Mayfield entered the finals trailing former traveling partner Riley Webb by 1.1 seconds in the average, so he knew he had time to make up. It was all a blur after that. “Coming into the finals, I said I’m either going to be first tonight or last,” said Mayfield, the 2020 PRCA World Champion Tie-Down Roper. “I was going for it and honestly that’s what I like to do. “I’m okay with

having to play catchup. It allows me to leave it all out there and not safety up. I was able to get right on the barrier, use my rope, and it all worked out in my favor this time.” He clocked a 7.8-second run in the finals, which propelled him to the average win with 25.8 seconds on three head, edging out Webb by two-tenths of a second. The 22-year-old Mayfield and his star-studded horse Rampage put the ProRodeo world on notice years ago, but in Reno he introduced his newest ride to rodeo fans all across the country.

“I have a new horse that I used in Reno, her name is Lollipop,” he said. “She came from Andrew Burks, she took home second place in the Horse of the Year running a couple years ago. It was a bit of a slow start. We butted heads at first when I took her out to California, but so far this summer we are really clicking. To get the win on her here in Reno is really special to me.
