Tie-down roper John Douch roped two calves in 16.7 seconds to claim the win at the Canby (Ore.) Rodeo, earning $6,406.
BY JOLEE JORDAN, Special to ProRodeo Sports News T he Canby Rodeo has been good to John Douch in the early going of his career. In fact, he’s undefeated inside the Bob Traverso Arena, where the annual stop on the ProRodeo Tour presented by PendletonWhisky is held. In 2019, the Huntsville, Texas, tie-down roper won the rodeo and nearly $5,000 en route to a 16th-place finish in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the Canby Rodeo – and nearly every other rodeo in the Northwest – in 2020, but Douch was back in northwestern Oregon on Aug. 21 as though no time had passed. Douch roped two calves in 16.7 seconds to claim the win again, earning $6,406. “I don’t know what it is about Canby, but it’s been good to me,” said Douch, 24. “The setup is good, and they had good calves this year.” Douch took second in the first round with an 8.0-second run, then paired that with an 8.7 to split fourth in the second round. “I’ve got two of those Canby knives (given to the winners),” Douch said. “It’s pretty cool.” The win was part of an $8,178 weekend for Douch, helping him climb to 12th in the standings
and keeping him in the hunt for his first trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo with less than a month left in the regular season. “I’m just trying to not get ahead of myself,” Douch said. As for watching the standings while in a tight race with other potential first-time Wrangler NFR ropers like Kincade Henry, Justin Smith and Kyle Lucas, Douch seems to just be enjoying the process. “The last few weeks I’ve been looking at the standings, see who’s in front of me and who’s behind me,” Douch said. “I just need to keep my spot maintained.” Douch has relied heavily upon his horsepower, an 18-year-old roan gelding called Boosie who belongs to eight-time PRCAWorld Champion Joe Beaver. “He’s been there and done that,” Douch said. “I rode him all winter, and he’s a big part of my winning.” Boosie’s owner has also provided support as Douch chases his lifelong dream of competing in Las Vegas.
“When I was in about eighth grade, I met Joe Beaver,” Douch said. “Even now, I’m out here hauling with a friend, but I still talk to Joe about every time I make a run. He asks me about the calves and the set-up and helps me remember to not get ahead of myself and just go make my runs. “He’s been great to me.” Douch will need to be on his game as the season winds through its final month. “It’s about to get pretty busy. I’ve ridden a lot of planes here lately, but luckily I’ve been winning,” he said. “I have a lot of rodeos left, I didn’t use too many in the winter in case I needed them here at the end of the season.” In addition to lucrative late-season rodeos like Ellensburg and Pendleton, Douch is in good shape to advance to the $1 million ProRodeo Tour Finale to be held on the final weekend of the year in Salinas, Calif., where Douch won in 2019. “I like that rodeo, the way it’s set up; I’m pretty comfortable with it,” he said. “And it’s adding so much this year, I want to be there.”
