DIRECTOR’S CUT SCOTT KANIEWSKI

Dollars will flow during season’s final weekend T he announcement that the ProRodeo Tour Finale is moving to California Rodeo Salinas this season with at least a $500,000 payout must have cowboys overjoyed. The final weekend of the season has always been one

and had a payout of $471,100. The winner in each event took home $7,500 for finishing first in the finals. Three winners – steer wrestler Curtis Cassidy, saddle bronc rider Ryder Wright and bareback rider Richmond Champion – took home more than $17,000 each. Of the seven cowboys to cash in as winners, only one failed to earn more than $10,000. That’s a lot of dough from one rodeo. But Puyallup wasn’t on the final weekend of 2018. It came early in September. Last season, we saw how the Tour Finale in Rapid City, S.D., on the ultimate weekend of the regular season could impact the world standings. StetsonWright used the win at the Tour Finale in saddle bronc riding to jump five spots from outside the Top 15 to 13th. That booked his spot in the Wrangler NFR in a second event – he also qualified in bull riding – and ultimately helped lead him to his second consecutive all- around world championship. Tie-down roper Tyson Durfey also used the Finale as a catapult to the NFR, jumping from 20th to 12th in the world standings after the win. But the Tour Finale last year didn’t pay as much as it will this season. The payout in 2020 hovered around $300,000. With another $200,000 going to competitors in Salinas, the Tour Finale will again rank among the top 10 highest-paying rodeos of the 2021 season. And that’s a pretty good way to spend a (final) weekend.

of last chances to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo by breaking into the Top 15 in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. But rarely has the final weekend carried so much weight. California Rodeo Salinas will run Sept. 23-26. The Top 24 contestants in the ProRodeo Tour standings in each event qualify for the Finale. In 2019, the last season to not be marred by the COVID-19 pandemic, the final weekend of the season saw 14 rodeos finish between Sept. 27-29. The total payout over that weekend added up to $796,188. Now, add in a payout of $500,000 from the Tour Finale in Salinas and that final weekend could exceed $1.2 million. By September, hopefully this pandemic talk is all under wraps because of vaccines. That would mean rodeos would be back in full swing and that final weekend would play an even bigger role than it has in the past. Rodeos like the American Royal Pro Rodeo in Kansas City, Mo., the Sheriff ’s PRCA Rodeo in San Bernardino, Calif., the Omaha (Neb.) River City Rodeo and the Cowboy Capital of the World PRCA Rodeo in Stephenville, Texas, would perfectly compliment the Tour Finale. In 2018, the Tour Finale took place in Puyallup, Wash.,

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK

How did you get your start in rodeo? Gage: I grew up in Prospect Valley, Colo., near Keenesburg. (Keenesburg is 40 minutes from Greeley.) I came to Western Texas College just to go to school, and I had never rodeoed before. I crossed paths with Kodie Jang and he taught me how to bulldog. Kodie was working in Snyder and would practice at the school. I didn’t know anything, and then one thing led to another and I started entering rodeos. The first college rodeo I entered was the second steer I ever jumped. It didn’t go well. Does it seem crazy to you how far you’ve come in less than three years? Gage Hesse didn’t follow the normal rodeo path. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound steer wrestler initially thought he was going to play college football but decided against that and chose to attend Western Texas College in Snyder. A chance meeting with steer wrestler Kodie Jang changed Hesse’s career path. He started steer wrestling with Jang and walked on the Western Texas rodeo team. Fast-forward to 2021, and Hesse, 22, is in the top 25 in the PRCA | RAM World Standings.

GAGE HESSE

Gage: Yes. I really didn’t have any idea what steer wrestling was. I wanted to play college football at Western College University in Gunnison (Colo.). I played linebacker at Weld Central High School. I just decided to go to Western Texas College. I already have my welding certificate. I’m still at Western Texas College (as a junior). I’m majoring in petroleum technology. I’ll be done this year. Where did you get your big win this year? Gage: I did well at the (RAM) Mountain States Circuit Finals Rodeo (in Loveland, Colo., in October). I finished second in the average. What’s been the key to your rodeo success? Gage: The Jackson family (in Keenesburg) has allowed me to ride a good horse of theirs, and that’s been the key to everything I’ve done. The horse’s name is Ace and he’s really good. This year I’m going to try and rodeo pretty hard. I would love to qualify for the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo. That’s on my to-do list. That would be awesome if I could do that, keep going up from there and qualify for the National Finals Rodeo one day. Who is your favorite non-rodeo athlete? Gage: (Kansas City Chiefs quarterback) Patrick Mahomes. Where’s your go-to place to eat? Gage: Chicken Express. I get the No. 1 (four Express Tenders) and a sweet tea. What’s your favorite movie? Gage: I would probably say Young Guns . I’ve seen that movie a lot. What’s the last concert you attended? Gage: Shania Twain. I saw her in Greeley a few years back. She put on a good show. What make of truck do you drive? Gage: A Dodge RAM 3500. What do you binge watch on TV? Gage: We watch a lot of old rodeos of guys steer wrestling. We watch a lot of stuff like that on The Cowboy Channel. I watch myself and see what I’m doing, and then I try to pick up things from other steer wrestlers and use them to try and make myself better. What rodeo is on your bucket list to compete at? Gage: Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days. That would be great to compete there.

What’s the coolest place you’ve been in your rodeo career? Gage: I would say Deadwood S.D. That’s a really cool place. What’s your favorite holiday?

Gage: Christmas. I enjoy being around family. I have a younger brother, Gunner, who is 16.

What was your favorite cartoon as a kid? Gage: Bob the Builder . What do you do when you’re not rodeoing? Gage: I love to go hunting and fishing. I usually go hunting for coyotes, deer, ducks and geese. I fish for anything. If I’m not rodeoing, I’m probably hunting and fishing.

SHORT ROUND Glen Alan Phillips steps down as NFR general manager A Job Well Done

W rangler National Finals Rodeo General Manager Glen Alan Phillips has stepped down, effective immediately, Las Vegas Events announced Feb. 11. The Wrangler NFR is scheduled this year for Dec. 2-11 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Hired in April 2020, Phillips served as the general manager for the NFR throughout that year and during the event’s 10-day run in Arlington, Texas – a move precipitated by Las Vegas’ inability to host a fully-ticketed event. “Serving as the general manager of the Wrangler NFR was both challenging and fulfilling,” Phillips said. “However, my current role at the

challenges for everyone in the sport of rodeo – and especially for those involved in the production of the Wrangler NFR. We wish him well and extend our appreciation for his time that he served in this role.” “The National Finals Rodeo is the Super Bowl of Western sports and ProRodeo,” PRCA CEO George Taylor said. “Glen Alan, in his first year, demonstrated his professionalism and teamwork

implementing a significant venue change less than 90 days before the event. We will miss his leadership and be cheering him on as he does his work with the American Royal in Kansas City.” A new replacement will be searched for immediately. The new general manager will work closely with the PRCA, Las Vegas Events and the NFR Committee on all aspects of rodeo production. Known as the richest and most prestigious rodeo in the world, the Wrangler NFR attracts the top 15 contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding to compete for a share of the $10 million purse and the coveted PRCA Gold Buckle.

American Royal in Kansas City will require my full attention going forward. We are in the middle of a new building campaign that will enable the American Royal to be a year-round agriculture epicenter. The NFR is the Super Bowl of rodeo and will continue to set the standard in our industry.” “Glen Alan served dutifully in his role as general manager,” LVE President Pat Christenson said. “2020 presented so many

Denver complex renovation delayed

Optimism about 2021 Cheyenne In the recently released 2020 Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days report, CEO Tom Hirsig kept open the possibility of the event returning this summer after the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the event that had run for 123 consecutive summers. “We are optimistic for 2021, this will be a year it takes the whole community to get on board to make Cheyenne Frontier Days happen,” Hirsig wrote in the report. “We are looking forward to a great 125th celebration honoring the legendary Chris LeDoux.”

Denver must delay some of its plans to renovate and expand the National Western Center campus as it wades through the financial troubles brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, The Denver Post reported recently. City officials plan to use $274 million in bonds – yet to be approved by the City Council – for long-planned early-phase upgrades and expansions to the National Western Center and the Colorado Convention Center. But later phases at the National Western Center including a new 10,000-seat arena, an exposition hall and a public market in the to- be-renovated 1909 Stadium Arena are on hold, Denver Chief Financial Officer Brendan Hanlon told The Post . City officials had planned for that later work, worth an estimated $528 million, to be paid for

with a public-private partnership.

In May, the city paused the idea, and on Feb. 16, Hanlon said straightforwardly that the price tag is “just a bridge too far right now” for the general fund, because the city’s share likely would have been hundreds of millions of dollars in the coming years. Denver, however, remains committed to the entire plan for the center that has been in the works for years, according to Hanlon and Tykus Holloway, executive director of the Mayor’s Office of the National Western Center. City officials will need to decide in the coming months how best to fund the marquee work. Because funding wasn’t secure for those phases there was never a clear timeline for completion, said Jenna Espinoza, spokeswoman for Holloway’s office.

She was the daughter of Beutler & Son’s ProRodeo Hall of Fame horse Commotion. “She was in the rank pen of horses most of the time at the NFR because if you stubbed your toe, she would buck you off,” Bennie Beutler said. “If you rode her you would usually win first or second, and the bigger the rodeo the better she bucked. She was like Commotion. In her prime, we bucked her 15 to 18 times a year.” One of Wonderland’s top performances came in Round 10 of the 2009 NFR at the Thomas & Mack Center
