MINOT, S.D.

Cameron Morman cashes in at Minot On track BY JOE KUSEK, Special to ProRodeo Sports News RAM BADLANDS CIRCUIT FINALS RODEO

B etween working on the family ranch and chasing another Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification, Cameron Morman finds time to serve as an assistant coach for the Dickinson State rodeo program in North Dakota. “It’s fun to help the kids,” said the 29-year-old cowboy who won a College National Finals Rodeo steer wrestling title for the Blue Hawks in 2015. He put on a bulldogging tutorial at the RAMBadlands Circuit Finals, sweeping both the Finals and Year-end titles. Morman, of New Ullin, North Dakota, won the average with a time of 12.4 seconds on three runs at the State Fair Center in Minot, North Dakota, Oct. 14-16. He pocketed $7,521 to vault past Reed Kraeger, of Waco, Nebraska, in the final 2022 standings. He now qualifies for the NFR Open powered by RAM, scheduled for July in Colorado Springs, Colo. “It’s great,” he said of adding the NFR Open to his schedule. “It pays a ton and it’s a big bump in the middle of the summer.” Morman is no stranger to circuit titles. He won Finals titles in 2018 and 2019, along with year-end crowns in 2018 and 2015. “I’ve had a ton of luck in Minot,” he said. “I’ve been successful in that building.” He placed in all three rounds with solid consistency. He shared fourth place in the first round with Kraeger with a 4.4-second run, won the second round in 4.1 seconds and shared a third-round victory with Kraeger, both putting up matching times of 3.9. Morman, Kraeger and Lord were all chasing the Finals title. Lord, of Sturgis, South Dakota, won the first round in 3.8 seconds, the fastest of the event. Lord was ahead of Morman by a half-second in the average after two runs. “It came down to the last day,” he said. “Whoever placed higher in the average would win the year-end. I knew I had to place on that third steer. Reed was ahead of me on money. I had to take a pretty aggressive approach and I had to be fast.” Lord broke the barrier on his final run. Logan Lemmel, of Whitewood, South Dakota, finished second in the average at 13.6 seconds on three runs. Morman earned $18,707 for his 2022 Badlands Circuit, while Kraeger was second with $16,717 and Lord at $13,674. He rode his horse Kenneth, a 16-year-old sorrel he purchased in 2017. “I’ve kind of had him around,” he said. “I let other people ride him. We used himmore after Deadwood (S.D). “He’s just so good in the box. He doesn’t wiggle. Kenneth is so sharp off my hand, he gives me the best shot at the steer’s head. I feel my biggest strength is I’mmounted pretty well. I’ve always had good horses.” Jake Kraupie was his hazer. “I traveled with Jake in 2019 and we became pretty good friends,” said Morman. The jump-start for 2023 has him focused on a return trip to Las Vegas for the WNFR. “I wouldn’t still be bulldogging if I didn’t want to go back,” said Morman, who qualified for the WNFR in 2019, where he finished 13th in the world standings. “I had a fun circuit finals. I won $7,500, that’s a huge deal to start off the new year. It gives me some good money to keep rolling for the year.” And the steer wrestling education will continue. “Bulldogging, it never gets old,” he said. “The day it gets old is the day I have to quit.”
