EDITOR’S LETTER TRACY RENCK Pennsylvania bull rider Grayson Cole eyes NFR bid

T he list of bull riders from the Northeastern part of the United States who have competed at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is a short. Most recently, Jeff Askey, who has ties to the Northeast, has qualified for the NFR four times, 2016, 2018- 20. Pennsylvania bull rider Dustin Bowen competed at the NFR in 2015 and 2017 and then, there’s Dylan Swearingen, who is a native of Piffard, N.Y., who made his NFR debut in 2019. Fellow Pennsylvania bull rider Grayson Cole of Fredonia is trying to join the group. “There are some really good riders (from the Northeast), but they just hardly ever leave because it cost so much to travel from way up there,” Cole said. “I’m originally fromCressona, Pa., and I moved to Fredonia and the family I live with owns All American Rodeo Company and they put on PRCA rodeos. I work for the All American Rodeo Company and I also own and raise bulls at their place. I own 14 bulls and once I’m done riding bulls, I want to haul bulls to rodeos and raise calves.” Cole, 22, is in his third year competing in the PRCA and he’s hopeful 2022 will culminate with him competing in Las Vegas in December. That goal received a jumpstart in January. Cole won the average at the RAM First Frontier Circuit Finals Rodeo in Harrisburg, Pa., Jan. 15. He earned $12,600 and qualified for the NFR Open powered by RAM July 13-16 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Cole kept his momentum going by placing first in the long round at the SWELS – Division 1 Xtreme Bulls event at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, Jan. 18 and earning $5,562. “That was my first (career) Division 1 Xtreme Bulls event,” Cole said. “I have been riding really good so I decided to go down to the Fort Worth Xtreme Bulls to see what I could do and see if that would give me a push to make a run at it this year.” Cole had a 90-point ride on Big Rafter Rodeo’s Farmers Only in the long round and it made the trip worthwhile. “It was crazy,” said Cole, who was unable to make the whistle in the short round. “When they announced my ride in the arena, I didn’t believe it until I looked up at the board. That was the first time I had a 90-point ride in my professional career. It felt really, really good. Since I did good in Fort Worth, I’m going to start looking to see what my (PRCA schedule) will be. “It would mean a lot for me to qualify for the NFR. It would prove to myself and show everybody in the First Frontier (Circuit) that people from up in the Northeast can go and do well out West.” Unlike most cowboys, Cole didn’t have a rodeo path to follow. “My family wasn’t into rodeo at all, but they did take us to rodeos as kids,” he said. “Ever since I was 3, it was always bull riding. The rush of riding bulls is hard to describe because

when you do good you feel like you’re 10-foot tall and bulletproof, but when you’re not doing good you feel about two inches tall. You can’t get too high or too low, you have to stay in the middle.”

Hello, Newman!

“I feel great right now to be honest with you. I think I could have taken ten more rounds (in Las Vegas). I’m healthy and I just want to keep on rolling. I’m looking forward

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH

In his first year as a PRCA cardholder steer wrestler Gus Franzen is making his name known in the sport of rodeo.

How’d you get your start in rodeo? Gus : I’m a first-generation rodeo cowboy, but I grew up wrestling and living on a ranch in Nebraska. I’ve always had a rope around the house, but in high school I started steer wrestling and it kind of took off for me. When did you know you could make a career out of the sport of rodeo? Gus: It was probably my senior year of high school when I decided it was at least something that I wanted to take to the college level. Being around guys who have been there and done that really puts it into perspective and makes it feel possible, at least for me that is. Why did you decide steer wrestling would be your event? Gus : My first steer wrestling practice I broke my leg. So, I put an end to that and didn’t think it was for me then my sophomore year of high school my dad talked me into coming back to it. I wrestled my whole life growing up, so it was something that just came naturally to me. What’s this season been like for you so far? Gus: We are just getting started I’ve been to just a few ProRodeos, but I’ve had some luck early. I’m doing a mixture of amateur, college, and ProRodeo right now, but it’s been a great year so far. Why did you decide to get your PRCA card now? Gus: I had two permits before this and the plan all along was to stay on my permit through college. Then I made our Prairie Circuit Finals last year and after talking to a few of my mentors they encouraged me to go ahead and get my card. Winning (Resistol) Rookie of the Year is definitely one of my main goals. Did you do any other rodeo events growing up? Gus: I team rope, and tie-down rope when I can. I still team rope at all the college rodeos, but it’s mainly steer wrestling at this point. Is there someone you look up to in the sport of rodeo? Gus: I don’t think there’s a single person that I look up to the most. These past couple years I’ve had the opportunity to get close with Sean Mulligan, he’s a Nebraska steer wrestler who really influences me and all my traveling partners. You can say the same for Tyler Pearson and Tom Carney. What’s one rodeo you want to win in your career? Gus: Salinas (Calif.) seems like a really cool one to win and Nebraska’s Biggest Rodeo in Burwell. That’s pretty much my hometown rodeo, so I think that would be close to the top of the list as well. What’s your go- to restaurant when you’re out on the road? Gus: It seems like we eat a lot of Subway, that might be because they are in a ton of gas stations. I get a steak, egg, and cheese sandwich almost every time. What’s your go-to movie or TV show? Gus: I love Step Brothers and I love the TV show Family Guy . Three months into the 2022 season he leads the Resistol Rookie Standings with $2,588. The 21-year-old Kearney, Neb., native has had a great start to his season. He won the average at the Cooks Rodeo Days in Lubbock, Texas, Nov. 5-6, and placed fourth at the RAM Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo in Duncan, Okla.

GUS FRANZEN

What was the make of your first car? Gus: I drove a 1986 Jeep Comanche pickup truck. It was a great vehicle until it quit on me. What’s your favorite holiday? Gus: The Fourth of July is my favorite holiday. No matter what you’re doing it’s always fun and with Cowboy Christmas you get to go to a bunch of rodeos. Whether you’re rodeoing or at the lake the Fourth of July is always a good time. What type of music do you like listening to? Gus: My dad influenced me to listen to 90s alternative heavily throughout my whole life. So, I listen to a lot of that and all country music.

ODESSA, TEXAS

Rocker Steiner gets first big rodeo win Steiner Rocks BY TRACY RENCK T his win was a long time in the making for Rocker Steiner. Steiner, who turned 18 in December, and has been training to be a PRCA bareback rider for five years, won the Sandhills Stock Show & Rodeo in Odessa, Texas, Jan. 15. “When I figured out, I wanted to ride bareback horses I was 13,” SANDHILLS STOCK SHOW & RODEO

TOP MONEY WINNER Adam Gray TOP SCORES

Steiner said. “I was a little fellow with some dreadlocks. The first guy we went to was Ty Murray. I got on his bucking machine with my piece of junk riggin at the time and his bareback riding glove. I got on the buck machine for heck a couple hours, and I left there a bareback rider.” The Weatherford, Texas, cowboy captured the Odessa victory with his 86.5-point ride on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Ghost Town. He earned $2,117 “I filled my permit the weekend of Jan. 7 in Des Moines (Iowa), and Lafayette (La.),” Steiner said. “Then in Odessa the goal was to come here and ride good and try and qualify for Houston. When the cards fell, we accomplished two goals because I was able to get the win. “I had never been on that horse before, but I have been watching that horse and I always wanted to draw her. I expected that horse to be strong and it was everything I expected. It was a fight the whole time and it was a lot of fun. To be this fresh on the scene and to get this win is a huge accomplishment.” Steiner, who bought his PRCA card Jan. 10, is following the rodeo footsteps of his grandfather Bobby Steiner, who won a PRCA bull riding world championship in 1973 and his father, Sid, the 2002 PRCA Steer Wrestling World Champion. “My main goal is to have some fun this year and make the (NFR),” Rocker said. “If (Resistol) Rookie of the Year comes with it, that’s great. The main goal is to make the Finals. Everybody keeps asking if there’s pressure on me and there’s no pressure on me. It’s just good to be here and good to be rodeoing. “I’m not big enough to be a bulldogger and my grandmother didn’t let me ride bulls and I liked bareback riding more than saddle bronc riding. I thought it fit my mentality a little bit more and that’s what we went with.” The audience of the hit TV show Yellowstone was introduced to Rocker in rodeo when he rode a horse in the practice pen. He appeared in the episode with his grandfather and father. “The movie scene is a different lifestyle than what we are living, but you know Yellowstone is kind of letting people know what the rodeo world is like and the cowboy way,” Rocker said. “It was good to be a part of that and get to meet guys like Cole Hauser and Luke Grimes. Everybody who I have meant from the show was great.” Since his faithful days at Murray’s house, Rocker, who stands 5-foot- 6 and weighs 150 pounds, has had plenty of other support from the sport’s best. “Right after I worked with Ty, I messaged Kaycee Feild and he got me in touch with a guy with a bucking machine and I started working on a bucking machine,” Rocker said. “Then, I went to Fort Worth and saw Kaycee get on and I met guys like Tilden Hooper and Mason Clements, and they helped me a bunch along the way. Without meeting those guys, I wouldn’t be where I am now.”

GREAT FALLS, MONT.

RAM MONTANA CIRCUIT FINALS

Fresh off NFR debut, Newman wins Montana Circuit Finals Trucking TOP SCORES

TOP MONEY WINNER

BY JOLEE JORDAN, Special to the ProRodeo Sports News T here is no slowing Sage Newman down. The Melstone, Mont., saddle bronc rider fulfilled a lifelong dream when he competed at his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge in December. But what is, for most, a grueling, physically demanding test of strength and stamina was just fun for the 23-year-old cowboy. Newman was competing again just one week after Vegas. Other than taking a break around the Christmas holiday – no doubt only because there were no saddle bronc ridings to enter – Newman hasn’t missed a weekend. He just loves riding bucking horses, and the joy was evident in his performance during the RAMMontana Circuit Finals Rodeo in Great Falls, Jan. 13-15. Newman rode three horses for 248 points to clinch the average win, earning $9,862. “I feel great,” Newman said of his busy schedule since ending the 2021 season 11th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. “I could have taken ten more (in Las Vegas)! “I’m healthy and I just want to keep on rolling,” he continued. “I’m looking forward to riding more bucking horses and having fun.” Newman has competed at the circuit finals in the past but never managed to secure a win. “I’ve been three or four times and every time, I’ve messed something up on one of them,” he said. “So, my goal for this time was just to be consistent. It all worked out great.” Newman started his run aboard the Sankey Pro Rodeo and Phenom Genetics horse Broken Bulb, a horse with whom he had some history. “I’d been on him before, so I knew what he was,” Newman said. “He was a nice one to have.” Newman was 82 points to kick things off, winning second in the round behind hauling partner, and fellowWrangler NFR cowboy Chase Brooks. Newman drew another Sankey bronc for night two, Intelligent Caddy. “I’d seenWade (Sundell) go for 88 or 89 on that horse,” Newman said. “The trip with me was just good and that was our eliminator pen, so I was happy to get by one.” Only five cowboys conquered their broncs in round two and Newman’s 81.5 was the best ride of the night. “Great Falls is always a blast,” Newman said. “We have good stock and a bunch of them come from the NFR so it’s a good time.” Newman was in the driver’s seat for the average title rolling into the final night of competition, not that he was aware of that. To clinch the win, Newman drew the NFR horse Pikuni Cougar of NewWest Rodeo. It was his first time to give the horse a try. “He circled around there to the right and was fun to get on.” Newman had an 84.5-point ride and picked up another second-place round check, again behind Brooks, and sealed the average. Brooks meanwhile earned the year-end title, meaning the hauling partners qualified for the NFR Open powered by RAM, July 13-16 in Colorado Springs, Colo., with the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo.

BROTHERS IN ARMS Regardless of venue, brothers- in-law Radley Day and Taylor Williams have the Montana Circuit Finals figured out — the team from Volberg claimed their third straight MCFR average win in 2022, making it two wins in Great Falls and one in Kalispell which hosted in 2021. Interestingly, the partners both ride horses raised by Williams’ family including Baybe Bullet, Williams’ heel horse who also carried his wife Joey to the 2021 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Breakaway, the Montana Circuit championship and was voted the Montana Circuit Breakaway Horse of the Year.
