IN HIS WORDS SAGE KIMZEY

Kimzey shares sage advice for downtime I get it. You’re tired of rodeos being cancelled, you’re angry because we want to be rodeoing and want to be making money. But now is not the time to bash these rodeos. Rodeos are community events, we have been a part of community

Six-time PRCA World Champion Bull Rider Sage Kimzey leads the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $68,463. He’s looking to become the first ProRodeo bull rider to win seven consecutive world titles. Like all cowboys and plenty of fans, Kimzey has been disappointed that ProRodeos

events for over 100 years. If the community is struggling, how do we expect them to donate $250 to an ad in a program when they haven’t worked in over 50 days? How do we expect these people who are worried about feeding their families, losing their businesses and surviving, to put on a rodeo when their community is suffering? You can say that you’re disappointed because you expected more but maybe this is bigger than a virus and that is just one part of why they are canceling. People are also afraid for their livelihoods. The truth is, we have been out of work for a while, but they have too. This last weekend (May 22-24) a community came together to put on a rodeo and instead of celebrating that, we are bashing an event that has taken care of all of us at one point or another. Now is not the time to bash the very people that provide us with a chance to make a living rodeoing. Without rodeos, none of us have jobs and I think we need to open our eyes and see that communities and volunteers work really hard to make this happen and if they can’t make it happen, we should at least praise them for trying. This is out of their control, it’s coming from state government and probably lack of funds. Compassion goes a long way and right now, as an industry, we need to step up and be thankful for those that can still take place and

have been canceled and postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. But the 25-year-old from Strong City, Okla., also wanted to remind fans and fellow competitors that rather than complaining, they should be looking to the future and doing whatever needs to be done to help out. So Kimzey took to Facebook to share his thoughts on the COVID-19 pandemic in the following post May 27. not focus on tearing down the ones that cannot happen. I will not bash any rodeo because they are all the reason that I have a roof over my head. Like I’ve said before, when it’s time, I’ll be ready to ride. None of us want to see it happen, but we cannot forget that right now, everyone is struggling and sometimes, they don’t have another choice. We’ll get through this, because that’s what cowboys and cowgirls do. #BeKind #BecomeLegendary To see more of Sage Kimzey’s social media posts check him out on Facebook (@sagekimzeybullrider) or on Instagram (@sagekimzey).

COWBOY GRILLE WITH MATT NABER

Rookie cowboy Britt Smith turned 19 in May, and the party continues with him at the top of the PRCA | Resistol

What kind of an influence has your family had on your ProRodeo career? Britt: My dad started roping in high school, and that’s how he met my mom. My brothers Jake and Clay are the first in the family to rope in ProRodeo. They’ve been so much help. I can skip steps and they can tell me things they already know from their experience. It’s let me learn a lot of stuff faster. What’s it like having your brother Jake as your roping partner? Britt: It’s really good, but as most brothers do, we give each other a hard time and people think we’re getting into it, but we’re just messing with each other. We’ll pick at each other and have games and matches on everything. Everything we do is a competition, and we’re always trying to beat each other at something. But in the roping pen and outside the roping pen, it’s all a team effort. He built a house 100 feet away from where I live, so we rope every day. How did COVID-19 impact your approach to your rookie year? Britt: You really can’t do anything about it. We will go to as many as we can and do the best we can. It’s a weird year, but it’s the same for everyone, so it’s not like anyone has an advantage. How did you get into rodeo in the first place? Britt: I’ve always had a rope in my hand. Our toys were a roping dummy and a rope, and for as long as I can remember all we’ve ever done is rope. What’s your favorite part about rodeoing? Rookie Standings for team roping heading. The $6,510 the Oklahoman has earned this season was largely thanks to successful trips to Texas for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo ($4,200), the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo ($2,000) and the Heart O’ Texas Fair & Rodeo in Waco ($1,091) with his brother Jake as his roping partner. Britt’s oldest brother, Clay, is the reigning two-time world champion team roping header (2018-19) and a five-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (2015-19).

BRITT SMITH

Britt: My favorite is not being in the heat here at the house and riding horses you think might buck you off every day. I like being at home, but I don’t miss riding bucking horses at the house and fixing fence. There’s cooler weather at rodeos. Heck, we’re down in the southeastern corner (of Oklahoma), 20 miles from Texas and 15 miles from Arkansas, and it gets really humid here. If you weren’t a rodeo cowboy, what would you be? Britt: I like doing stuff with cows, and I have a few of my own right now. But I would try to do something with cows. I’d probably ride some young horses and train them for people. I couldn’t see myself getting a job in town. Who do you look up to? Britt: My oldest brother, Clay. What’s the best song to have playing while you’re in the box and about to compete? Britt: I try to cancel everything out and don’t hear anything when I rope. Sometimes they’ll ask what the announcer said, but I won’t hear a word of it. That goes back to our younger days when Jake, Clay and Dad would mess with us to make us nervous and choke, but I cancel all that out and don’t pay attention to anything else. Are you picky about your hat’s shape? Britt: Yeah, I am pretty picky about it. I don’t like wearing a hat that isn’t shaped well, but we get all our hats from Resistol, and they help us out a lot. Sometimes they’ll send them pre-shaped, and if they’re not, I’ll get Jake’s wife, Brandy, to shape them for me. What’s your favorite movie?

Britt: Secretariat or Hidalgo . What’s your favorite food?

Britt: I’m not health conscious at all, I will eat anything. When we’re home, mom cooks for us six nights a week, and it’s good eating. I wish we could take her with us. My favorite meal of hers is deer meat that she fries like a tenderloin. Then she’ll make squash that’s soaked in milk and flour and fried. We like everything fried. What’s your favorite app on your phone? Britt: I have hardly any apps on my phone. Most of the time, I’m on the maps to see how far away something is. If it wasn’t for that, I’d wish I had a flip phone. What’s your favorite book? Britt: “Hatchet,” by Gary Paulsen. Which celebrity do people say you look like? Britt: A lot of people say I look like Clay or Jake, but I say neither, they’re both ugly.

ProRodeo Hall of Fame launches new website Hall’s New Look SHORT ROUND

T he ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy, in Colorado Springs, Colo., launched a new website this month (prorodeohalloffame.com), making for a cleaner look and a more mobile-friendly site. Among some of the highlights on the new website are links to all social media platforms of the Hall, a blog titled “Museum Notes” that will house all press releases, announcements and staff articles, and information on community and industry affiliations and increased links to museum and rodeo industry partners. “We are excited to launch this new and improved website for the ProRodeo Hall of Fame,” said Kent Sturman, director of the Hall. “It is something we have been working on for a few months now and we took the opportunity of having some downtime during the COVID-19 closure to finish the project. I want to acknowledge and thank Sara Tadken, our Marketing and Events Coordinator, for all her time, effort and talent in getting the new site designed, developed and launched. We hope our fans, guests and those visiting the site enjoy the new content and information available. And be sure to check back often as we will be adding more information and features in the next few weeks.” Reeves continues strong season thanks to Roy While Matt Reeves’ outstanding horse, Rattle, passed away April 17, the veteran steer wrestler has kept his season going strong aboard Roy. When Reeves’ horse Do Get Famous “Rattle,” the 2019 Steer Wrestling Purina Horse of the Year presented by AQHA, passed away, it was a devastating blow to last season’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo average winner. Rattle passed away of a ruptured stomach. She was 8. Reeves, who is leading the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $83,634, fortunately still had Roy, 12, in his stable. “Roy has stepped up, and maybe they know (when a horse passes away),” said Reeves, 41. “I have won a pile of money on Roy. I won The American on him in 2018, I won rounds at Calgary (Stampede) on him, and I won first, first and first at Pecos (Texas) last year. That horse has placed at every rodeo he’s been to this year and won multiple checks, except for Jackson, Miss., and that’s because we didn’t do our part. He was already a very, very good horse, he just wasn’t her (Rattle).” Reeves acknowledged having Roy saved his season.

With the update, patrons looking to visit the Hall of Fame can purchase general admission tickets online, once the museum is re- opened following local safety guidelines set due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The site also displays additional accolades, awards and honors added to each

inductee’s profile on the site. The feature will continue to be updated and added to over the coming months. More video content will be viewable, while information on the Hall’s school and youth educational programs will be readily available. The site will also make it easier for fans to make donations and show their support.

William (Bill) Martinelli, a saddle bronc rider who qualified eight times for the National Finals Rodeo (1962-67 and 1971-72), passed away May 2. He was 85. Martinelli finished a career-best fourth in the world standings in 1963 and won the NFR average in 1965. He competed in the PRCA for 24 years. Martinelli was born in Glendale, Calif., in 1935, and grew up in Playa del Rey, Calif. He got into rodeo in seventh grade.

Martinelli went on to win several major rodeos, including Oakdale, Calif.; San Antonio; Salinas, Calif.; and at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. He also rode broncs in Europe as part of Rodeo Far West for three months, a traveling WildWest show owned by ProRodeo Hall of Famer Buster Ivory. Martinelli married Kay Peterson. They had

four daughters –Mickey, Angie, Megan and Tasha. Angie became a ProRodeo barrel racer. Martinelli retired from competing at 43 but stayed active in rodeo by driving the Winston scoreboard around to PRCA rodeos. From there, he worked the side gate at the NFR for 10 years, with his final time in Las Vegas in 2005. Martinelli is preceded in death by his parents, Marty and Lorraine Martinelli, and his brother, Marty Jr. Martinelli is survived by his wife, Kay; daughters Mickie (Luke) Martinelli Stauss; Angie Martinelli; Megan (Chris) Peterson; and Tasha (Jason) Sweet; grandchildren Rossi (Matt) Glover, Will (Thor), Hanna, Kaeli, Logan, Deagan, Vincent, James, Troy, Pete, Jake and Luke; and great- granddaughter, Leddie Mae.

Martinelli later met up with eight-time NFR bull rider JimCharles and started hauling a steer wrestling team for ProRodeo Hall of Famer Harley May – hitting New York, Boston and San Francisco’s Cow Palace. Martinelli’s rodeo career was put on hold when he was drafted into the Army from 1958-60, serving some of that time in Korea. After his discharge, Martinelli picked up where he left off, rodeoing with Charles in California.
