Norby grabs average title in RMSCFR Memorable RAM MOUNTAIN STATES CIRCUIT FINALS

BY DAGIN RENCK, Special to ProRodeo Sports News G arrett Norby entered the RAMMountain States away a champion, making a collection of unforgettable memories. Norby collected his first RMSCF win with 164 points on two head, clinching his title with a breathtaking Round 3 victory. The weekend started slowly as he failed to make the eight second mark in the first round. The bull rider would not be discouraged. Norby posted an 85-point ride onThe Cervi Brothers’ Bad Memory in Round 2, enough to claim the round win. Then came the finale. Something he will never forget. “My third round matchup was a dreammatch. When it came, I was just so excited for that matchup,” he said. “I had been on him (Grey Denim) twice before, one didn’t go good, and the second one I won a round on him at the circuit finals (Round 1, 2019).” The pair started their bout in the chute. While getting ready for the ride, the bull shoved his nose in the slider, pinning the cowboy against him. Norby’s leg was stuck behind him while his hand gripping the rope jolted him forward. The strain on his leg resulted in a torn MCL. His traveling partner, Dillon Tyner, pulled him up from the chute to help him catch his breath. “I knew I had to dig deep, walked it off. I just went straight to business after that,” said Norby. “I cleared my mind and let it all hang loose because I still wanted that title.” Norby went to work, climbing back in for a chance at redemption. It wasn’t pretty. But on a night where none of the previous riders heard the whistle, it was enough. He posted a 79-point ride, collecting all of the $4,604 payout. The crowd jumped to its feet and roared, leaving Norby with goosebumps. “The excitement and relief just filled me up. There’s no feeling like that,” Norby said. “Just the sense of accomplishment with everyone standing on their feet, cheering and yelling while I’m just in the middle of the arena, taking it all in. I wish that moment would last forever.” In all, the bull rider earned just shy of $10,000, including the $2,763 check for winning the average title. Norby headed back home toWalsenburg, Colo., where he spends most of his time ranching, either on neighbor Tim Reed’s property or his longtime family ranch. In the winter, Norby trades cowboy for camo, guiding elk on the T/M ranch along the southern foothills. He squeezes rodeo in during the summer, mainly sticking to circuit events. Prior to the finals, Norby flirted with the idea of making the 2022 season his last. “I’m 29 years-old now and every year gets a little bit harder. With a win like this, I guess God had different plans and said, ‘This isn’t going to be your last year.’ I have to go at least next year,” he chuckled. So, what are Garrett Norby’s 2023 rodeo plans after his big win? It’s quite simple. “Go to my circuit rodeos, make circuit finals again, and top it off with the NFR Open,” Norby said. Circuit Finals in Loveland, Colo. (Oct. 21-22) with no expectations, looking to let it loose. By weekend’s end, the Colorado native walked
