EDITOR’S LETTER TRACY RENCK

PRCA ProRodeo photo by Clay Guardipee Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon, left, speaks to four-time PRCA World Champion Steer Roper Scott Snedecor on April 29 at a welcome reception for the contestants at the National Circuit Finals Steer Roping in Torrington, Wyo.

Cowboys relish roping in Torrington at NCFSR

C heyenne, Wyo., hosts the Frontier Days – the “Daddy of ‘emAll” a legendary PRCA rodeo. Just 75 minutes away fromCheyenne is the city of Torrington with a population right around 6,600. Torrington, the home of EasternWyoming College, is also a great host for the National Circuit Finals Steer Roping. The 2022 version of the NCFSR took place April 30 through May 1 and by all accounts it was a true success. Why wouldn’t it be? The people of Torrington, sponsors, you name it, rolled out the red carpet for the 35 ropers at the 2022 event. The ropers get to compete indoor at the spacious Goshen Pavilion. All involved know what they are doing since this was the 13th time Torrington has hosted the NCFSR. The importance of the event was obvious for the State of Wyoming as Gov. Mark Gordon was a special guest at the NCFSR welcome reception at the Cottonwood Golf Course on April 29. The Cottonwood Golf Course also hosted a dinner for the contestants and their family members on April 30. “I grew up roping every evening with my dad and having this circuit finals here just means so much to me coming here seeing these guys,” said Gordon, who was a special guest at the NCFSR welcome reception. “I think this is such an important event for this state and for this city. We are just delighted as can be to have this event.

and we need to preserve that legacy. We will do everything we can to make sure it (the NCFSR) stays here in Torrington.” Torrington wants to host steer roping and cowboys embrace and love that fact. “This is one of the bigger events we get to go to as steer ropers,” said Cole Patterson, 26, reigning PRCA Steer Roping World Champion. “They put on a heck of a function for us here and we get to rope amazing steers.” Patterson won the NCFSR for the second year in a row and left town after earning $8,185. Veteran steer roper Jess Tierney, who finished second for the second year in a row at the NCFS, also enjoys making the trek to Torrington. “This has turned into my favorite rodeo of the year because they really treat us so good,” said Tierney, a nine-time qualifier for the NFSR. “I was telling somebody on the way up here, this really is my favorite rodeo of the year. Now, I live in Oklahoma, instead of South Dakota fulltime and it is a 700-mile drive instead of 100 miles (to get to Torrington), but it doesn’t feel that way because it is such a great rodeo to go to.” Although Tierney didn’t get the NCFSR crown, he did earn an event-best $10,605, which was only $181 from tying Patterson’s event-record haul of $10,786 in 2021. Scott Snedecor, a four-time world champ, earned $10,095 at the 2020 NCFSR.

Anytime a cowboy can earn $10,000 at a regular season PRCA rodeo it is reason for joy, especially for steer ropers. It’s no wonder steer ropers like the cozy confines of Torrington.

“One of the concerns I have is steer roping is one of those fundamental (events) in rodeo and I have always felt strongly that there is a legacy here

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH

How’d you get your start in rodeo? Tom: I’m from northwest Missouri and my family has had a ranch up there my whole life. My grandpa started it back in the 1960s. My mom, my dad, and my sister, we all rope. So, I just grew up doing it and it’s something I’ve always loved doing. When did you know you could make a career out of the sport of rodeo? Tom: There was a big (tie-down) roping in Gillette, (Wyo.) when I was a freshman in high school, and I ended up taking third. There were a bunch of NFR qualifiers and guys I really looked up to there. I won third and I thought you know maybe I can rope with these guys someday. Why did you decide tie-down roping would be your event? Tom: My dad ropes calves and my mom and sister breakaway rope. So, we have just always roped calves and I never really got into any of the other rodeo events. Who’s someone you look up to in the sport of rodeo? Tom: First and foremost, I really look up to my dad. A couple other people I look up to and like to watch are Troy and Riley Pruitt. They do things the right way. I’m traveling a little bit with Cooper Martin, and he’s been a big help as well. What’s one rodeo you want to win before your career is over? Tom: One rodeo I’d really like to win is Kansas City, Mo., where they hold the American Royal Rodeo. It’s about an hour from where I’m from, so it’s kind of my hometown rodeo. That’s one I’d love to win someday. What have you learned during your rookie season? Tom: I think I’ve learned that you can’t get caught up in watching other people and what they do. You just have to go out there and make your own run. If it works, it works and not try to rope like anyone else. It needs to be the same runs you make at the house that you make at the rodeo. Why did you decide to buy your PRCA card at this point in your career? Tom Crouse, 20, is making his name known in the sport of ProRodeo. The Gallatin, Mo., tie-down roper, is coming off a first-place finish at the Cowboy Channel Rookie Roundup presented by Resistol. He is currently sitting sixth in the running for the Rookie of the Year honor after taking home the average title earlier this season at the RAM Great Lakes Circuit Finals Rodeo.

TOM CROUSE

Tom: I wasn’t going to even buy my card this year, but I won a bunch of money at the (Great Lakes) Circuit Finals Rodeo and then had a good fall. So, I thought why not, financially I was in a great spot to give it a go. What’s your favorite restaurant? Tom: I don’t really have a favorite restaurant per se, but I love cajun food. They don’t have anything like that at home. Do you have a favorite sports team? Tom: I’m a huge fan of the Missouri Tigers. They aren’t great, but I still enjoy following them regardless. Do you have a favorite candy? Tom: I’m not a big candy guy, but if I had to pick one it would probably be Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. What was the make of your first car? Tom: The first vehicle I drove was a 2001 GMC. It was an old feed truck that we had around the house. What’s your favorite TV show or series? Tom: I like watching King of the Hill when I can, it’s a pretty hilarious show. What’s your favorite holiday? Tom: I’d have to say Christmas is probably my favorite holiday. For the Crouse family that’s when you have to be there. What type of music do you like listening to? Tom: Country music is definitely my go to. Fred Eaglesmith is a guy I like listening to. What do you enjoy doing in your downtime from rodeo? Tom: Cooper (Martin) has got me into playing basketball right now. So, when we aren’t busy, we like to play a little basketball, even though I’m not good at all.

SHORT ROUND Bust Unveiled

Bronze likeness of Hall of Famer announcer Barrett on display Photo courtesy Nebraska Land Days Left to right are Randy Corley, Michelle Corley, Brittany Ballard holding her daughter (and Hadley’s great-granddaughter) Hadley Ann; Kim Jurgens; Wyatt Barrett and Trent Barrett.

A bronze bust of North Platte, Neb., native and ProRodeo Hall of Fame announcer Hadley Barrett was unveiled on April 30 at the Wild West Arena in North Platte. The bust will greet rodeo fans as they enter the grandstands at the Wild West Arena. Barrett announced some of the biggest ProRodeos across the nation, including the National Finals Rodeo four times and as television announcer for the Finals 22 years. Barrett passed away March 2, 2017, at the age of 87, less than a week after announcing the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. Barrett started his son-in-law, Randy Corley, in the rodeo announcing business in North Platte, and the two co-announced several rodeos, including the Buffalo Bill Rodeo, which Barrett began in 1965 and Corley in 1980.

“Hadley took me under his wing,” Corley said. “He never tried to tell me how to announce a rodeo, but he told me the shortcuts. He was one of the greatest mentors a person could have. He was so good. There’s not a rodeo that he and I worked together, that I go today, that I have a real emptiness in my heart for what Hadley Barrett was.” The sculptor of Barrett’s bronze is Jake Hebbert, who was born and raised in the Sandhills of Nebraska, near Hyannis. This year›s Buffalo Bill Rodeo will be held June 15-18 at the Wild West Arena in North Platte, Neb. Performances begin at 8 p.m. (CT) nightly. Tickets are on sale at NebraskalandDays. com and range in price from $10 to $23. For more information, visit the website or call the office at 308.532.7939.

Over 85% of the overall funding has been secured for the community’s newest venue. Mittlestadt said they are short about $380,000 and are accepting donations for it. Mittlestadt’s work with the design and fundraising for the new facility is all-volunteer as his goal is to bring the community together and create an experience for everybody to share. To keep costs down, some of the existing infrastructures will be used. This includes the parking area, ticketing area, and concessions. The new arena will be available for other equine and youth events including team roping, barrel racing, and bull riding competitions. The 143rd Annual Mandan Rodeo takes place July 2-4, with performances beginning at 7:30 p.m. (CT) nightly. Tickets are only available online at MandanRodeo.com. TORRINGTON, WYO.

NATIONAL CIRCUIT FINALS STEER ROPING

Cole Patterson repeats as champion Back to Back

BY TRACY RENCK I t was a literally case of déjà vu for Cole Patterson Sunday at the National Circuit Finals Steer Roping. For the second year in a row, the Pratt, Kan., native representing the Prairie Circuit had a fabulous final day of the NCFSR to walk away as the champion at the Goshen County Pavilion. Patterson accomplished his latest feat with an electric 8.4-second run in the four-man, sudden-death finals to capture the win. Patterson’s time tied the NCFSR

record with Reo Lohse, who had an 8.4-second run in Round 6 of the 2019 NCFSR. “My thought on that last run was getting a good start on the barrier,” said Patterson, 26. “The thing about going last (in the four-man) is you know what you have to do, so you know how good you have to be at the barrier. Garrett (Hale) goes 9.8 and Jess (Tierney) goes 9.3. I had no option at that point, but to try and let my hair hang and see if I could get a good start and I knew the steer was good. That’s the one I picked to be in the final round. “I knew if I could just get a good start, I could rely on muscle memory from there and everything would be fine. It felt pretty fast.” Patterson left Torrington after earning $8,185. A year ago, in his NCFSR debut, he earned an event record $10,786. Patterson, the reigning PRCA Steer Roping World Champion, joins his father Rocky, a four-time world champion, as the only two ropers to win the NCFSR twice. Rocky won the NCFSR in 2012 and 2019. “This is a big thrill for me, I enjoy watching him (Cole) make a good run, better than I enjoy making a good run myself,” Rocky said. “He’s been putting in the work and time and it usually pays off. That horse (Tigger, that Cole rides) is outstanding in my opinion, and he doesn’t rope too bad either.” The final four, sudden round was made up of Cole Patterson, Tierney, Hale and Pake Sorey. Tierney finished second to Patterson at last year’s NCFSR. Patterson won the semis with a 10.7-second time, a tenth of a second ahead of Tierney. “I went pretty early in the eight-man round, and I didn’t know what I needed to do, and you don’t want to safety up with all these great ropers in the final eight,” said Patterson, who also split the Round 5 win with a 10.7-second run. “I thought I have to take a chance and make some things happen and they did.” The final eight semifinal round consisted of Tierney, Roger Nonella, Ryan Rochlitz, Hale, Vin Fisher Jr., Cole Patterson, Sorey, and Hank Hollenbeck. Tierney, Nonella, and Rochlitz were the only ropers of the 35 contestants to rope their first six steers. “When I went to the trailer (Saturday after the first day of the NCFSR), I thought there’s no way two years in a row they are going to let me come back and get in the final eight with what I had been doing,” Cole said. “To top off the déjà vu, I woke up (Sunday) and put my straw hat on because that’s what I did last year after the first day of this event. The cards fell my way again and I got into the final eight and things worked out from there.” Tierney won average with an 86.1-second time on six head and earned $2,903. Nonella was second in the average with a 93.6-second time and Rochlitz came in at 106.1. Nonella and Rochlitz earned $2,178 and $1,452, respectively. Other round winners were Landon McClaugherty, who split the Round 1 win with Tierney as each had 11.9-second times. McClaugherty also won Round 4 with a 9.9-second run. Slade Wood, 19, won Round 2 (10.5 seconds) and Round 3 (9.7 seconds). On May 1, Ora Taton and Cole Patterson shared the Round 5 victory at 10.7 seconds and Round 6 was won by Rocky Patterson in 10.6 seconds. Fisher Jr.’s horse, Big Blue, 8, was chosen as the Top Horse of the NCFSR. Torrington hosted the NCFSR for the 13th time.

XTREME BULLS DEL RIO, TEXAS

Portenier walks away with George Paul crown Holding On

BY TANNER BARTH B rady Portenier has one trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo under his belt and it’s a place he would like to return. He helped his cause at the 44th George Paul Memorial Xtreme Bull Riding in Del Rio, Texas, April 30. In a matter of 30 minutes, Portenier climbed on the back of two of the sports best bulls and made them count. In the long round, he rode 4L &Diamond S Rodeo’s Blood Alley for 89.5 points, punching his ticket to the 10 man championship. The Caldwell, Idaho cowboy, wasn’t done shining in the Texas lights. In the finals, he tamed 4L &Diamond S Rodeo’s Space Unicorn for 87 points. That performance secured the second Xtreme Bulls win of his career with 176.5 points on two head. It was a matchup he’s been looking forward to for over two years. “I’ve been on that bull before, but didn’t get the job done,” said Portenier, 27. “I do a pretty good job of having a short memory with these bulls, it can be both good and bad. “I knew what he was, but honestly I couldn’t remember a ton about the previous ride. So, I just went at him jump for jump and it worked out in my favor. The fall and winter rodeo run didn’t go quite as well as Portenier had hoped. He went into Del Rio outside the top 50 of the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $11,994 earned so far this season. His win at the Xtreme Bulls event put $11,630 in his pockets alone. That 16 seconds of work nearly doubled his season earnings in 2022. He said it’s a win like this that can get a cowboy pointed in the right direction with the summer run right around the corner. “I’ve definitely had better winters in the past, but like I tell everyone you never know when it’s going to be your chance to win. You are just as liable to stay on him as he is to buck you off, so you might as well go out there and try a little bit,” he said. “This win will a hundred percent give a guy confidence going down the road. Those little aches and pains don’t hurt as bad as they used to.” Portenier’s last trip to the Finals came in 2020, when he finished ninth in the world standings. He said if there’s one thing he knows, it’s that it takes consistency if you want to punch your ticket to Las Vegas when the season ends in September. “Consistency is the name of the game in bull riding,” Portenier said. “To me that’s what it takes to be good bull rider and qualify for those big events. Hopefully I can put it all together the rest of the season.”
