EDITOR’S LETTER TRACY RENCK 22 NFR first-timers this year, led by seven bull riders
Q ualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is a dream for PRCA cowboys. It’s a reward for years of hard work to get to compete for a gold buckle against the sports elite. At the 2022Wrangler NFR presented by Teton Ridge there will be a slew of newbies – 22 in all will be competing at theThomas &Mack Center in Las Vegas. Clay Long also makes his National Finals Steer Roping debut in Mulvane, Kan., Nov. 4-5. The list of Wrangler NFR newcomers is as follows: Bareback rider Rocker Steiner; steer wrestler Timmy Sparing; team roping headers Tanner Tomlinson; Lightning Aguilera; Jake Orman; team roping heelers Brye Crites and Jonathan Torres; saddle bronc riders Logan Hay; Kade Bruno; Kole Ashbacher and Tanner Butner; tie-down roper Zack Jongbloed; Riley Webb; Macon Murphy and Kincade Henry; and bull riders Tristen Hutchings; Maverick Potter; Jared Parsonage; Trey Holston; JR Stratford; Lukasey Morris and Reid Oftedahl. Nearly half the field of bull riders – 7 of the 15 – are new. Reigning and seven-time PRCAWorld Champion bull rider Sage Kimzey also didn’t qualify after suffering a season ending left shoulder injury, June 10. With so many first-time bull riders who better to give them advice than eight-time PRCAWorld Champion Bull Rider Donny Gay. No one has won more PRCAWorld Bull Riding World Championships than Gay.
“What that signals is potentially a changing of the
guard,” Gay said.
“Competing at the NFR is so difficult on you mentally it is not even funny. It is one of those things that nobody knows what is going to happen. “The one thing that will be for sure is the bull riding will be exciting because it is not going to be focused on one guy with Sage being hurt. These young guys have to step it up. Everything that they do from now on out it is not because of their physical abilities or limitations, it is mental. ‘How bad do they want it?’ and ‘Where do they want to go?’ Those are the questions. “If their goal is just to get there (to the NFR), they will be a flash in the pan, and nobody will remember them. But if they really want to go somewhere they have an opportunity.” Of the 15 bull riders who will be at the 2022Wrangler NFR, the only cowboy with a gold buckle is StetsonWright. Wright accomplished that feat in 2020, when the NFR took place at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, because of COVID-19 restrictions in Nevada. “The (NFR) is truly one bull at a time,” Gay said. “What you did getting there or what you did the last day of the season, that has nothing to do with anything. That is in the rear-view mirror. “The bulls that they picked (for the NFR), they are not the rankest bulls in the rodeo business, they are the ones they all want to get on. They have no excuses. If you are in the

Luke Potter has one goal on his mind as he kicks off the 2023 ProRodeo regular season and that’s qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The Maple City, Kan., tie-down roper took a step in the right direction on Oct. 22, by winning the RAM Columbia River Circuit Finals in Redmond, Ore. He walked out of the championship event with $8,208 and punched his ticket to the NFR Open. NFR Dreams
“The NFR Open is a good rodeo to qualify into. I look at it as a steppingstone, a way to win more money (toward the NFR). I just wanted to win as much as I could here. My goal is to make the NFR, and money won at the circuit finals helps.” NEXT ON TAP RAM TURQUOISE CIRCUIT FINALS Where: Camp Verde, Ariz. Hot Streak Trey Holston couldn’t be slowed down at the tail end of the 2022 ProRodeo regular season. COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH
Koby Jacobson, 22, has his ProRodeo rookie season pointed in the right direction after a strong month of October. The North Platte, Neb., bull rider picked up the win at the Bucking Battle in Bismarck (N.D.), Oct. 22. Jacobson captured the title with an 87-point ride on Dakota Rodeo’s Ponotoc. The ride turned into a big payday for the rookie, he pocketed $6,709 that gives him a major early season boost in the PRCA | RAM World Standings.
How’d you get your start in rodeo? Koby: I actually came from a surfer family and my dad was a surfer. I moved from Maui, Hawaii to Nebraska in 2018. But my sister started rodeoing when she was younger, and I guess I kind of grew up around it. I started riding sheep and stuff when I was little. When did you know you could make a career out of the sport of rodeo? Koby: There was never really a point where I thought I don’t know if I can do this. I’ve always had a big passion for it. I just thought why not give it a go and try it professionally. I was on my permit for two years and I ended up being pretty good at it. So, I just kept on going with it. Why did you decide bull riding would be your event? Koby: I don’t know if there’s one reason or another why I decided on bull
KOBY JACOBSON
riding. The adrenaline is great and it’s just fun. It’s hard to beat the atmosphere when you’re at a big bull riding event. There’s a lot to love about it that’s for sure. What’s this season been like for you so far? Koby: The season definitely got off to a bit of a rough start. I’ve been battling through a lot of injuries this year. The Bucking Battle was actually my first ProRodeo of the year. So, that was a good way to start it off. I’m starting to feel a little bit better, still sore, but it’s manageable. What’s one rodeo you want to win in your career? Koby: I would say winning the George Paul Memorial Xtreme Bulls (in Del Rio, Texas) is probably at the top of the list for me. I think it’s every guys dream to win that. Also, getting the win in San Antonio would be pretty awesome.
Did you do any other rodeo events growing up? Koby: I team roped, steer wrestled, and calf roped in high school. I really did it all, but bull riding was the only one I really enjoyed and felt that I could make something out of it. Is there someone you look up to in the sport of rodeo? Koby: I look up to a lot of the bull riders that are going down the road right now. I really look up to guys like Stetson Wright, Sage Kimzey, and Jeff Askey. They have all had a ton of success in this sport. What’s your go to restaurant when you’re out on the road? Koby: My go to restaurant would probably have to be a Subway. It seems like I’m almost always getting the BLT there. What is your favorite TV show? Koby: You know I don’t think I have a favorite TV show, I don’t get to watch much tv. I’m more of an outdoors person when I have free time. Do you have a favorite candy? Koby: I kind of like Nerd Ropes, I guess. They are pretty good. What was the make and model of your first car? Koby: It was a 2003 Toyota Tacoma. When you’re not rodeoing what do you enjoy doing for fun? Koby: I like golfing quite a bit. When I’m not rodeoing, sometimes I will go out to the golf course two or three times a week. What’s your favorite holiday?
Koby: Does Cowboy Christmas count as a holiday? If so, I think I’d have to choose that as my favorite holiday. Cowboy Christmas is rodeos time of the year and I love it. What type of music do you like listening to? Koby: I’m an old rock music kind of a guy. I’m a big fan of AC/DC, it doesn’t get much better than that.

WACO, TEXAS
Soileau joins Texas Circuit, wins RTCFR New Setting BY JOLEE JORDAN, Special to ProRodeo Sports News A year ago it was palm trees and lush, tropical scenery. This year it was the rolling hills of Texas. While the terrain was different, the outcome was exactly the same for steer wrestler Gavin Soileau – a championship in ProRodeo’s circuit system. In 2021, Soileau waltzed out of the RAM Southeastern Circuit Finals Rodeo in Davie, Fla., with the average championship and a berth to the NFR Open. RAM TEXAS CIRCUIT FINALS RODEO

TOP MONEY EARNER Jeff Askey ($12,169, bull riding) BAREBACK RIDING
But in 2022, Soileau jumped west, claiming the Texas Circuit and earning a position in the RAMTexas Circuit Finals Rodeo held Oct. 11 14 inWaco with the Heart O’Texas Fair & Rodeo. After four go rounds of tough action against several Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifiers and world champions, Soileau rose to the top again, winning a circuit finals rodeo average for the second straight year at 17.4 seconds. “Last year was my first time to really try to make a circuit finals,” said Soileau, 23. “I went down there to the Southeastern Circuit Finals and won like $8,000 and it gave me a big boost early in the year.” Due to rule changes, Soileau re-evaluated his circuit designation for the new season. “I was traveling with Rowdy and Remey Parrott, and Rowdy is living in Belleville (Texas), so I switched circuits to go rodeo over there in Texas,” said Soileau, who makes his home in Bunkie, La. Though he grew up in a family of team ropers, Soileau switched over to steer wrestling in eighth grade and has never looked back. “It’s just fun getting down and getting your hands on one versus just sitting on a horse when you’re roping,” he laughed. “The adrenaline rush is fun.” Long before he made the jump to ProRodeo, Soileau was gathering championship titles. He owns year-end championships in the steer wrestling and all-around in Louisiana High School Rodeo as well as a steer wrestling title from the 2018 International Finals Youth Rodeo. Once he made the move to college, rodeoing for McNeese State in Lake Charles, La., he won the 2021 National Championship at the College National Finals Rodeo. He came back in 2022 and earned the reserve national title behind fellow Texas Circuit Finalist Walt Arnold. Entering the Texas Circuit Finals ranked fifth in the standings, Soileau set the tone early with a round win on opening night after turfing his steer in 4.1 seconds. “Just like any other rodeo,” Soileau said. “Hit the barrier and go as fast as you can.” Soileau called upon his good horse, Dash, for the finals and the Parrott brothers for hazing duties. “My good horse actually got hurt right before we left for the summer run, on our last practice day,” Soileau said. “I jump rode a bunch at first and just rode him here and there. But then I started to get more confident with (Dash).” As Dash got more seasoned through the end of the year, Soileau finished 43rd in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $40,215. Soileau earned $7,229, money which counts toward the 2023 world standings. He will also make a return trip to the NFR Open, the circuit’s national championship, which is open only to the year-end and average winners from each of the circuits. In 2021, he advanced all the way to the final round at the NFR Open in Colorado Springs, Colo. last July.
