart and a lawyer by trade,” Glause said. “The theme for this year’s State of the PRCA is Back in the Saddle Again. The storyline for 2021 for me is the record crowds we experienced at all our rodeos both small and large. That gives me hope that ProRodeo will prosper and we are resilient and no matter what letter in the Greek alphabet that they name the next variant of the coronavirus after, we will continue to be resolvent. We have what America is looking for and we will continue to deliver, and we will prosper into the future.” Glause initially joined the PRCA staff in Colorado Springs, Colo., as Chief Operating Officer and Director of Rodeo Administration on May 15, 2019. Glause brings 30 years of experience in both the public and private sectors as an executive leader and attorney with a strong financial background. Glause’s son, Seth is a four-time National Finals Rodeo qualifying bull rider “I first joined the PRCA in 1983 and I’m a proud Gold Card member,” the elder Glause said. Glause said the mission of the PRCA is to unify the membership, provide an innovative fan experience, grow the sport of rodeo, and provide opportunities for membership and sponsors. “The vision is simply the best cowboys, the best rodeos, delivering the best fan experience while positively impacting our communities and embracing our spirit of the west,” Glause said. “We also want to review our core values. We are constantly trying to find new ways to find new efficiencies. This doesn’t always mean having the latest version of the newest software. It sometimes involves what I refer to as cowboy ingenuity and figuring out the most efficient way to get the job done.” Growth in participants in ProRodeo is something Glause also discussed. “In 2019, we thought we turned the corner as we saw the first positive growth in membership in over a decade and our membership numbers climbed,” he said. “I will always have this number engrained in my head 6,350. We thought that was a great number to build on. Then, March 8 (2020), Houston was shut down and COVID reared its ugly face in 2020 and our membership fell to about 5,500 members. “It was a year of two tales. Our membership started out strong 2020 and we were paralleling 2019 numbers and as COVID came our membership declined. I was in disbelief to be honest that COVID would linger and continue to linger into today. It lingered into the beginning of 2021, and we didn’t see the bump we expected in growth. Our members were slow to renew in 2021, but as we continued to have more rodeos more and more members came back and renewed their membership. We have not got to 2019 levels, but we exceeded 2020 in every event. We will continue to focus on membership growth and retention, and we are on the right path.” Glause went onto to speak about the importance of revenue for the PRCA. “We have to drive revenue,” he said. “Without revenue we can’t continue to prosper, and we have driven revenue to where we will have over $34 million

Glause addresses past, optimistic about the future

forecast in revenue for 2021. That will be the best year ever in terms of revenue for the PRCA.” Glause said there were well over 600 events in 2021 and the payout is back to 2019 levels. “We will be over $50 million after the NFR, which is nearly double our regular season payout from last year,” Glause said. “Those are impressive numbers we are proud of, but we are going to continue to find ways to put more money back into the rodeos.” Some of the successes Glause cited in 2021 was the return of the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo to Kissimmee, Fla., after it moved to Greeley, Colo., because of COVID-19 restrictions in 2020. There also were a number of special sections in the roughstock at rodeos, including Odessa, Texas, Arcadia, Fla., Montgomery, Ala., Redmond, Ore., and Gooding, Idaho. The ProRodeo Tour Finale had a new home at California Rodeo Salinas. “Over $1 million was paid out to our members at that single rodeo,” Glause said. The PRCA Xtreme Bulls Finale moved to Pendleton, Ore., with a total payout more than $110,000. The PRCA Xtreme Bronc Finals in Rapid City, S.D., paid out more than $100,000. “No discussion would be complete without talking about breakaway roping,” Glause said. “The PRCA and the WPRA entered into a joint agreement to jointly promote breakaway roping. We had over 212 rodeos that hosted breakaway roping. That’s up over 300 percent from 2020 when we had 62 events with breakaway roping. “Over 11,000 total entries in breakaway roping and total payout was over $2 million compared to $600,000, again it grew by threefold in one short year.” Glause also brought up the PRCA’s partnership with Rural Media Group that began in 2020. ProRodeo content and coverage expanded growing ProRodeo viewership. ProRodeo performances were livestreamed on the PRCA on Cowboy Channel Plus app, and NFR coverage onThe Cowboy Channel, the PRCA on Cowboy Channel Plus app and RFD-TV.

ALL-AROUND COWBOY WORLD CHAMPION

Stetson Wright celebrates his Round 8 bull riding win. Click Thompson photo

Stacking Gold Buckles

Brazile, the King of Cowboys, won a PRCA-record 26 world championships, including 14 all-around gold buckles. “It’s awesome, I mean Trevor is the greatest there’s ever been in the sport of rodeo,” Wright said. “So, to have my name next to him it’s pretty awesome. “I think this (all-around) title may mean a little bit more to me with winning the saddle bronc as well. For so long I wanted to follow in my dad and brothers’ footsteps as a world champion, now I can say I’ve done just that.” Wright finished the season with a PRCA regular season record of $686,513, winning the all-around title with a record $585,850, which broke Trevor Brazile’s PRCA record for most money won in a season at $518,011, which he accomplished in 2015 “I feel really good about it (breaking the record),” he said. “To break any record at all, it’s special, and especially when it comes to Trevor (Brazile) because he is the best to do it. To break one of his records, it’s pretty special.”

He was the saddle bronc riding champ as well with $343,524, edging out his brother Ryder Wright by just more than a thousand dollars. Wright had to have a bunch of the pieces of the puzzle come together in Round 10 and they did. Wright won Round 10 with a round-record tying ride of 93 points on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Vitalix Ricky Bobby. “I didn’t know I even had a chance coming into that final round, but I guess as long as there’s still rounds there’s always a chance,” Wright said. Wright took some time to relish in his accomplishments once the Finals wrapped up, but quickly shifted his focus to the 2022 season and finding a way to build on his already impressive legacy in ProRodeo. “I’m as satisfied and happy as I can be right now with these world championships, I can hardly put it into words,” he said. “But I still have a lot more I want to accomplish in this sport. So, it’s time to get back to work, the new season starts tomorrow and I’m ready to get after it again that’s for sure.”

“It means a lot to me because that means I put together a full year where I was doing two of the toughest and most dangerous (events) there are in this sport,” saidWright, 22. “I think it’s pretty sweet that I had so much luck and kept my body this healthy.”

Wright is the first cowboy in PRCA history to win three straight all- around titles to start his career. He also is the first cowboy to collect three all-around titles in a row since Brazile accomplished the feat from 2013-2015.

BAREBACK RIDING WORLD CHAMPION

Record Breaker

BY TRACY RENCK K aycee Feild added more chapters to his legendary bareback riding career at Thomas &Mack Center. The Genola, Utah, cowboy made that a reality when he won a PRCA record sixth bareback world championship at the 2021Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge Saturday night at theThomas &Mack Center. Then, the records I’m breaking and putting my name down in history, which will last a lot longer than I’m alive. That’s much more valuable than any business or any piece of land, I could leave for my kids. “The Feild name, the Feild legacy that my dad (late ProRodeo Hall of Famer Lewis Feild) started is something I’m very proud of.” Feild, who won world championships in 2011-14 and 2020- 21, broke the all-time bareback riding world championship tie at five with ProRodeo Hall of Famers Joe Alexander and Bruce Ford. Feild clinched his latest title with his 89.5-point ride on Pickett Pro Rodeo’s New Scarlet. That placed him second in the round, which earned him $21,336. He also placed second in the average with 872.5 points on 10 head and earned $56,171 to secure his historic world title. “My mindset in the chute (in Round 10) was deep breathes, a strong mark out and ride as perfectly as you can,” Feild said. “Nothing else matters. There’s one thing you can do and that is ride to the best of your ability and that’s what I did. I tried everything I possible could to get that horse to buck as hard as he could, and I pushed my body to its full limit. I rode for 12 seconds, way past the whistle to make sure everybody knew I was in control.” Feild’s final ride was part of the game plan when he arrived in Las Vegas. He won Rounds 3, 5, and 8 outright and split Round 4. He placed in nine rounds at the NFR. “I wanted to come down here and ride here with authority and finish stronger than anybody,” Feild said. “I feel that I accomplished all of my goals and did my job.” The now six-time and reigning bareback riding world champion is the all-time PRCA record holder in bareback riding round wins at the National Finals Rodeo now with 27 after his fourth-round win at the 2021 NFR. He surpassed the mark of 25 set by Bobby Mote. “I’m overwhelmed with that record and beating Bobby Mote,” said Feild, 34. “He was my toughest competitor in my early career.” Feild becomes PRCA’s winningest bareback rider

Pope wins second straight NFR average

BY TRACY RENCK T he PRCA’s biggest stage – the Wrangler National Pope has won the NFR average. The Waverly, Kan., cowboy’s latest victory came at the 2021Wrangler NFR presented by Teton Ridge at theThomas &Mack Center in Las Vegas. Pope won the average with 873 points on 10 head. The average victory earned him $69,234. He finished second in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $340,499. Pope won four rounds – Round 1, Round 2, Round 7 and Round 10. He placed in seven rounds and earned $230,475, second most at the NFR behind only 2021 bareback riding world champion Kaycee Field’s $231,564. “This feels great,” Pope said. “This is what you dream of as a bucking horse rider. I was fortunate to draw great all week and use my horses. My traveling partners, Tim (O’Connell) and Cole (Franks), without them and my support system behind me and God I wouldn’t be where I’m at. It was a tough year, man, it was long. There were a lot of injuries between all of us and I had Finals Rodeo – has become Jess Pope’s personal playground. In his first two career appearances at the Super Bowl of rodeo,

to grind it out and they were there for me, and I was there for them and I’m forever thankful for them.” Pope had a 92-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Gun Fire to claim the Round 10 title and he needed all those points as he beat Feild by a half point. “Until you can live it and feel the electricity and feel yourself riding the bucking horse and to get off and look at the 17,000 people here watching, it is the greatest thing I have ever experienced in my life.” Pope lost the world championship by $16,920, but he wasn’t fretting being so close to first gold buckle. “God has a plan,” Pope said. “It is what it is. I showed up and performed to the best of my ability for 10 days and I’m ready to go back next year and come back bigger, better and stronger.” Pope has earned $400,892 at the last two NFRs and he’s keeping the same plan for his money. “I’m going to go home and buy more cows,” Pope said. “I have a house in Marshall, Mo., and then back at mom and dads inWaverly. Everything I do is in Kansas really and I bounce back and forth between Missouri and Kansas.”

STEER WRESTLING WORLD CHAMPION

After breaking the barrier in Round 2, Tyler Waguespack went onto to place in the next eight rounds, which included wins in Rounds 7 and 9. PRCA ProRodeo photo by Phillip Kitts

On Top of the World

Will Lummus kept the pressure on me the entire week. “When it comes down to it, it’s a marathon that you have to sprint 10 times in a row,” Waguespack said. “I’m glad I won the foot race nine out of the 10 times and came out of there as a winner.” After hitting the barrier in Round 2, Waguespack went on to place in the next eight rounds. That included splitting the win in Round 9 and winning Round 7 outright with a 3.3-second run, which was the fastest time of this year’s Wrangler NFR. “I felt like I came out of nowhere after having that broken barrier (in Round 2 with a 13.1-second run),” Waguespack said. “I just had to keep my foot on the gas and had to keep winning every single round. At no point in the 10 rounds did I safety up, it was full steam ahead all the way.” He said anytime you face off against the Top 15 guys in the world on a

nightly basis it’ll bring out the best in you. It was a field that was as tough as he can remember during his seven trips to the NFR. “The camaraderie with all the guys here is incredible,” Waguespack. “When we first started off the week it was anybody’s game to win the gold buckle. “It’s a great week of great guys making great runs. I’d love to have the same guys come right on back next year. It would be fun to do it all over again.” It’s an honor the now three-time world champion will never take for granted because he knows how easily they can slip away. “These mean so much to me,” Waguespack said. “I had one of them slip out of my fingers just two years in the same building. In Round 9, I missed one of them stopping in front of me. Nothing makes you hungrier than being that close and having the rug pulled out from under you. So, I’m happy I was able to get that accomplished this year.”

Tyler Waguespack claims third PRCA World Title

BY TANNER BARTH T yler Waguespack has made plenty of high pressure runs throughout his 12-year ProRodeo career and never blinked. He added to his already impressive resume on Dec. 11 at the 2021Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge. He climbed back on top of the PRCA championship throne with a

4.2-second run in Round 10 to secure his third world title (2016, 2018, 2021). The Gonzales, La., cowboy wrapped up his 2021 campaign earning $289,791,

edging out NFR average winner Will Lummus by $41,029. “I felt like I had to work harder for this one (world championship) than any other one throughout my career,” saidWaguespack, 31. “My good buddy
