DIRECTOR’S CUT SCOTT KANIEWSKI

A year later and rodeo is back in the saddle again A bout this time last year, rodeo went silent. Like all sports organizations in North America and around the world, ProRodeo ground to a halt as the COVID-19 pandemic surged. steers, draws or stand-alone events. The rules quickly shifted to concerns with state and local laws. Sports became entangled in regulations in a way they rarely have. We put up a COVID-19 page on ProRodeo.com that listed cancellations and postponements. It quickly became the second-

On March 11, RodeoHouston announced it was shutting down. The rodeo had made it through two brackets and the second round of the third bracket. But that’s where it ended. Do you remember where you were? I was sitting in a PRCA office in Colorado Springs, Colo., watching RodeoHouston’s press conference. By then, rumors of rodeos across North American shutting down were starting to fly. When Houston shuttered its chutes, that was when it hit home, this could be very bad. And it was. For the next two-plus months, there were no ProRodeos. There weren’t any sports. There weren’t any events. Cowboys found other ways to pass the time. They found other ways to make money. Like the rest of the country they adapted to a world that in a way stopped spinning. Their world, like everyone else’s, shrunk. There were no late- night flights or last-second standby boardings. There were no 13- hour drives to make a 4-second run only to jump back in and drive another two hours to the next stop. For them, it was idle time. In the PRCA office, it was a time of mad scramble, though the “office” became the dining room table or the spare bedroom or the computer table that was covered in dust because most “computers” are now called cell phones. Rodeo rules and concerns became concerns about rodeo in general. The rules that became important had nothing to do with

most read page on the website, behind only the home page. But ProRodeo, like the rest of the world both sports and non-sports, began to navigate the hazardous canal. As spring transitioned to summer, things started to open (slightly) in places. And when summer slipped into fall the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo moved to Texas. The crowning jewel of the ProRodeo season was a shining example of how the sport could adapt like all of us. Athletes at the NFR still took home $10 million. They still bucked and rode and carried home gold buckles. Now, winter is melting into spring. and the number of rodeos that are canceling or postponing are dwindling. The ProRodeo Tour has nearly 60 rodeos on its slate, including the Tour Finale at California Rodeo Salinas. Cowboys are going to spend the hottest months of the year scorching the country in search of another Wrangler NFR berth. The vaccine to eradicate the pandemic is being administered across the globe. That means rodeos will have fans sitting shoulder to shoulder, getting autographs from cowboys and cowgirls, interacting in that way that makes rodeo different from other sports. A year removed from the world shutting down, normalcy is coming back. And so is a full slate of rodeo. Not sure about you, but we missed both.

Scott Kaniewski is the Media Director at the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He previously served more than two years as the editor of ProRodeo Sports News. He has nearly two decades of experience in sports journalism, with the last few being consumed by ProRodeo.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK

What was it like to win the average at your first circuit finals rodeo? Jarett: It was really nice. It made me feel like I belong, and I want to keep it rolling. I drew really well at the (RAM) Great Lakes Circuit Finals Rodeo and it was a great atmosphere. The first bull I drew – Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Rubicon – I knew, which made things even more exciting. I had an 88-point ride on that bull and that got me going. The Great Lakes Circuit Finals Rodeo also was only two hours from where I’m living now in New Town (Mo.), which was cool. How did you get your start in rodeo? Jarett: I didn’t have any family involved with rodeo. I started riding sheep when I was 6. I played sports throughout school, mainly football, and my older brother (Jordan Allen) rode bulls, and once he turned 18, he got me into it. Why did you choose to ride bulls? Jarett: I liked being around them. Growing up, I knew a lot of kids who were my age that rode bulls. It was nice. I’ve always wanted to be a bull rider. When I started young, I won some money, and I’ve just been going from there. What does 8 seconds feel like to you? Jarett: It feels like a lifetime. It feels like eight years. I just love the rush I get when I’m conquering that beast. I think what makes a good bull rider is you definitely have to have a lot of try and no quit. You’re going to get slammed, but you just have to go back to them. What’s your mindset as you get ready to compete in the RAM NCFR? Jarett: I’ve been trying to stay ready for it. I’ve been getting on practice bulls. I know I’m going to try and go to Disney World and Universal Studios when I’m down there. I’m going to have my brother (Jordan) down there with me, so we plan on doing some things. Also, my oldest brother, Justin (Bounds) lives in Tampa, Fla., and we are going to see him. What are your goals for the rest of the 2021 season? Jarett: I would really like to win (PRCA | Resistol) Rookie of the Year. It’s a long season and I didn’t have the best start, but I also would really like to make the NFR. What’s your favorite movie? Jarett: I don’t watch a lot of movies, but I would say my favorite one is “8 Seconds.” Every kid loves that movie. I also like to watch “Step Brothers” when we are traveling down the road. Bull rider Jarett Evans, who grew up in Springfield, Mo., kicked off the season with the biggest win of his career, capturing the average title at the RAM Great Lakes Circuit Finals Rodeo in Palmyra, Mo., Oct. 10. Evans, 23, earned $5,668 and bought his PRCA card. Evans, 5-foot-7, 135 pounds, is focusing on earning more money at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla., April 9-10.

JARETT EVANS

What do you enjoy about traveling down the PRCA trail? Jarett: You meet a lot of new friends; it’s a great atmosphere. Where’s your favorite place to eat? Jarett: I like Hooters. I get the chicken wings.

What’s your go-to dessert? Jarett: Vanilla ice cream and chocolate chip cookies. What’s your favorite cartoon? Jarett: Tom and Jerry . Everybody used to call me Jerry. What bull rider do you look up to? Jarett: I would say Terry Don

West. I just liked the way he was able to ride back in the day. What do you like doing when you’re not rodeoing? Jarett: I just like hanging around friends. I help buddies doing ranch work and fixing fences. Who is your favorite superhero? Jarett: I don’t have a reason why, but I really like Batman.

Bareback rider Tilden Hooper jumped to the top of the PRCA | RAM World Standings after winning The American. That earned him $100,000, $50,000 toward the standings. Happy Pappy

“The long-term effects of this are hopefully going to be huge. I’d like to parlay this into a gold buckle, and as far as money I would like to get something started for my 8-week-old son. “At the rate he’s using those diapers it might just go toward that.”

TIME CAPSULE SOVIETS & RODEO

Cold War Connection PRCA put on exhibition for USSR gymnasts James Fain photos American and USSR flags flew side-by-side before the exhibition rodeo in Cedar City, Utah, held for the visiting USSR Olympic gymnastics team as part of their Good Will Tour of America in 1987.

BY MATT NABER B ringing people together with some of the best athletes in America made ProRodeo the perfect candidate for kicking off the three- city GoodWill Tour of America for the USSR’s Olympic gymnastics team in 1987. “Rodeo is for sure America’s true sport, and the only sport in the world derived from an industry and it was the American cattle industry,” said J.C. Trujillo, who competed in the exhibition rodeo’s bareback riding. “Rodeo is international now, but it originated right here in our country.” The national gymnastics teams from the United States and the Soviet Union joined 4,000 fans for an exhibition rodeo on April 28,

1987, put together by the PRCA in Cedar City, Utah, as part of the city’s Western Royale Celebration – a three-day event that was the first stop on the GoodWill Tour of America. “I can remember visiting with some of those gymnasts from Russia,” Trujillo said. “They didn’t speak English, but all of themwere in really good shape and looked very dedicated. It was a cool deal. “It’s been so long ago that I can’t remember the details, but we signed autographs and they signed autographs for us, too. They were really impressed and amazed about riding bucking horses and roping off horses.” Trujillo was the 1981 Bareback Riding World Champion and a 12-time qualifier for the National Finals Rodeo (1973-83, 1985). He was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1994. “When you think about rodeo, it is a unique and different sport,” Trujillo said. “It’s important, especially for people who are leaders in the rodeo world and winners, to be able to exhibit your sport or show your sport. The time and effort it takes to become a winner in the rodeo business is pretty parallel to any other athlete – gymnast or not. The time, effort and work it takes to be a world champion or in the Top 15 in the world is very comparable to any Olympic sport.” Other contestants at the exhibition rodeo included Lewis Feild, Monty Henson, Charles Sampson, Shayne Mason, Eric Viers and Jerry Jones. PRCA administrators Shawn Davis and Gene Oliver were also in attendance. “It was a really interesting rodeo, and we got to go to their exhibition gymnastics tournament that night,” Trujillo said. “They were all very impressed with ropers and riders and what we do on horseback.” According to an article in the May 13, 1987, edition of ProRodeo Sports News , most of the visiting Soviets said the rodeo was the thing they wanted to see the most. The gymnasts went on to visit Oakland, Calif., and Seattle after Cedar City. “I’ll always remember it,” Trujillo said. “It was pretty unique since I had never seen anything like that with the sport of rodeo, and I was really honored and grateful to be a part of it.”

SHORT ROUND

Rheinheimer tabbed general manager of Wrangler NFR Meet the New Boss

A llen Rheinheimer has been named general Field in Arlington, Texas, in 2020 due to COVID-19-related issues, is annually held at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas and is scheduled for Dec. 2-11, 2021. A seasoned professional with more than 30 years of experience in equestrian production, Rheinheimer will work closely with the PRCA, Las Vegas Events and the NFRC on all aspects of rodeo production. During his career, Rheinheimer has overseen all elements of equestrian and livestock production, including many aspects of the Wrangler NFR. Since 2000, he has served as the construction maintenance manager, coordinating production elements of the NFR, including openings and anthems, rehearsals, maintenance crews, risk management procedures and production timeline development. A seasoned professional, Rheinheimer brings a diverse background to the role. Since 1988, he has served as the president and owner of Showtime Jump Company LLC, a horse show production company that services more than 25 events each year. He also serves as the production manager for the Classic Company LLC, and equestrian manager for the Hampton Classic Horse Show. Having grown up on Cedar Crest Farm in Indiana, which produced both top show horses and beef cattle, Rheinheimer is a dedicated professional fully entrenched in event production manager of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the National Finals Rodeo Committee announced March 9. The event, which was held at Globe Life Tomas Garcilazo, a four-time winner of the PRCA Specialty Act Award, is $100,000 richer. Garcilazo won the $100,000 top prize on the “Go-Big Show” on TBS. “This was an amazing experience,” said Garcilazo, who won the PRCA Specialty Act Award in 2007, 2013, 2018 and 2019 and is a mainstay at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. “It was a big challenge, and we were focused. We wanted to tell the world about how we support the Hispanic heritage and the values of family. We wanted to share what we feel and what we know with our skills, with our horses, with our passion and put it on the stage. Being on TV, besides the exposure, it was a great way to speak for our industry

in a variety of environments. He also served as the technical coordinator for the FEI World Cup Jumping Finals in 2000 and 2003 and the FEI World Cup Jumping and Dressage Finals in 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2015. He was the show manager for the 2020 FEI World Cup Finals. Allen Rheinheimer has more than 30 years of experience in equestrian production, including 20 years with the Wrangler NFR.

Tomas Garcilazo wins top prize on ‘Go-Big Show’

that I’m very proud of.” “When I came from Mexico to the United States, I have been here over 30 years, one of my goals was to do what I’m doing – drive my truck and trailer and horses and perform what I love – and it came true.” The final episode of the season of the “Go-Big Show” aired March 11. Garcilazo competed against three other finalists and one wild-card contestant in the finals. A total of 36 acts competed. Judges on the show were Snoop Dogg, actress Rosario Dawson, country singer Jennifer Nettles and professional wrestler Cody Rhodes. The host was Bert Kreischer. Filming took place in Macon, Ga.
