New view leads to new Wrangler NFR experience EDITOR’S LETTER SCOTT KANIEWSKI T he 2019Wrangler National Finals Rodeo was my third trip as the editor of ProRodeo Sports News . But this go-round was a new experience. This spot in the magazine is usually reserved

in the department gets to watch the entire rodeo from the arena. Heck, we don’t even get to watch much of it on the TVs provided for us in the gym because we’re too busy. Nobody, that is, except for one person. And this year, that one person was me. I watched all 10 nights – though I did miss a couple events one round tending to another issue. Other than that, I was glued to my chair, two rows off the dirt. Before, I’d only seen the opening ceremonies and bareback riding in person. Then, I’d scurry back to the gym and spend the next four hours typing away on a keyboard. Not this time. I got to watch Ty Erickson lose his lead in the world standings only to regain it and claim his first steer wrestling world championship. I saw rookie sensation Haven Meged watch 2016 world champion Tyson Durfey go 7.9 in tie-down roping in Round 10, only to respond on the next run with an 8-flat to win the average, the rookie tie-down roping title and the world championship in his first year as a PRCA professional. He topped Durfey by two-tenths of a second for the average. And of course, I watched Sage Kimzey hold off all comers – tossing in a 94-point ride on Powder River Rodeo’s SweetPro’s Bruiser for good measure – to win his sixth consecutive bull riding championship – only the second cowboy in ProRodeo history to accomplish that feat. Being that close to the action allowed me to see the exultation, the anguish, the disbelief, the joy firsthand on every competitor’s face. A camera can only catch so much. In person, I saw it all. My recommendation, do yourself a favor and get out to Vegas for the Finals. You’ll love the experience as much as the rodeo.

for “In His Words,” devoting a section to letting cowboys or contract personnel tell their stories in their words. Before that – which was before my time with the PRCA and PSN – this was the Editor’s Letter section, an area reserved for the editor to offer some thoughts. Knowing that, I’d tossed around the idea about bringing back the Editor’s Letter, but not at the expense of losing a chance for readers to hear from ProRodeo cowboys. So what if we bounce back and forth? Sometimes it’ll be an Editor’s Letter and sometimes it’ll be an “In His Words.” Then I wondered about when the best opportunity would be for the return of the Editor’s Letter. It hit me as we returned from Las Vegas and the Finals: Now. Now was the time to do this, fresh off another trip to Las Vegas and the Finals. Why? Because this was a different Wrangler NFR for me. A behind-the-curtain reveal to those not in the know. Members of the media department aren’t in Las Vegas for 10 days of rodeo. We’re there for at least 14 days working at least 12 hours every day. We spend the first several days preparing for 10 days of the world’s biggest, richest rodeo, setting up and preparing for an influx of more than 150 media members from around North America, and sometimes beyond. When the rodeo begins, PRCAMedia Staff spend long days in an auxiliary gym in theThomas &Mack Center aiding other newspapers, websites and television networks get what they need while we also produce nightly press releases, web stories, photos and social media posts. Memories Made

2019 Wrangler NFR full of history, record-breaking performances

BY PRCA STAFF O nce again, the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo – the 61st edition – was loaded with historic moments and record-breaking performances. It was also filled with the crowning of new and old world champions. Bull rider Sage Kimzey was on top of the mountain – again. The Strong City, Okla., cowboy won his sixth consecutive world championship at the Wrangler NFR. Kimzey finished the season with a PRCA bull riding-record $480,797, breaking his 2017 record of $436,479. Kimzey also won the average with 709 points on eight head. Kimzey tied Jim Shoulders’ PRCA record for consecutive bull riding world championships at six. Shoulders won seven career bull riding titles and six in a row from 1954-59. Don Gay holds the PRCA record for most bull riding world titles with eight. “It’s hard to put into words, it is something that will take a long time for me to realize what it means,” Kimzey said.

While Kimzey is a PRCA superstar, there were a pair of young guns who turned heads in Las Vegas. Rookies StetsonWright and Haven Meged won the all-around and tie-down roping world championships, respectively. Wright came in as the leader in the all-around standings and held off all challengers to win the prestigious title with $297,923. He edged team roping header world champ Clay Smith ($279,672) for the crown. Wright became the first rookie and the youngest cowboy at age 20 to win the all-around crown. He also became the first roughstock rider to capture the honor since ProRodeo Hall of Famer Ty Murray in 1998. Wright finished third in the bull riding standings with $267,345. “It’s pretty awesome,” saidWright, who also is a saddle bronc rider. Meged, a 21-year-old, Miles City, Mont., cowboy, earned the tie- down roping gold buckle with $246,013. He also won the average with an 85.7-second time on 10 head.

Meged edged Shane Hanchey by $1,181 for the world championship and became the first cowboy fromMontana to claim a PRCA tie-down roping world title. The 2019 PRCA | Resistol Rookie of the Year in tie-down roping, Meged is the first rookie to win a tie-down roping gold buckle since Joe Beaver in 1985. Meged also became just the fourth person in ProRodeo history to win a college championship and a world championship in the same year, following in the footsteps of Ty Murray (all-around, 1988); Matt Austin (bull riding, 2005); and Taos Muncy (saddle bronc riding, 2007). “It’s a dream come true,” Meged said. In bareback riding, Clayton Biglow made his fourth trip to the Wrangler NFR one he will never forget. The Clements, Calif., cowboy won five rounds at the Wrangler NFR, including winning Round 10 with an NFR record-tying ride of 93 points on Northcott Macza’s Stevie Knicks. Biglow also won the average and earned $243,891 at the Wrangler NFR. That total was the most money earned of any contestant at the Wrangler NFR – not counting ground money – and earned him the RAM Top Gun Award. Additionally, Biglow set a bareback riding record for most money won in a regular season counting the Wrangler NFR at $425,843. The record was $374,272 by TimO’Connell in 2016. “This is crazy,” said Biglow, 23. In the chase to win the saddle bronc riding world title, Zeke Thurston returned to his throne. The Canadian cowboy who won a world

edge Cody Snow ($256,938). Smith – with heeling partner Jade Corkill, who finished fourth in the world standings – placed in six rounds, including winning Round 2 to clinch his world title. “I really want to thank Jade for heeling steers, and there were ones only he could heel this week,” Smith said. “It means a lot to me (to win another gold buckle) – it comes in order of faith for me, then my family and this is No. 3, and it’s all I think about.” While Smith was enjoying gold buckle No. 2, heeler WesleyThorp left theThomas &Mack Center as a world champion for the first time. TheThrockmorton, Texas, cowboy – roping with header Snow, who finished second in the world standings – earned $249,181 to finish atop the world standings. “It means that these are the guys I looked up to the most growing up and I put on a pedestal still as heroes,” Thorp said. “It’s like they were on a different playing field and even today they are guys I look up to, and to be one of them is amazing and a dream come true.” For the second consecutive year, barrel racer Hailey Kinsel finished the season as a world champion. Kinsel earned $290,020 to finish atop the world standings. Ivy Conrado-Saebens, who won the average, was second with $264,673. “I’ve dreamed of this, and it’s awesome,” Kinsel said. “I’m floored, and it’s very emotional.” The 10-day attendance for the Wrangler NFR was 168,289.

championship in 2016 was celebrating again in 2019. Thurston, of Big Valley, Alberta, captured the world championship record, breaking the mark of $284,938 set by Ryder Wright in 2017. “Honestly, I don’t know what to say,” Thurston said. “I wanted this second one worse than I wanted the first one.” As for steer wrestling, Ty Erickson finally took care of some unfinished business. The Helena, Mont., cowboy who came into the Wrangler NFR three of the last four years as the event leader earned $234,491 for the season to win the world championship. “Oh, man, that’s better than I expected,” Erickson said. History repeated itself for team roping header Clay Smith, and that was a good thing. Smith won his second gold buckle in a row, earning $268,820 to by earning $347,056, another season-total

Bareback rider Clayton Biglow split the win in Round 6 aboard Pickett Pro Rodeo’s Freckled Frog. The 88.5-point ride netted Biglow $20,872 and helped contribute to his world title.

PRCA PRESENT AND FUTURE CEO: Changes mark 2019 PRCA season

BY SCOTT KANIEWSKI T he 2019 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association season was one of noticeable change. Over the previous 12 months, significant changes helped shape the rodeo season. ProRodeo had big rodeos join the fold and up the ante when it came to paying contestants. Investing in technology saw the introduction of online entries for ProRodeo contestants. The PRCA also announced Jr. Rodeo, a youth movement that will be the foundation for improved rodeo at all levels. PRCA CEOGeorge Taylor discussed those and other topics at a press conference at theThomas &Mack Center in Las Vegas, Dec. 10. “We have a focus to drive the best cowboys,” Taylor said. “We want this organization to be known as the best of the best – best cowboys, best rodeos, all 700 of them, delivering a fan experience that is second to none and that positively impacts their local communities.” Big Rodeos RodeoHouston returned to the PRCA as a rodeo whose payout counted toward the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. For the first time, RFD’s The American had earnings count toward the world standings. “I’m also incredibly proud of payout growth,” Taylor said. “If we’re going to attract kids who didn’t grow up on farms to participate in our sport, that has to happen. Combined with the WPRA and our committees, we had nearly $60 million in payouts. We’re up about 7% in payouts this year and are positioned well for next year.” During 2019, the PRCA and Rural Media Group reached an agreement to air multiple rodeos – including the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo – onThe Cowboy Channel. “The net impact of this to our organization is between $45 million and $50 million over a six-year period,” he said. “We got paid a rights fee and don’t pay for production. It was a huge win for this organization, and it’s going to be a huge win for our cowboys, committees and general membership.” Sponsorship has also climbed. “Our sponsorship had been around flat for several years, then we were up last year (2018) around six or seven percent,” Taylor said. “This year we doubled that, up around 13 percent. We appreciate our sponsors greatly. Their partnership with us enables the operation of this sport.” Click Here Contestants can now enter rodeos online, allowing them to enter at any time and from anywhere. No more waiting until PROCOM is open to enter. That system will continue to evolve. “By the end of the year (2020), I suspect 70-80 percent of all those (entries) – like your Amazon orders – will be online,” Taylor said. The 2019 season proved that the PRCA is about unification. “Our mission is about unification in a world that is not very unified,” Taylor said. “We will only be as strong as we are united, and we will only be as weak as we are divided.” All in on Jr. Rodeo That unification includes Jr. Rodeo, which will holdThe Cowboy Channel Jr. National Finals Rodeo at AT&T Stadium the same week

PRCA CEO George Taylor addressed convention goers in the South Point Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Dec. 3. PRCA ProRodeo photo by Clay Guardipee

of The American. Multiple youth rodeo organizations will be involved. “Around 80 percent of our rodeos have said they would like to host a junior event,” Taylor said. “… I don’t want anybody to walk out of here thinking we aren’t going to collaborate with other junior organizations.” Among those who will have automatic qualifiers into the Jr. NFR are the National High School Rodeo Association, the Patriot and National Little Britches Rodeo Association. “We have to build the biggest and the best junior rodeo there is, and make this sport live and breathe,” Taylor said. Going beyond the arena is still key to a memorable experience. “The other thing about our vision that goes a step farther, is to partner with our committees in supporting the communities they live in,” Taylor said. “… It is one of the most unique parts of this sport that I love dearly because of what goes on there. It may be something seemingly as small as entertaining 25 or 30 kids at the NFR to San Antonio (Stock Show&Rodeo) and (Rodeo) Houston making multimillion-dollar contributions to scholarship funds. It is incredible what this sport does.” Taylor advised that 2020 will be bigger. “In my opinion, 2020 is going to be a media explosion because of the amount of content that will get on television, on digital,” he said. “The Cowboy Channel and RFD-TV will put a lot of content on television for us. Our partner Wrangler Network has plans to grow what they’re doing, and we’re going to grow what we’re doing on digital. … We’ll begin to develop a relationship with our fans like never before.”
