EDITOR’S LETTER TRACY RENCK

PRCA regular season earnings’ records already broken Crystal Amen photo Team ropers Kaleb Driggers/Junior Nogueira, above, competed at California Rodeo Salinas in July. The duo has already set the single-season header and heeler earnings’ records before the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo this year.

A s the saying goes, records are made to be broken. Recently, records were set in the PRCA – namely single-season money totals in respective events before the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The PRCA regular season ends on Sept. 30. Topping the list is team roping. Team roping header Kaleb Driggers ($152,956) and his partner/heeler Junior Nogueira ($152,956) are now the single season earnings record holders in their respective events before the NFR. The previous records were team roping header Clay Smith, who earned a single-season – before NFR record of $150,512 in 2019 and heeler Travis Graves earned $147,653 in 2010. Driggers/Nogueira, the reigning world champions, have had an amazing season highlighted by them setting a Cowboy Christmas single-event timed-event earnings mark of $35,152 in July. A few other single-season earnings records – before the NFR – within reach are in all-around, saddle bronc riding and bull riding. StetsonWright was leading the all-around PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $298,006 as of Aug. 1. He set the record last year with $320,482 in the all-around standings before the NFR. Wright also led the Aug. 1 bull riding world standings with $233,913. He has a shot to break Sage Kimzey’s mark of $297,026 set in 2018. The reason that mark is in reach is because there are some big-time

paydays left in the bull riding season, including the Xtreme Bulls event in Ellensburg, Wash., Sept. 3, and the Pendleton Whisky Xtreme Bulls Tour Finale Sept. 12-13 in Pendleton, Ore. Mix those events in with the inaugural NFR Playoff that will pay out $1 million Sept. 8-11 in Puyallup, Wash., and it is easy to see why, if Wright gets on a hot streak, he could smash records. Saddle bronc rider Sage Newman has had a career- best year and was leading the Aug. 1 world standings with $191,747. Newman, if he gets in a zone, could eclipse the single- season mark set by Ryder Wright at $224,488 in 2019. Granted records don’t guarantee gold buckles, but any cowboy enjoys having his name etched in the history books no matter for how long or short it may be. Staying with the records theme, bareback rider Keenan Hayes has already set two records in the 2022 season. On Aug. 1, Hayes had earned $81,128 in the PRCA | RAMRodeo Permit Standings, which is the record for most money won on a PRCA permit for one year. Hayes also already has shattered the record for most money won on a permit for a career in one event not including ground money with $106,109. He also was on his permit in 2021. As of Aug. 5, there were only 56 days left in the PRCA regular season. In that timespan, rodeo victories will happen

Record Breaker

“From the second jump, it could have gone either way. I just tried to keep gassing and I won the fist fight. I really couldn’t believe it when it said 95.5. It was a pretty big roar when the score went up.

A year ago, it was Dawson Hay tying the saddle bronc riding world record in Pollockville, Alberta, now it’s his older brother Logan stealing the show. On July 30, Logan Hay broke the PRCA World Record with a 95.5-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s X-9 Xplosive Skies, which was the 2021 Pendleton Whiskey Let ‘Er Buck Bare- back Horse of the Year. Three other cow- boys had held the record with 95 points.

The record had been set for 30 years and my brother only had it for a year and I got him.”

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TANNER BARTH

Steer wrestler Ryan Nettle, 22, is just beginning his ProRodeo career, but he’s already checked a few items off his bucket list. He placed in three different rodeos during his first Cowboy Christmas run over the Fourth of July. This past fall he won the average title at the RAM Texas Circuit Finals Rodeo, which punched his ticket to the inaugural NFR Open in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Goldthwaite, Texas, cowboy currently sits third in the running for the Resistol Rookie of the Year with $18,314.

How’d you get your start in rodeo? Ryan: My stepdad got me into it originally, he steer wrestled all throughout his life. Once he introduced me to it, I took to it and never looked back. When did you know you could make a career out of the sport of rodeo? Ryan: It started out as hobby for me, but I was practicing every day and realized I was getting pretty good at it. So, I thought I might as well try to pursue this a little more. I had success in high school and that gave me the confidence to give it a try. Why did you decide steer wrestling would be your event? Ryan: My body size fit steer wrestling and I really enjoyed it from the very first steer that I jumped. It was an adrenaline rush and the event that I wanted to pursue the most and take part in. I wouldn’t have it any other way. What’s this season been like for you so far?

RYAN NETTLE

Ryan: It’s been a little up and down. I had a great Fourth of July run and I’ve just kind of been winning checks here and there. I’ve been making good runs, but just haven’t been drawing on the best side of the cattle. Hopefully that’ll turn around and I can get a good summer finished up strong. Why did you decide to get your PRCA card now? Ryan: I won the average at the Texas Circuit Finals and qualified for the NFR Open. When I did that, I realized I qualified to get into San Antonio. I figured this was the best year if I was ever going to have a chance to do really well in my rookie year. Did you do any other rodeo events growing up? Ryan: I roped calves and team roped first actually. Really, steer wrestling was the last event that I started to practice and compete in. But it was clear early on that steer wrestling would be my event. Is there someone you look up to in the sport of rodeo? Ryan: I really don’t have one in particular. I like to pick things from everyone that’s out here rodeoing and try to use their best feature in my style. I try to blend a couple of guys together to make a really good style of steer wrestling. What’s one rodeo you want to win in your career? Ryan: I think winning either Houston or San Antonio would be really cool. I’ve always lived in between both of them and always went to them as a kid. What’s your go to restaurant when you’re out on the road? Ryan: I like Texas Roadhouse and Logan’s Roadhouse quite a bit. I’m a pretty big steak guy I guess you could say. What’s your favorite movie or TV show? Ryan: I’m a big fan of anything with action and a good story line really. I recently watched the new Top Gun , and it was a pretty good one. What was the make of your first car? Ryan: I think the first vehicle that I drove was a 2012 Ford F-350. What’s your favorite holiday? Ryan: Christmas is definitely my favorite holiday. You get to see all of your family and eat good. Hopefully there’s a few presents that go along with that. What type of music do you like listening to? Ryan: I’ll listen to just about anything, but I guess my favorite pick would be some type of country music. I’m an old school country music fan mainly. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not rodeoing? Ryan: Usually my traveling partners and I will go play golf, or maybe if there’s some water nearby, we will try to go fishing when we can.

When she was 17, her father assigned her the job of registering all the eligible horses on his Montana Ranch with the American Quarter Horse Association. The job was more challenging than it might sound. “Daddy always ran at least 200 mares, so we had 10 to 15 stallions all the time,” she told John L. Moore for an article in America’s Horse magazine. O’Connell goes back-to-back for another Cheyenne buckle Repeating BY TANNER BARTH T he 2021 ProRodeo season didn’t end like TimO’Connell had envisioned. A tailbone injury and ultimately surgery forced him to miss the last two months of the regular season. He returned to action 100 days later to compete at the TOP MONEY EARNER Coleman Proctor TOP SCORES Proctor

Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, but he admits his body wasn’t in sync as he finished fifth in the world. He says it finally feels like things are getting back to normal. “It wasn’t a week after this rodeo here last year that I broke my tailbone off,” said O’Connell, a three-time PRCAWorld Champion Bareback Rider. “It might not have been the NFR that I wanted, but I got to go and compete just 100 days from getting my tailbone taken out. “It’s not an excuse for how I rode because I showed up there to win a world title and I will always come to play. But I felt like from about February on, my spine realized that there’s not a tailbone in there anymore and my body has figured itself out.” O’Connell came to play and them some at the Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days rodeo. For the second straight season at the end of nine days of competition he was once again the man holding the coveted championship buckle. “It’s still a humbling and amazing feeling even after you’ve won it before. This is the Daddy Of ‘emAll, this is the rodeo that everyone just dreams of competing at when they’re growing up,” he said. “It doesn’t get any better than this.” He accomplished that feat in the finals with an 88.5-point trip on Sankey Pro Rodeo & PhenomGenetics’ Sozo. He knew after R.C. Landingham scored in the high 80’s right before him he was going to have to let it all hang out if he wanted to walk away with the title. “I got on Sozo here last year in my first preliminary round, so I knew that I had a shot today,” O’Connell said. “She has been so good for so long. I had watched R.C. (Landingham) ride and I had watched all these great bareback riders go in front of me and I was excited. “I knew that I had to go for it. I had to put everything out there and let it all hang out on the line and I was lucky the whistle wasn’t 8.1 seconds because it was a close finish.” In total, O’Connell walked out of Cheyenne with $10,264 in his pockets, which bumped him up to first in the latest PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. He was quick to credit his family and arrival of his baby boy Stratten in April for his recent stretch of success. “I feel great right now, you know we’ve had a great summer from the Fourth of July on,” he said. “My winter was a little bit slow, but you know we brought our new baby into this world in April, and I think that has had something to do with it. “I’m in a great place in life with my family and that’s all I can ask for. Rodeoing well is just a cherry on top for me.”

CHEYENNE FRONTIER DAYS CHEYENNE, WYO.

Tryan/Corkill take team roping title Clay Tryan and Jade Corkill teamed up to win PRCA Team Roping Header and Heeler World Championships in 2013 and 2014. The duo got back together earlier this summer and the reunion is proving to be beneficial. Tryan/Corkill won the coveted Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo with a stout 7.5-second run in the finals. “We drew good pretty much the whole time (here in Cheyenne),” Corkill said. “Days like today ( July 31), it helps when you get to go at the end and know what you have to be. We had another good steer (in the finals), and we knew what kind of run we needed to make. Going at the end is a big advantage.” Being the team last out also wasn’t lost on Tryan. “(Being last out) especially at a rodeo like this where it pays a lot, if you go first or last it is a whole different roping,” Tryan said. “It was good going at the end and knowing exactly what we had to do. (For the rest of the regular season), I’m just going to take it one steer at a time and not try to get too far ahead of myself. I just want us to try and win every chance we get.” Steer roper Ora Taton continues superb run Steer roper Ora Taton never planned to rodeo fulltime in 2022, but the more he kept winning the more he stayed on the road. The latest triumphant for the 53-year-old came at the Cheyenne Frontier Days. Taton clocked a 13.6-second run in the finals to claim the victory at the prestigious rodeo. Taton won Cheyenne for the first time in 2003. With his windfall in Cheyenne, Taton moved safely into the Top 15 in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. Jackie Jensen photos Jade Corkill, left, and Clay Tryan put their stamp on the Cheyenne Frontier Days. The duo captured the team roping title with a 7.5-second run in the finals. “The air just feels different on the last day for the big money,” Tryan said. “You’re always excited to compete for that and we were in a pretty good groove, and I was excited for today. This was a big win here and we just need to keep trying hard and doing good every time.” Tryan/Corkill each earned $16,400 in Cheyenne. Tryan moved up to second in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings and Corkill was fifth.

“There have been several years I have come to Cheyenne and I’m out in two, and done,” Taton said. “I’ve done this twice and it is sweet.” Taton is a two-time qualifier for the NFSR in 2003 and 2004 and he won the average 2003, when he finished a career-best fifth in the world standings. Most recently, Taton finished 20th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings in 2020. “Later in life you tend not to sweat the small stuff and I have a wife who is very understanding and who isn’t afraid to coach a little,” Taton said. “My horse, that little bay horse I’ve got, I’ve had for two years, and he’s just got really good, really quick. He’s what has stepped me up.”

Taton earned $12,453 in Cheyenne – $11,451 for his finals run. He defeated reigning PRCA Steer Roping World Champion Cole Patterson, who stopped the clock in 14.0 seconds in the finals. “The year has been outstanding, I can’t say it enough,” Taton said. “I always say it is once in a lifetime when you get over 50 to make the (National Finals Steer Roping) and this might do it and if it doesn’t it will be dang close. The year has been phenomenal. When you win a rodeo, it is always good, but this is my favorite rodeo.”
