Mayfield fulfills dream Jackie Jensen photo Tie-down roper Shad Mayfield won Cheyenne Frontier Days for the first time in his career with a 9.8-second time in the finals.

Shad Mayfield came close to winning Cheyenne Frontier Days a couple of times in his career but always hoped to take a victory lap at Frontier Park and etch his name alongside the legends of rodeo’s past. Mayfield fulfilled that dream and added another signature victory to his resume with a 9.8-second run to win the tie-down roping title in front of a packed house on July 28. “I was five or six years old with a rope in my hand under the bleachers over there,” Mayfield said. “So, I’ve been coming to this rodeo for a long time. I feel like a veteran over here. It’s special to get the win after coming here for all of these years.” The three-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier and 2020 PRCA World Champion cruised through the loaded field to finish on top. He won the sixth performance with a 10.8-second run to pick up $2,000 and topped the first semifinal with a 10.1-second run to nab $5,200.

“It’s one of the coolest, unique rodeos I’ve been to,” Mayfield said. “But I’ve had really good luck all week long, drew really good calves, and just took advantage of it.” Mayfield entered the rodeo atop the PRCA | RAM World Standings in tie-down roping and the all-around. Torn labrums in both hips limited Mayfield over the last few weeks, though. And other cowboys used the opportunity to close the gap. “It’s been a hard summer battling some of the injuries that I’ve had, and I told myself that after Cheyenne, I was going to go home and take a little break,” Mayfield said. “Because of what I’ve been going through, I let some guys close in on me in the standings. So, it helps to be able to get the win before I go home for a little rest.” Chet Weitz finished second in 12.5 seconds, and Dontae Pacheco came in third with a 12.9-second run.
