IN THEIR WORDS CLINT SUMMERS Brazile’s advice has heeler-turned-header on NFR path S ince I went to heading, it’s been a went back home, I went to working a lot harder. I’m not going to say I didn’t expect to have Clint Summers made his National Finals Rodeo debut in 2018 as a team roping heeler. He has a great chance to make

whole new challenge. It’s had its ups and downs, but for the most part it’s been pretty dang good. It’s been a fun adventure on figuring out how this heading goes. It’s been a pretty good year so far. I think there are a lot of opportunities for a great header. It seems like there are a lot of guys who can heel really good. There are a lot of guys who can head (too). I always headed a little bit where I’m from down in Florida (Lake City). You kind of head and heel. You don’t really do one thing down there. There are quite a few ropers, but not as many as in places like Texas. You grow up pretty much heading and heeling. I had always headed a little bit, so I felt like I could do it. Trevor Brazile said he’d help me. We’ve become pretty good friends. I heeled for Trevor in the Northwest four or five years ago. We became pretty good friends. He’d been after me telling me, ‘I’m not saying you can’t heel, but you need to head.’ He convinced me to do it. I told him, ‘As long as I have you behind me to help me and you’re going to stick with me, then I’m going to do it.’ Last year was a learning experience, it was a little tough. We left for the summer, and it was kind of a crazy year anyway. Everybody was at every rodeo. All the top guys were at every rodeo. I hate losing, but I guess the only way to get better is to lose. It kind of lit a fire. I didn’t do that great. I turned a few decent steers but not as many as I would’ve liked. When I

success this season. If I put my name down, I expect to win, and not in an arrogant way, but I put the time in and I feel like I try to ride and buy the best horses I can buy. I worked hard, I have great horses and a great partner. I felt like we were going to do well, I just didn’t know how well we Having been a heeler it gives me an advantage as a header. I headed so long I know what the toughest part of heeling at certain set-ups was. I try to make it as easy as possible now. I can kind of read it – I’m not going to say better – but I have a different outlook than a lot of guys because I did it for so long. The main horse I ride is J.V. (registered name Jubilant Version). He’s amazing. And my sponsors Wrangler, Resistol, Purina and Apex Coolers also deserve thanks. I’m getting married Nov. 6 to Brittany Adams. She’s fromNorth Carolina. We’re getting married at one of her family’s places. My parents, Darren and Pam, own four Badcock Home Furniture &more franchises. All my family roped a little bit, but nothing big time or serious, just like a hobby. I just got to doing it and had a cousin that did it well too. We took it more seriously. I played a little baseball growing up, but I chose to rodeo, and it’s my lifestyle. It’s what I do. I wouldn’t know what to do without it. were going to do.

the 2021 Wrangler NFR in Las Vegas in December as a header. At the suggestion of ProRodeo legend Trevor Brazile, Summers made the switch from heeler to header in 2020, and no surprise, it’s looking like sage advice. After finishing 46th a season ago, Summers was ninth in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings as of Aug. 17 with $57,455. Summers is trying to lock up that second trip to the NFR, while his heeler, Ross Ashford, is trying to bank trip No. 1 to the Finals. Summers isn’t about to slow down until the regular season concludes Sept. 30, though he does have a wedding to attend – his own.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH

How did you get your start in rodeo? Slade: I started rodeoing when I was super young, I think I was maybe 6 years old. My dad (Neal) has done it my entire life and I grew up watching it all the time. I knew it was something I wanted to do since I was a kid. When did you know you could make a career out of rodeo? Slade: I think I was around 12 when I realized, you know what, I’m not too bad at this roping deal. It was around then when I realized I could make a living rodeoing if I put a ton of work into it. What do you like the most about rodeo? Slade: The competition that comes along with rodeo is great, but also the family feeling that comes along with it. Everyone is there to help you whenever you need it, and it seems like they all want you to do well. So, that’s something I really like about the sport. Why did you decide steer roping would be your event? Slade: I think it started with watching my dad do it for so many years, that made steer roping a natural event for me. I started roping calves at a super-young age, and from that point on I decided to start taking it seriously. I still enjoy some of the other events as well, though. Just a few months after graduating high school, rookie steer roper Slade Wood, 18, is starting to take the sport by storm. The New Ulm, Texas, cowboy, not only leads the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings, but he’s also seventh in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. The son of four-time National Finals Steer Roping qualifier Neal Wood won the Big Timber (Mont.) Weekly Rodeo July 7.

SLADE WOOD

Why did you decide to get your PRCA card right out of high school? Slade: I decided that I wasn’t going to college rodeo, and I felt like I could have a chance to come in and compete with the pros right away. Not many 18-year-olds are out here on the circuit doing it right now, so I think I made the right decision to buy it right after I turned 18. Who is someone you look up to in rodeo? Slade: I look up to my dad, that’s for sure, he’s showed me the ropes in the sport of rodeo. I also look up to Scott Snedecor in the steer roping and guys who have a good head on their shoulders and take care of business. Trevor Brazile is definitely one of those guys for me. What’s this season been like for you? Slade: It definitely started out rough. I even asked my dad if I was dumb for buying my card and trying to go this year because until about May I couldn’t win a check anywhere. Then the summer came around and things turned for me. It’s definitely different from youth rodeo, that’s for sure. I’ve learned a ton this year. What’s your favorite TV show? Slade: I’m a pretty big fan of “Friends.” I love comedies, and that’s one show I’ve always enjoyed watching. What’s your favorite candy? Slade: A good Twix candy bar is definitely hard to beat. What’s your go-to meal before or after a rodeo? Slade: I think if we’re going to be on the road, Whataburger would be the place we would stop. There’s a ton in Texas, so it’s not too hard to find one.

What’s the first vehicle you drove? Slade: The first vehicle I drove was a 2002 Dodge RAM automatic. I definitely fell in love with that vehicle. What do you do when you’re not rodeoing? Slade: When I’m not out rodeoing a lot of my time is spent practicing, going to school and hanging out with friends when I can. What’s your favorite holiday? Slade: Christmas is probably my favorite holiday out of all of them. I just love spending time with my family and celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

What was your favorite cartoon growing up? Slade: “Tom and Jerry” is a great show to watch. What is your favorite sports team? Slade: I’m a fan of the Houston Texans.

“My little boys are junior rodeoing now, and that’s been a ton of fun for us as a family. I have an 11-year-old, a 9-year-old and a 6-year- old. So, I stay pretty busy now with the junior rodeos, ProRodeos and horse shows.”

Team roping heeler Cesar de la Cruz doesn’t rodeo as much as he used to. The nine-time NFR qualifier spends more time with his family now that his sons are rodeoing.

SHORT ROUND

F our-time PRCA World Champion Tuf Cooper is out action after suffering an injury to his left hand in Logan, Utah, Aug. 14. Cooper, who won tie-down roping world championships in 2011-12 and 2014 and the all-around world title in 2017, expects to be out for at least four weeks. “I got a coil in my left hand getting off (my horse),” said Cooper, 30, who was competing at the Cache County Fair and Rodeo. “It locked down on all four of my fingers. My index finger is the one that took most of the damage. It fractured my (left) index finger and broke the fingernail off, and I had to get I think 30 stitches to fix it. They got me stitched up and cleaned up real nice at the hospital in Logan. I’ve never had anything like this happen to me before.” Cooper, who is second in the PRCA | RAM World Standings in all-around and tie-down roping, is planning to see a hand specialist in Colorado Springs, Colo. “I’m hoping to see him on (Aug. 18), and if not Wednesday, definitely by (Aug. 20),” Cooper said. “He was thinking I would be out four weeks, but that’s just what he told me over the phone. I will have a better idea of how long I will be out when I see him in person. “After I see the specialist, I will go home and rehab my left hand. Worst-case scenario, I will be ready for the last couple weeks of the season. Hopefully, I will get to return before then, but I’m going to do what’s best for my hand.” The PRCA regular season concludes Sept. 30. Tuf Cooper sidelined with hand injury Out of Action
