Johnson breaks 14-year-old rodeo record Craving BY SCOTT KANIEWSKI C het Johnson missed much of this season with a knee injury. He found a way to occupy his time, but it definitely wasn’t rodeo. The 38-year-old fromDouglas, Wyo., is healthy, and his performance in Spanish Fork, Utah, showed it. Johnson set a Spanish Fork Fiesta Days Stetson Wright $10,006, saddle bronc riding and bull riding BAREBACK RIDING 1. Kaycee Feild..............................91 pts. 2. Rodeo saddle bronc riding record with his 89.5-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Medicine Woman, besting Jeffrey Willert’s 2005 record by a half point. “That’s my favorite Utah rodeo,” Johnson said. “It’s such a neat arena, the atmosphere is great, and the crowd really gets into it. That’s one of the toughest rodeos all summer. To get that title is pretty special.” Johnson had never been on Medicine Woman. The four-time saddle bronc of the year lived up to Johnson’s expectations. “That horse is the real deal,” he said. “She’s a huge animal, and to be that athletic and be able to buck that hard with that much size is why she’s a world champion.” The win helped Johnson move to 40th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $23,148. He hasn’t rodeoed a lot this season because of the injury. “The knee feels great,” he said. “I know I don’t have a whole lot of comebacks left in me. At 38 and being a bronc rider, I wanted to be smart about this one and make sure everything was good. I’m kind of rejuvenated with all that time off, because I got hurt in ’17 too. With back-to-back years you feel like you miss a lot and it freshens you back up because you realize how much you miss it. He also found a way to pass the time while he was healing and rehabbing his knee. He did some environmental consulting for an oil company in Douglas between September 2018 and May 2019. “It was such a great opportunity and a great job and good people,” Johnson said. “But I got to missing rodeo so much, you can’t buy that. It made me crave it even more.”
