IN HIS WORDS ZACK JONGBLOED

Tie-down roper and steer wrestler healed and rolling I tore my knee in Ponoka (Alberta) in the draw some good calves, my horse worked well at Cowboy Christmas and I was fortunate enough to come out of there with a little money. I was pretty surprised, because I knew

Two seasons ago, Zack Jongbloed was aiming to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo as a rookie. But a right knee injury landed the steer wrestler and tie-down roper on the sidelines and the surgeon’s table. After surgery to repair a torn ACL and a torn meniscus, Jongbloed was out six months. The 2020 Cowboy Christmas run has him back in the fold after he took home $10,778 between June 29 and July 7, moving him to 27th in the tie-down roping PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. A week prior, Jongbloed wasn’t in the top 50. The 21-year-old from Iowa, La., is also on the cusp of breaking into the all-around standings. If he can continue his hot streak, Jongbloed could be looking at his first Wrangler NFR berth.

steer wrestling, which was about 10 days before competing in Vernal (Utah). And then in tie-down roping in Vernal was where I finished it. I think I owe Vernal a little payback. I was out about six months from the surgeries.

everybody was ready to go to some rodeos because everything had been shut down for so long. I knew everybody was going to be out there and it was going to be very tough, so I was surprised I won what I did. I was happy with my performance. It (Cowboy Christmas) helped a lot. It just makes me feel like I have a chance when I back in the box. I have confidence in my horse, Stony. She’s working very well. I don’t feel like I’m bulletproof, because I know everybody else out there can rope and get it on. But winning does help your confidence. It felt good to get back in the rhythm, visit all your friends and mainly compete and do what you love. We have a few cows at the house and I worked around the farm during the pandemic. I also have a fun-jump business – Paradise Fun Jumps – that I take care of and operate, so that kept me busy. The summer months are by far the busiest. I’ve had great success with it and run it with my business partner and best friend, Jared Gaspard. Everybody’s goal is to make the National Finals and win a gold buckle, obviously. Right now, my goal is to keep plucking along, make the best out of every run and hope for the best.

It was very frustrating. My first year out there I was looking forward to it and having a good time. But at the same time everything happens for a reason. I was looking at the bright side the whole time. I knew God had a plan. I tried to make the best of it (physical therapy). It was tough, intense. I guess, like anything else, you get out of it what you put into it. I tried to take it pretty seriously. Yes, it was painful, but at the end of the day it was worth it. Therapy was tough and intense, but it wasn’t terrible. Mainly the stretches are what got me. I can handle pain pretty well, but the stretching was one of the main things that was pretty intense, and they stressed how important it was to stretch for a full recovery. Once I got released, the first couple of months it felt like I forgot how to rope or bulldog. I was all out of timing. As I continued to go to the gym and work out and condition, it gradually got better. But the road was rocky there for a while. It makes someone feel good to win a little bit. I will say I did not have a very good winter, but I was fortunate to

COWBOY GRILLE WITH AMBER BAILLIE

How are you feeling about the season? Lane: I started off the year pretty good, everything has been going as planned besides the coronavirus. But rodeos are starting to pick back up and at least I can start rodeoing again. How did you keep busy during the quarantine? Lane: Our neighbor has an arena, he bucks (broncs) every once in a while, and we did that a couple of times. I also just tried to stay in shape and had a lot more time to work. Do you rodeo full time? Lane: These past few years I’ve been mostly full time and have some side jobs that help with pay in the summer. How did you get involved in saddle bronc riding? After winning the Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days Rookie Saddle Bronc in 2018 and PRCA Permit Members of the Year Challenge in 2019, saddle bronc rider Lane Schuelke was ready for the next level in ProRodeo. As of July 7, the 22-year- old from Newell, S.D., was No. 1 in the saddle bronc riding PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings with $15,253. His brother Taygen sat 18th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings, while Lane was 25th. After winning the First Chance Bonanza in Brookings, S.D., this season, the up-and-coming cowboy is shooting to finish as rookie of the year.

LANE SCHUELKE

Lane: My dad and my brother ride broncs. That’s what pulled me in. My dad got me on the spur board when I was in middle school. I started riding saddle steers and then didn’t get on my first bronc until I was a freshman in high school. I started from there and have been getting on more and more each day. How do you prepare for a ride? Lane: When we’re traveling and get close to the rodeo, we like to get pumped up with music. When we arrive, we get stretched out and ready to go. I try not to think about it too much. What is something you want to improve on? Lane: There’s always something to improve on. You’re never going to have a perfect ride. I look at it like, if you feel like you’ve had your best ride yet, there’s always something you can critique and do a little better to make that next ride even better. What’s been your biggest challenge? Lane: My rein, that took me the longest to figure out, being able to lift on it. What made you want a career in ProRodeo? Lane: There’s no better feeling than being able to go and do something that you love and be able to make a career out of it. Who inspires you? Lane: My dad. He is happy to see my brother and me have success in the event. I want to do it for him because he got hurt and was never able to go as far as he wanted to. What do you hope to achieve by the end of the season? Lane: To win Rookie of the Year and make the Top 15. What’s the best rodeo advice you’ve received? Lane: To keep it simple, you’re just doing what you love. Your brain gets too full and you can overthink things. It’s a big mind game, that’s all it is. Mind over matter. What do you like to do outside of rodeo? Lane: I like to hang out with everybody, and I like to fish. I also like to go boating. What is your favorite TV show? Lane: Friends . What are a few things that you can’t live without? Lane: Steak and my cell phone. What’s your favorite thing to spend money on?

Lane: I like to spend money on my vehicle and traveling rig. I like to make it a little more enjoyable. It’s a 2007 Dodge RAM (truck) with a Capri (rodeo camper) on it. I bought it at the beginning of this year.

What is your favorite snack for the road? Lane: Sweet and spicy Doritos, they’re delicious. What’s the best way to start the day? Lane: Coffee.

TIME CAPSULE THE BUCKBOARD

BY MATT NABER P utting together the puzzle of rodeo’s past can be a scattered endeavor, and the further back you go, the more difficult it becomes. Old magazines, photos and news clips can be like a rodeo alumni yearbook for past competitors, and those keepsakes can turn up in the most unexpected places. Texas cowboy Dutch Taylor didn’t go far with his ProRodeo career, but his passion for the sport held strong for nearly a century. Taylor, member No. 3348, passed away Aug. 13, 2018, at 92, leaving behind a treasure trove of ProRodeo memorabilia. At an estate sale held about a year after Taylor’s passing, family friend Debbie Garrison, Miss Rodeo America 1979, found a box of ProRodeo history. But it wasn’t until Garrison was preparing to move in 2020 that she discovered the April 1951 and June 1951 editions of The Buckboard in Taylor’s box of photos, daysheets, programs and magazines. “I didn’t even know The Buckboard was the old magazine before ProRodeo Sports News ,” Garrison said. “Most people would just throw it in the trash, but I love to read about the history of rodeo and the people behind it back when it wasn’t as easy to enter and travel like we do now. I was getting ready to move but everything stopped at that moment, and I went through them page by page.” Garrison met Taylor through his wife, Jerry Ann Portwood Taylor, who was one of the original ranch girls at the Madison Square Garden rodeo. Jerry Ann and Dutch were childhood sweethearts that went separate ways as she got more into trick riding and he competed on the Texas Tech History in Print

Miss Rodeo America 1979 finds 70-year-old rodeo magazines

rodeo team. They got back together and married later in life. “He worked all events for a while, but he said he worked bareback riding and saddle bronc riding because if you roped or did any of the other events or rode bulls, that meant you wouldn’t get to the rodeo’s dance until late and all the pretty girls would be taken by then,” Garrison laughed. “I know his rodeo life was important to him and Jerry Ann, and it brought them happiness and friendships. They stayed friends with the rodeo people they knew through all of those years until they passed away, so it meant so much more to him because of the memories.” Their marriage lasted until Jerry Ann passed away in 2012 at 81. “Dutch didn’t have any children of his own, but he had a lot of nieces and nephews, and he left his estate to them,” Garrison said. Rodeo memorabilia holds a special place for Garrison because she participated in the grand opening of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame as Miss Rodeo America. “It was a real treat to see that and be part of the opening ceremony,” Garrison said. Knowing they’d be safely preserved for future generations, Garrison recently donated the magazines to the PRCA. Holding on to magazines and daysheets isn’t easy when on the rodeo road, but Taylor held onto them for 70 years, and finding them today is a bit of a treasure hunt. “I think the best thing to do is go to an estate sale out in the country where someone lives that used to rodeo because sometimes the family members aren’t knowledgeable on the history of their relatives,” Garrison said. “You never know what you’re going to find. And for the young people, if they have grandparents or parents or great-grandparents who rodeoed, they should sit down and visit and learn the history of rodeo.”

SHORT ROUND

T he 2020 Cowboy Christmas run is one saddle bronc rider Dawson Hay would love to forget. Hay, who made his debut at the 2019 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and finished seventh in the world standings, suffered a subdural hematoma and a fractured skull July 3 at the Black Hills Roundup in Belle Fourche, S.D., after getting bucked off Powder River Rodeo’s Glass Heart. A subdural hematoma is a type of bleeding in which a collection of blood – usually associated with a traumatic brain injury – gathers between the inner layer of the dura mater and the arachnoid mater of the meninges surrounding the brain. Saddle bronc rider suffers skull fracture Hay Sidelined

The Cowboy Channel video of the ride showed Hay getting bucked off early and thrown off the right side of the horse. As Hay was falling to the ground, it appeared Glass Heart’s back right hoof smacked Hay behind the right ear. “I’m not really sure what exactly happened, but I got kicked behind my right ear and it fractured my skull,” said Hay, 21. Hay was taken from the arena on a stretcher and taken to a hospital in nearby Spearfish, S.D.

“I took a flight to California, July 5 to take some time off. When I landed there, they had called me while I was on my flight and told me they had reviewed the CT scans and I had some bleeding in there, the skull was fractured and I needed to get to a hospital right away. I went to a hospital (Kaweah Delta Medical Center in Visalia, Calif.) and had to go into ICU for the rest of the day and night for observation. “They took another scan and kept me in there until they saw that the bleeding had stopped, and I was able to be released July 6.

The doctors told me to get a whole a lot of rest and not do a whole lot of physical activity for a while. They said I would not be able to compete for six to eight weeks because of my fractured skull. Hopefully I can come back in September. I will just have to play it by ear.” Hay was eighth in the July 7 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $35,331. His big payday this season came when he won the Fort Worth (Texas) Stock Show & Rodeo.

Hall of Fame 2020 induction weekend canceled

The ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy announced July 2 that the Class of 2020 Induction Ceremony scheduled for Aug. 1 in Colorado Springs, Colo., and associated activities would be canceled due to the extreme restrictions placed on events in Colorado from the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, the Hall would be unable to have the kind of numbers of attendees to truly honor the class as well as have the events be successful and worthy of the honor they are meant to be, according to a press release from the Hall.

Without the ability to have the entire families and many friends of the inductees attend, the Hall made the decision to cancel and move the events to next year. “We did not enter into this very difficult decision lightly,” said Kent Sturman, Director of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy. “None of us wanted to make this decision but it is best under the circumstances.” The ProRodeo Hall of Fame will work to plan a robust and successful event for the 2020 class to be

held in 2021.
