PRCA AWARDS

2017 Pendleton Whisky Let ’er Buck Stock of the Year Awards Each year, the top ProRodeo cowboys in each roughstock event vote for the top bucking horses and bulls – the animal athletes with whom they contend in the arena and whose performance is worth half their own scores. Ballots go out every Sept. 1, and the winning animals are acclaimed at the PRCA’s annual awards banquet each December just before the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Stock contractors are proud of these top buckers. They invest heavily in purchases and/or breeding programs, feed and medical care for their bucking stock for years, fostering the animals’ growth and development until they are ready to be tested in the arena for the bucking instinct and physical abilities that may make them champions in their own right. In 2010, Pendleton Whisky expanded its ProRodeo involvement by sponsoring the stock awards, which are now known as the PendletonWhisky Let ‘er Buck Stock of the Year Awards. PendletonWhisky provides cash prizes for the top three animals in each event and funds the stipends for stock contractors who provide bucking stock for the Wrangler NFR. In 2017, bareback horse Virgil, saddle bronc Wound Up and bucking bull SweetPro’s Bruiser moved from second last year to the top spot. Bulls 1. SweetPro Bruiser, D&H Cattle 2. Best bareback horse 2017 Virgil C5 Rodeo

When bareback riders draw C5 Rodeo’s Virgil (right with Tanner Aus) they know they’re in for some big points so long as they stay on. Contestants climb onto the 2017 Bareback Horse of the Year in the chute and can feel something special, according toVirgil’s breeder, Dale Kling. “When he goes into the chute, every rider comments that the horse has a buzz to him, a very competitive buzz,”said Kling, C5 Rodeo livestock superintendent. C5 Rodeo owner Vern McDonald ranked winning this award at the top of his professional career. “I’ve got several businesses here in Canada, and this is probably the biggest thing I’ve accomplished,” McDonald said. “… I think it’s something that doesn’t happen every day and I’ll probably never win it again in my whole life.” The 9-year-old, 1,600-pound gelding is known for leading riders to a first-place score. That was the case for Austin Foss, who scored 88 onVirgil to win the Lynden (Wash.) PRCA Rodeo in August.

2017 Stock of the Year

Best saddle bronc 2017

Wound Up Beutler and Son Rodeo It’s been a while since Beutler and Son Rodeo could claim a Saddle Bronc of the Year Award, but Wound Up (right with Rusty Wright) put an end to that streak. The 9-year-old mare that weighs in at about 1,200 pounds was the stock contractor’s first Saddle Bronc of the Year winner since Challenger tied to win the award in 1987 with Kloud Grey Skoal. “It’s the first time that I’ve won a bronc of the year award,” said Rhett Beutler, who wasn’t quite 11 years old when the award was announced in ’87. But Rhett’s father Bennie said he remembers the award well, and they’ve won plenty of other awards

in between. The father and son duo have had bareback horses and bulls claim yearly honors since. Medicine Woman won the honor the last three years; in 2016 Wound Up was runner-up. “It’s the first time I’ve been involved with one,” said Rhett Beutler. “This is quite the honor to get this award.” At the 2016 Wrangler NFR, Wound Up bucked off Rusty Wright in the fifth round but paired with Cody Wright for a 90.5-point ride to win the 10th round. Rusty Wright got back on her at Rodeo Austin (Texas) to score 88 on her. “That horse is really, really fun,” Rusty Wright said. “She’s one you want to draw every time. She jumps out of there, bucks very hard. It’s just awesome getting on her.”

Best bucking bull 2017

SweetPro’s Bruiser D&H Cattle D&H Cattle’s SweetPro Bruiser (right with Brennon Eldred) is proof that cowboys respect a bull even when they throw them off. Bruiser, the 2017 Bucking Bull of the Year, was ridden just twice in the 2017 season. Roscoe Jarboe scored 91 on Bruiser at San Antonio in February – he tied for the third-highest score of 2017 – while Cole Melancon rode him for 90 points at the Caldwell (Idaho) Night Rodeo in August. For Melancon, it was his second successful ride atop Bruiser, the only cowboy to accomplish that in the PRCA.“Most of the time on that kind of a bull, when you nod your head, you’re probably going to be at least 90-plus points,” Melancon said. “That’s always a good one to see by your name when it comes to the short round or for the finals.” Bruiser’s 94.5 at the 2016 Wrangler NFR with Brennon Eldred aboard was the highest scored ride of 2016. The highest during the 2016 regular season also belonged to Bruiser. That was 92.5 points with Melancon aboard in Vernal, Utah, at the Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo.

Winning the Remuda Award is something that’s truly special to Jim Korkow and his family. T.J., Jim’s son, also plays a key role in the family’s stock contracting business. “This (Remuda Award) is one a guy strives for,” Jim Korkow said. “My father (Erv Korkow) started breeding bucking horses in the 1950s, so this is a product of that. There’s very few people that rodeo where it’s their only business, but for us, rodeo is our only business. Jim Korkow said most of the company’s mares have been to the National Finals Rodeo once in their career and these colts are eighth and ninth generation of bucking horse bloodlines. “The result of that kind of program are things like the Remuda Award. Cowboys realize when they come to our rodeos they are going to get on something that is going to buck and if they do their part, they can get a check.”

The rodeo that saw the biggest growth out of all PRCA rodeos from 2016 to 2017 is the latest recipient of the Remuda Award – the Horse Heaven Round-Up. Its committee purse increased from $76,000 to $160,000 and the total prize money increased by $98,288. In 2016, the Kennewick, Wash., rodeo totaled $145,048 and one year later the prize was upped to $243,336 – placing it in the Top 25 for total payouts in 2017. “Sponsorships are a big part of our program,” said Lori Lancaster, executive director of the rodeo. “We had a robust program for the size of our event to start with and it just meant going out and hustling a bit harder to increase it. People here are big fans of the rodeo and they’ve seen the changes here with the facility and everything we’ve invested, and they really wanted to get behind us.”

Steer Wrestling

Scooter, 12, is a horse who lets a competitor see what he wants to, runs hard and gives a cowboy a chance towin on anything. Pearson and Irwin bought Scooter last year fromJasonReiss, afterhearingabout him from steer wrestling world champion Tyler Waguespack. The prized quarter horse has paid hefty dividends, and continues to get better and stronger, according to Pearson. “If you race him with the haze horse, he will try and out run you, and he loves to compete. He is good to be around and has a good personality. You can just get him from the pasture and go rodeo – he doesn’t take a lot of maintenance. We’re pumped that he won this award,” Pearson said. Irwin added thatScooter isaone-of-a-kindhorse. “Hehasapersonalityand isawinner. We took a chance on him, and it’s the best investment I’ve ever made.”

Clint, 11, is a horse who can be ridden in long and short scores. Masters bought the sorrel gelding when he was 4 years old, and began rodeoing with him when he was 8. Although it took Masters a while to get Clint seasoned, eventually the athletic horse blossomed into an impressive head horse that surfaced in AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year voting. Clint’s first recognition came in 2015, when he finished third in the Horse of the Year results. “The group of horses that are in there – for mine to do good means a lot to me,” Masters said. “When I bought him, he was a tie-down roping horse. I tried to change him for probably two or three years and then finally realized he just has his own style, and that I would ride him the way he is. I’ve learned a lot from the way he moves and turns off, and that’s a good thing.” The Longs struck gold when they purchased Colonel seven years ago from Dixon Flowers Rope Horses in Oklahoma. They bought the hefty gelding when he was 6, and ever since the heel horse has won AQHA/ PRCA Horse of the Year twice (2016-17). He has helped Jake Long get to four Wrangler NFRs; Long competed on Colonel in Las Vegas for a fifth time this year. Jake Long said the best thing about Colonel is that he works in every setup. “It means a lot to me and my family – any time people recognize your animal with something like this (Horse of the Year), it makes you feel good,” he said. “I can ride Colonel anywhere, from Salinas to the (Thomas & Mack Center) at the NFR. He has never cost me money, and it’s never his fault. The cool thing about him is that he really likes to go. Whenever I have him home and try and let him rest, it upsets him. He gets a lot more personable and friendly when he gets to go to rodeos.”

Steer Roping AQHA/PRCA Horses of the Year (continued)

PRCA ProRodeo photo by Dan Hubbell

When John Bland began steer roping on Salty about three years ago, the 16-year-old gelding showed his versatility in a big way – leading Bland to his first appearance at the Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping last November. Bland has owned Salty the horse’s entire life; initially Bland’s boys used the horse to learn team roping. This year, atop Salty, Bland finished 10th in the regular-season standings with $48,184.“This is unbelievable to know that we’ve been together this long and that everybody thinks as much of him as I do,”Bland said. “It’s a great honor to have. I thought he might make a good steer roping horse because of his demeanor and his size, and now we’ve come to this point. He has a laid-back personality and doesn’t get worked up at a rodeo – he stays low key and he tries every time. I take pride in what he has helped me accomplish this year and I wouldn’t be where I’m at without him.”

Si is the kind of horse that any style of roper can win on and is good at any setup, said tie-down roper Shane Hanchey, who purchased the 11-year-old gelding over two years ago. Hanchey bought Si from tie-down roper Zeb Chapman; with Si, Hanchey finished third in the regular-season world standings and qualified for his eighth Wrangler NFR. “In October of 2015, I won the All American ProRodeo Finals on him, and that’s when I felt like the horse had potential to be good, and he has only gotten better,” Hanchey said. “It’s cool that I now have a Horse of the Year. He’s an easy-going horse that doesn’t care about anything. He went the longest out of any of my horses this year and I think his calm demeanor helps him.”

Nellie Miller’s 9-year-old blue roan mare Rafter W Minnie Reba, or “Sister,” was a model of consistency in 2017. Sister and Miller piled up $130,537 in just 47 rodeos and entered the NFR third in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world standings. Winning the AQHA/WPRA Barrel Racing Horse of the Year is an accomplishment for Miller’s entire family, as her father, former Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association team roper Sam Williams, raised and trained the horse. Sister is the daughter of Miller’s high school rodeo horse and the half-sister to Blue Duck, the steed that carried her to her first NFR in 2010 – so the award is certainly a family affair. The duo collected big wins in Reno, Nev., St. Paul, Ore., and Ellensburg, Wash., en route to the honor voted on by their peers.

PRORODEO AWARDS

Justin Boots, in recognizing the hundreds of thousands of hours of work that rodeo committee members around the country donate to putting on their local rodeos, has long made a practice of honoring 125 outstanding volunteers around the country through its John Justin Standard of the West program. PRCA rodeos vote on the recipient of Justin’s national award for a committeeperson whose dedication represents the deeds of those thousands of volunteers. In 2017, that award went rodeo director Steven Money of the Spanish Fork (Utah) Fiesta Days Rodeo. Winners of the John Justin Committeeperson of the Year Award include: 1990 Philip Diehl, Pawhuska Elks Rodeo, Pawhuska, Okla. 1991 Cletus Schenk, Red River PRCA Rodeo, Wichita Falls, Texas 1992 Duane Mahlum, Wolf Point (Mont.) Last Stand Rodeo 2017 Steven Money, Spanish Fork (Utah) Fiesta Days Rodeo John Justin Committeeperson of the Year

After serving as rodeo director of the Spanish Fork (Utah) Fiesta Days Rodeo for 34 years, Steven Money retired in 2017, grateful for the opportunity and hardworking volunteers on the committee. “I am so thankful for the committee that we’ve had,” Money said. “We’ve just had excellent people on our committee who help make it so great. It’s something that I truly loved. It’s going to be very hard to be away from it, but I’m still going to be in contact with people in the rodeo business and help rodeo committees out.” With Money’s leadership, the Spanish Fork Fiesta Days Rodeo, in 2016, became the 24th rodeo to be inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame since the inaugural class in 1979. It also was the first Utah rodeo to be inducted. “With my career coming to an end, I’m just so grateful to receive this award and get recognized for all the hours you put into it,”he said. Money, a Spanish Fork native, has been involved with the Western lifestyle his entire life. “I rodeoed when I was younger, and I just love that passion to compete and (being a rodeo director) was a way to be associated with it,”he said.

2018 PRCA MEDIA GUIDE

The PRCA award honors contract personnel (such as announcers, bullfighters, clowns, specialty acts, secretaries and timers) who have been PRCA members for at least 15 years and have committed their lives to the rodeo industry, yet received little recognition for their commitment and contributions. The nomination process was open; an external selection committee chose five finalists, and PRCA contract personnel members voted among those five. The posthumous recipient of the inaugural Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award was long-time PRCA secretary Donita Barnes, wife of ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee and PRCA stock contractor Bob Barnes, and mentor to thousands of contestants and others involved with Barnes rodeos. The PRCA renamed the award in her honor in 2012. The 2017 recipients of the Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award were Jim and Julie Sutton, who run a six-generation family operation, Sutton Rodeo, based in Onida, S.D. “We’ve been doing this since we got married – it has been a long time – but it’s been a great adventure,” Julie Sutton said. “I was completely surprised when I found out we received this honor, and it is very exciting.” Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award

Recipients of the Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award are: 2011 Donita Barnes 2012 Art and Linda Alsbaugh 2013 Fred and Norma Dorenkamp 2014 Quail Dobbs 2015 Cotton Rosser 2016 Karen Vold 2017 Jim and Julie Sutton

The history of the Suttons’ being involved in the rodeo business traces back to 1926, when Edwin Sutton, Jim’s grandfather, began producing rodeos on the home ranch in Sully County, S.D. Jim and Julie have been married for 64 years and took the company to the next level with a focus on production and innovation. Jim began the Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo in 1978, a rodeo nominated 15 times for PRCA“Indoor Rodeo of the Year,”winning the award in 2002 and 2003.“This is terrific to be recognized for an award like this at this stage of the game,”Jim Sutton said.“The best part of the whole thing is our entire family is involved in our farming and ranch operation.”Sutton Rodeo has received three PRCA Horse of the Year awards; its stock has been selected to perform at 57 of the 59 National Finals Rodeos.
