IN HIS OWNWORDS: JAKE HANNUM PART-TIME COWBOY IN MIX FORTOUR FINALE Tie-down roper Jake Hannum has cut down on his

because I feel like they are my setup. I had good luck at both. Being that Reno (Nev.) is a circuit rodeo I went to Reno. Ponoka is just the wild card that I like. Everything went well there, I like that rodeo. It was on a Sunday, and I didn’t have to miss work. I’ve got Caldwell (Idaho) and I entered Ellensburg (Wash.). Everybody I talk to says I’m going to make the Finale at Puyallup. I don’t know. For me, it’s just a crapshoot if I happen to get lucky at one of those. If it worked out where I had my job, got to see my kids do everything and actually made the Finals, I don’t know if it could be much better. My bosses watch me a little bit and see if I’m doing good in rodeo. None of them rodeo or have followed it. My boss said, ‘We’ll cross that bridge if you happen to make it down there to the Finals.’ There’s not a lot of ag irrigation sales that go on in December, so I might be able to slip away. Summer hasn’t been too bad, but in the spring, we were going to games every direction for the kids, plus three or four practices twice a week. I think being around the family is half of why I’m winning and roping so well. Being around them, I’m enjoying when I do go and when I want to go, instead of feeling like I have to go. It also helps that I have a great horse. Greta is 10, I’ve had her for two years. If you have a chance to win, she’ll let you. If there’s a mistake it’s usually me or we didn’t draw well enough to win. I was talking today with my brother-in-law and I told him that I wished I had $5 every time someone told me to go more and try to make the National Finals. I’m old enough that I’ve tried to keep my job a priority. I know chasing the NFR is awesome, I’ve done it a long time. But realistically you need things to go the right way. I just said, if I hit at the big rodeos then everything is aligned.

I ’ve been going hard the last three years. I slowed up in the fall when I got a job. It’s been good. Every two weeks you get a check, it’s better than rodeoing. I sell agriculture irrigation. I just got lucky. I have a friend that goes to the same church. They needed an agriculture irrigation salesman. He kept trying to get me to do it, so I called about it. With connections between rodeo and different things, I’ve bumped into people who bought some agriculture irrigation fromme. It’s worked out OK. I like it. I get to drive around northern Utah. A lot of people who have ranches and farms like talking rodeo. That’s made it good, they get to talk about rodeo and I get to try and sell them irrigation systems. My company, as long as I don’t affect working, they’re OK with me rodeoing on the weekends. Everybody in my family has been excited I got a job. My wife was excited, but she didn’t think I’d last more than two weeks doing it. I’ve gotten to watch all my kids’ games and enjoy their childhood. My three kids think I’ll make the NFR, but I think I’m quite a ways from that happening. I’ve gotten lucky with how well I’ve done this year, especially in the Wrangler Tour. I’ve always enjoyed Red Bluff (Calif.) and Clovis (Calif.) rodeoing this season after getting a job with Mountainland Supply Company. That hasn’t stopped the 38-year-old, Utah cowboy from having a solid year on the rodeo trail. As of Aug. 6, Hannum was 32nd in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $33,320. Better yet, Hannum’s 450 points in the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour had him in eighth in the Tour Standings, putting him in a strong position to qualify for the Justin Finale in Puyallup, Wash., Sept. 6-9.

GRILLE COWBOY

Team roping header BRENTEN HALL, 19, has made an impressive rookie debut, competing with Wrangler NFR qualifier Chase Tryan this season and reaching the top of the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings with $38,646. After buying his card in March, the Jay, Okla., cowboy is sitting 20th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings, thanks to winning $8,042 at the K-Days Rodeo in Edmonton, Alberta, and $7,306 at the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede.

WITH AMBE BAILLIE PSN

How did you get into rodeo? Brenten: I grew up around it. My mom was a barrel racer and my dad team roped – he’s taught me everything I know about it. I started calf roping when I was about 14. Why did you choose ProRodeo as a career?

Brenten: It’s always been my goal and dream. I love roping and know the only way to be the best is to compete against the best. How did you get connected with Chase Tryan?

Brenten: Through (team roping heeler) Jake Long. He texted me one day and asked if I had a run for winter rodeos. At that time, I was still on my permit and planned on competing at high school rodeos. But instead, I bought my card. I knew I had a good partner who was committed, and my goal is to make the NFR and win Rookie of the Year in the same year. There was no sense in staying on my permit. What do you think is important when deciding who to rope with? Brenten: Someone you get along with well, not just when you’re roping. Sometimes it’s a 10-hour drive from one rodeo to the next and you don’t want to be miserable in the truck while traveling with your partner. Chase and I get along good, we have fun and always find something to talk about.

How are you feeling about the season? Brenten: It’s been good, I’ve made some good money but have made some dumb rookie mistakes. At a few rodeos I’ve gotten ahead of myself and needed to slow down. At Cheyenne (Wyo., Frontier Days) and (at the Snake River Stampede in) Nampa (Idaho), I broke the barrier. That’s where I need to use my head and just go back to the basics. You and Chase each won $8,042 at Edmonton. What was it like to win that much money at a single rodeo? Brenten: Great, especially since I got a late start in the season. I had only $2,000 going into Reno (Nev., Rodeo). Earning those bigger checks has helped me tremendously. What do you do to improve at team roping? Brenten: The roping chemistry between Chase and me is important. During our days off, we’ll head back to Chase’s place in Montana and rope steers. We’ll work on certain things, and communicating with each other is a big deal. Do you have any nicknames? Brenten: I have a lot of nicknames, but one of them is B-Hall, shortening my first name. What inspires you? Brenten: Wanting to win. Winning is everything to me – I guess you could say I have a Ricky Bobby mentality of, ‘If you’re not first, you’re last.’ The money is always good but winning first place is a bigger deal to me than anything. It’s cool to be competing with guys I’ve watched on TV and be placing at rodeos – it’s a confidence booster.

How would you describe your personality? Brenten: Laid back – I typically go with the flow. What’s something you’re particular about?

Brenten: My ropes, I don’t like other people jacking with them. I keep them in the air-conditioned trailer, so they stay cool. I think they feel better that way – heat is hard on everything. If I keep my ropes in good condition I stand a better chance. What do you do to calm your nerves before a performance? Brenten: I listen to a song I like as I’m pulling into the arena. It’ll stay in my head and I’ll start humming it – it keeps my mind at ease. What do you like to do outside of rodeo? Brenten: I like to play basketball with my buddies. I can be kind of a ball hog, so they call me ‘Melo’ for Carmelo Anthony. Header Jeff Flenniken isn’t far behind you in the rookie standings. Are you worried? Brenten: If I lose to him, I would be OK with that because he ropes good and it would be well-deserved. I’m in it to win it, but I also want ProRodeo to grow, so the more rookies the better. What do you think sets ProRodeo apart from other rodeos? Brenten: It’s a superior level. There aren’t just two or three guys who are good, it’s more like 60 or 70. I appreciate the opportunity because I love rodeo. I grew up watching rodeos like Cheyenne (Frontier Days) and now getting to compete at them is just awesome.

BY THE NUMBERS

The number of Wrangler ProRodeo Tour rodeos remaining as of Aug. 8. Three Wrangler Tour Rodeos conclude Aug. 11 – Farm-City ProRodeo (Hermiston, Ore.), Sikeston (Mo.) Bootheel Rodeo, and the Lea County Fair and Rodeo in Lovington, N.M. The Wrangler Tour consists of 22 of the PRCA’s biggest rodeos and culminates with the Justin Finale in Puyallup, Wash., Sept. 6-9. The top 24 competitors in the Tour standings in each event will earn a spot at the Finale. The combined number of people, animals and rodeo committees that have been enshrined in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colo. The breakdown is 267 people, 34 animals and 29 rodeo committees. The payout – $333,008 – for the 2018 Wrangler ProRodeo Tour’s Dodge City (Kan.) Roundup Rodeo, a rodeo record. The previous highest payout was set in 2017 at $329,794. The Dodge City Roundup Rodeo first took place in 1977.

Brody Cress’ standout season took an unexpected turn Aug. 4. The Hillsdale, Wyo., cowboy, who was second in the Aug. 6 saddle bronc riding PRCA | RAM World Standings, broke his right ankle following his 86-point ride on Burch Rodeo’s Professional Lunatic at the Home on the Range Champions Ride in Sentinel Butte, N.D. “I landed wrong on my right ankle and shattered it,” said Cress, 22. “They went in last night (Aug. 5) and put a plate and six screws in my fibula, and then they went back in (Aug. 7) and fixed the bottom of my tibia right where it connects with my ankle.” Cress, who earned $3,096 for the ride, said doctors have told him he will be out at least 10 weeks. Cress trailed saddle bronc riding standings leader Jacobs Crawley by $5,405 at the time. Cress has had a slew of big wins this season, including Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days, July 29 (story on page 43). Cress became the first saddle bronc rider in 82 years to win Cheyenne Frontier Days two years in a row. “I should be good for the Finals, but I will not be back for anything before that, I think,” Cress said. “It will probably take a little more time once they get done with everything and I go through all my checkups to really know for sure how long I will be out.” The 2018 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo takes place Dec. 6-15 in Las Vegas. A year ago, Cress made his Wrangler NFR debut and won the average with 841.5 points on 10 head. He finished second in the world standings – $2,651 behind world champion Ryder Wright. Cress also broke his right ankle competing in wrestling his freshman year of high school. “Right now, I’m just trying to go through my checkups and get Out of Action Saddle bronc rider Cress sidelined with ankle injury

back as quick as I can to make the Finals,” Cress said. “I guess if something bad was going to happen this is an OK time to have it happen because I have time to recover. It could have been a lot worse. It should get all put back together right, so I can recover and work hard and get ready for the Finals.” In related injury news, bull rider Steve Woolsey, a seven-time qualifier for the Wrangler NFR (2005-06, 2008-11 and 2013) suffered a broken tibia in his left leg after his 79-point ride July 27 in Deadwood, S.D. “When the buzzer rang, I reached down to

pull my tail and he jumped ahead and hung me up and stomped on my left leg,” he said. Woolsey is wearing a soft cast and had surgery Aug. 9. If everything goes well and he feels healthy, Woolsey will return to riding late in the season.

Where’s the Beav?” Dodge City Roundup tops USA Today contest On June 25, Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau and Dodge City Roundup Rodeo were notified that the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo was being included in a USA TODAY 10 Best Readers’ Choice contest category of Best Rodeo. USA TODAY’s expert panel selected Dodge City Roundup Rodeo as one of the 20 contenders across the United States for Best Rodeo. The contest, which was being promoted by USA TODAY , gave voters four weeks to vote for the candidate of their choice on the USA Today website. The winners were announced Aug. 3, then later in USA TODAY, the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo was selected as the “Best North American Rodeo.” Jim Shoulders monument to be unveiled An unveiling of the Jim Shoulders monument will take place at 11 a.m. (CT), Aug. 25, at Historic Nichols Park in Henryetta, Okla. Shoulders is a ProRodeo Hall of Famer and a 16-time PRCA world cham- pion (all-around, 1949, 1956-59; bull riding, 1951, 1954-59; bareback riding, 1950, 1956-58). The monument will weigh more than 12,000 pounds and stand more than 8 feet high, 10 feet long and 14 inches thick, making it the largest man-made boulder monument in Oklahoma. This event will serve as a prelude for the 25th annual Jim Shoulders Living Legends Rodeo scheduled for Sept. 1-2 in Henryetta. Statue of Clint Johnson in the making Sculptor Tony Chytka of Belle Fourche, S.D., has been making sculp- tures since 1984, and rodeo has been his main theme. Some of his most decorated sculptures are on display at the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center in Fort Pierre, S.D. Chytka created the first two, large, bronze sculptures of ProRodeo Hall of Famer and legend Casey Tibbs and Mattie Goff Newcombe, which are housed inside the museum in Fort Pierre. His bronze of five-time World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Billy Etbauer was placed outside the rodeo center in Fort Pierre, and the fourth bronze of Tibbs was unveiled June 2 at the Casey Tibbs Match of Champions in Fort Pierre. In 2019, a fifth bronze, of four-time World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Clint Johnson, will be placed outside the rodeo arena. According to Chytka, the sculpture of Johnson will be three-quarters life size. “It will be non-stop work for four months for me to get it done,” Chytka said. “I’ve known Clint since we were in high school. I went to college in Spearfish (S.D.), and that’s where Clint was born and raised.” Tibbs, Etbauer and Johnson highlight the top three saddle bronc riders in South Dakota and complete the sculpture garden dedicated to Johnny Smith. “Bronc riding tradition is pretty big in South Dakota, and Casey (Tibbs) could be the greatest ever,” Johnson said. “It will be quite an honor to be honored by that foundation and be in the garden with Casey and Billy Etbauer.” Chytka wants to have the large sculpture of Johnson done in time to take it to display in his booth – TR Chytka Bronze – at the South Point Hotel Casino during Cowboy Christmas during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

Hall of Fame’s ‘Name the Colt’ contest winner announced “Leave it to Beaver” isn’t just the name of a TV show anymore. Of the 507 entries in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame’s “Name the Colt” contest, Leave it to Beaver was the winning name. “That’s a great name, I think it’s perfect for a big stud that’s hopefully going to do great things,” said Kirsten Vold, who runs Harry Vold Rodeo Company, which owns the horse. Guests to the Hall of Fame suggested names before

PRCA staff voted to narrow those suggestions to four choices. On the first weekend of August, the 2018 class of inductees to the ProRodeo Hall of Fame voted for their favorite names. The name was submitted by John Nagel, of Colorado Springs, Colo. He was the only one to suggest Leave it to Beaver. Some suggested names were submitted by more than one person. Nagel’s prize was $200 worth of PRCA and ProRodeo Hall of Fame gift cards and merchandise. The colt was born May 15 to Beaver Tail. Painted Valley, the 2010 PRCA Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year, was the sire. Beaver Tail has been bucked as a bareback and saddle bronc horse and bucked off several cowboys at large rodeos, including Prescott, Ariz., and Cheyenne, Wyo. Beaver Tail’s first colt, 6V Pillow Talk, is a three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo participant. “It was a great way to get the visitors involved, and that’s a great name for him,” Vold said. “We usually do a combination of the lineage.
