Strong start has heeler aiming at first Wrangler NFR IN HIS WORDS TANNER BRADEN

T his season has been great. This is my first year to get into all the winter rodeos. We (Tierney and I) didn’t set down and have a goal to make the NFR. We were just trying to have a successful year and keep our money together, but we kept winning and had to keep going. Now, we’re at the point where there’s no turning back.

and hit one of the bigger rodeos of the year. My wife (Jade) took our oldest daughter (Lexi, 7) to Universal Studios. I kept the youngest one (Rian, who turns 4 in July) with me to check horses. We went to an Orlando basketball game. We saw alligators and crocodiles. Really, whatever the little ones wanted to do we did. We also have a boy on the way, Brenten

Tanner Braden is in an unfamiliar position. The 30-year-old team roping heeler is inside the Top 15 in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with about three months left in the regular season. Last year, Braden finished 29th in the world with $50,406. Before that, the Dewey, Okla., cowboy had never earned more than $4,000 in a season because of priorities as a stock contractor. But with last year’s success and a big haul of $18,068 at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, he and team roping header Paul David Tierney have earned $43,448 apiece to move inside the top 10 in the world with a great chance of making their first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

To be able to rope against all those guys you grew up watching and idolized is a great opportunity. I’m just trying to take it all in. (In 2018), we really started by going to the better winter rodeos that we could get into, because we didn’t get into the bigger rodeos. We kind of nickel-and- dimed them on the way. Our goal was to win the circuit and make it to (the RAMNCFR in) Florida. Then we looked and in our circuit we had $20,000 won. Then we had an opportunity to make Puyallup and entered a few bigger (ProRodeo Tour) rodeos and had success there. After that, we were kind of in the boat that we are now, we had a chance at the end of the season, so we had to put our name down everywhere to see what happened. The RAMNCFR was fun. My family got to go out there and have a little vacation. We placed in the second round and in the average and that allowed us a little profit. We didn’t even win it and won $19,000. That’s unbelievable. We got to spend time with family

Reid. He’s due in November.

The first couple years, and last year got in the way a little bit before the end of the season, I had a job where I was doing some stock contracting stuff. We didn’t get to enter how we wanted to. I had different priorities. Now, we’ve had a little bit of success, so our priorities changed as the year has gone on. My whole crew keeps up with it. My mommight check it every day. My whole family supports us all the way. They’re my biggest fans. I try not to look because the fact is it’s still a long season. Anything can happen. We could go win another $50,000 or $60,000, or – rodeo’s a humbling sport – we could go the rest of the year and not win a dollar. I try not to think about howmuch I need to win or what normally makes it. I’m trying to rope every steer and trying to win as much as they allowme to. At the end of the year if it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. We’re trying to enter up and give ourselves a shot at the end.

Climbing the ranks

“I drew a lot of good calves, I roped good and my horse was good. It was really nice to start the summer off like this.” – CADDO LEWALLEN

After the weekend he had June 20-23, tie-down roper Caddo Lewallen is in position to make a run at his first Wrangler NFR. The 35-year-old from Morrison, Okla., earned a combined $7,754 at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo in North Platte, Neb., Innisfail (Alberta) Pro Rodeo and Bonnyville (Alberta) Pro Rodeo ($1,859).

Kimzey on a heater Five-time defending World Champion Bull Rider Sage Kimzey is taking the Great White North by storm. Between June 2-9, the Strong City, Okla., cowboy won the Rocky Pro Rodeo in Rocky Mountain House, Al- berta, and split wins at the Lea Park Rodeo in Marwayne, Alberta, and Leduc (Alberta) Gold Rodeo. Then Kimzey went and won the Wainwright (Alberta) Stampede, July 23. In between, he also won the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo Xtreme Bulls. Between May 29 and June 25, Kimzey won $28,069. Kimzey is again atop the PRCA | RAM World Standings, leading the way with $123,760. “Canada has been good to me so far,” Kimzey said recently. “I’ve always had good luck in Canada, but I have never gone to very many Canadian rodeos in the past. This is the first year I’m going to try and make the Canadian Finals. That’s kind of a bucket-list thing. I have been doing this long enough, and it’s nice to have a little change of pace. It’s different scenery, different people and a nice little change-up.”

COWBOY GRILLE WITH AMBER BAILLIE

What do you think of your rookie year so far? Heath: I didn’t plan on it going this way. I set out to make the circuit finals. Now, it’s exceeded my expectations, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. How do you feel about leading the rookie standings? Heath: There are still a lot of rodeos to go and a lot of guys behind me who rope very good. It’ll be a fun adventure seeing how it all plays out. Why do you think you and Clint Wallace rope well together? Heath: He rides good horses and I throw fast. For six to seven years, we’ve amateur rodeoed and get along well. This winter, he took a chance on me and asked if I wanted to rodeo with him this season. It’s been a great opportunity. What do you hope to achieve by the end of the season? Heath: My main goal is to win Rookie of the Year and make the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, then we’ll see where it goes from there. What’s the next rodeo you’re competing at? Heath: Colorado Springs (Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, July 10) and then Cheyenne (Frontier Days, July 15). What’s been your biggest rodeo achievement? Heath: Lafayette (La.) was my first win this year and got the ball rolling for me. It made me believe, ‘I can do this.’ And your biggest challenge? Heath: Balancing my time being at home with my daughter, Ruby (at right), who is 11, and going to rodeos. She runs barrels and I don’t want to miss her events. What advice have you given your daughter? Heath: To put in the work and to not give up. She’s recently had some success (in barrel racing), and I’ve seen a change in her work ethic. I don’t have to ask her to ride her horse, she just does. I’m 35. Being a “geriatric” rookie, I’ve wanted to prove to her that anything is achievable. How long have you been involved in rodeo? Heath: Growing up, my grandpa owned a cattle ranch and I always helped. I don’t really remember learning how to rope, I just got used to doctoring cattle. I was introduced to Little Britches and then participated in high Heath Williams isn’t your average rookie. The 35-year-old team roping heeler bought his first permit in 2005, competing in the Southeastern Circuit and training horses. But after buying his contestant card last year and partnering with Clint Wallace this season, the Ozark, Ark., cowboy is taking his skills to the next level. As of June 24, he was No. 1 in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings with $13,885 and hopes to finish the season in the same spot.

HEATH WILLIAMS

school rodeo. I also used to show AQHA horses and qualified for the world show several times. Now, I manage Norma Hogan’s ranch, it’s a cattle operation in Ozark and a job to come back to when I’m not rodeoing. I work with Toby Hogan, who is my practice partner in team roping. What do you think it takes to be consistent in roping? Heath: I think there are a lot of variables, but horsemanship is a huge part of it. You can never stop working on that. A lot of people can rope well but your horse makes a big difference. I have a great horse this year, he’s the same everywhere I go, and so I knew I had to buy my contestant card. What’s something you’ve never done before that you would like to try? Heath: I’d really like to cowboy with (team roping header) Derek Begay. I don’t know him but think he’s as good a cowboy as there is. I’d like to hang out with him sometime. … It’s on my bucket list. What is your biggest pet peeve? Heath: Keeping the truck clean when you’re traveling with a bunch of people. I can be OCD about things, and when you’re traveling with four people in a rig, it’s a job. Who has been the biggest mentor in your life? Heath: I’ve had quite a few including Brett Hall, Toby Hogan and Clint Wallace. They’ve all supported me and helped build my confidence. What’s the best rodeo advice you’ve received? Heath: To have short-termmemory in life. If you mess up, don’t let it drag you down or carry it with you. There is always tomorrow. What is your favorite movie? Heath: Lonesome Dove . Who is your favorite musician? Heath: Cody Jinks. What is your favorite restaurant? Heath: Whataburger for fast food, Texas Roadhouse for a sit-down meal.

Horsing Around SHORT ROUND

T he ProRodeo Hall of Fame had two horses arrive June 19 as part of its live animal display at the Hall in Colorado Springs, Colo. Powder River Rodeo’s saddle bronc horse Bartender and bareback/saddle bronc horse Diamond Mine were welcomed to the grounds. Both horses are 25 and retired from ProRodeo competition in 2012. They will be at the ProRodeo Hall of Fame until ProRodeo Hall welcomes horses for summer visit

Diamond Mine and Bartender at their new surroundings.

“We appreciate Powder River Rodeo’s willingness to help with this project. Their horses are some of the best in the business, and we are honored to have Bartender and Diamond Mine with us for the summer.” Bartender was selected to compete at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo seven times. Diamond Mine was selected to compete at the Wrangler NFR in 1999 and took part in many National Circuit Finals Rodeos and Mountain States Circuit Finals Rodeos.

mid-September. The exhibit will be in the ProRodeo Hall of Fame barn and will be accessible by the public (including handicapped accessibility) during regular museum hours of 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (MDT) seven days a week through August, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday in September. “The Rodeo Livestock Exhibit is very popular with our guests,” ProRodeo Hall of Fame Director Kent Sturman said.

Ellensburg Hall of Fame adding two members

Ellensburg Rodeo clown Flint Rasmussen and the Burkheimer Family will be inducted into the Ellensburg (Wash.) Rodeo Hall of Fame, induction committee chair Dr. Ken MacRae announced. The Induction banquet is Aug. 29, 5-8:30 p.m. (PT), at Central Washington University’s Student Union Recreation Center (SURC) Ballroom and will feature ERHOF’s “Boxes of Fame” Western art auction and fundraiser. Rasmussen is being inducted into the “Participant” category while the Burkheimers are being inducted as an “Ellensburg Rodeo Family.” Rasmussen, a Montanan who was the PRCA Clown of the Year from 1998-2005, ranks alongside the most accomplished clowns and barrelmen in professional rodeo history. Rasmussen was the PRCA’s Coors Man in the Can in 1998-99 and 2001-05. John and Frances Burkheimer moved to Ellensburg in 1950 to become ranchers. They quickly became involved in the

community and formed many longstanding friendships over their 28 years ranching. John served on the rodeo board for more than a decade. John and Frances’ daughter, Ann, was the 1959 Ellensburg Rodeo Princess and represented Kittitas County in a wide variety of venues statewide. Son Bob Burkheimer was one of the three founders of the Gold Buckle Club. Son John Jr. was an accomplished horseman and a member of the Kittitas County Junior Sheriff’s Posse. The Burkheimers have been long-time supporters of the Ellensburg Rodeo, organizing and working at Gold Buckle events, maintaining a box at the rodeo, and donating to various rodeo- related causes. Tickets for this year’s Hall of Fame Banquet and Art Auction are available online at www.erhof.com, where supporters may reserve entire tables in advance.

Gunnison rodeo giving back

BY THE NUMBERS 6 The number of rides of 90

Cattlemen’s Days raises money for community One applicant for the Sowing Good Deeds initiative is the Cattlemen’s Days in Gunnison, Colo., a town in southwest Colorado with a population of 15,000. Cattlemen’s Days is the largest annual event for the Gunnison community. The rodeo began in 1900 when local ranchers drove cattle and wild horses onto main street and created a small arena to have horse races, bronc riding and roping events. In addition to the preservation of this Western heritage, the Cattlemen’s Days Rodeo Committee gives back to the community in many ways. This year’s rodeo is July 11-13 at the Fred Field Western Heritage Center. Cattlemen’s Days Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign raises money at the annual Cattlemen’s Days TETWP Concert and Auction and Cattlemen’s Days TETWP Rodeo for breast cancer financial support, treatment and education. Since 2005, Cattlemen’s Days TETWP has raised $2.7 million and is planning to eclipse the $3 million mark this year. More than $1 million has been spent in the community throughout the program. A significant amount of that money has gone toward the purchase of a variety of screening equipment, including a Hologic 3D Tomosynthesis mammography machine, digital ultrasound, digital mammography machine, stereotactic biopsy, PINK robes and warmers – all in use at Gunnison Valley Health. The rodeo committee for Cattlemen’s Days’ latest initiative is using a portion of the ticket sales for the Saturday night rodeo and other events to support the Gunnison Ranchland Conservation Legacy. The Legacy is a conservation entity which helps fund and place conservation easements on ranchlands in the Gunnison Valley to keep the land in agricultural production for perpetuity, protect water rights and wildlife habitat, and ensure that the picturesque landscapes of the Gunnison Valley will be there for future generations to use as working ranches. What started as a community celebration and rodeo has evolved into a volunteer committee which preserves the Western heritage it cherishes through the PRCA Rodeo and other Cattlemen’s Days events. Cattlemen’s Days helps its community members battle breast cancer and helps others at GVH through the state-of-the-art equipment purchased by TETWP. In the book Aloha Rodeo: Three Hawaiian Cowboys, the World’s Greatest Rodeo, and a Hidden History of the American West (William Morrow; $27.99), acclaimed authors and journalists David Wolman and Julian Smith captivatingly illuminate this little-known and dramatic episode in American history. The book details the journey of Hawaiians Ikua Purdy, Archie Ka’au’a and Jack Low from the islands of Hawaii to the Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days in the early 1900s. With them they carried pride and hope of the islands. Aloha Rodeo chronicles the parallel rise of the cowboy – paniolo, in Hawaiian – culture in Hawaii and that most American of sports, rodeo, culminating in the amazing year when those worlds collided. points or more at the last two PRCA Division 1 Xtreme Bulls events – the 42nd George Paul Memorial Xtreme Bulls Divi- sion 1 event April 26-27 in Del Rio, Texas, and the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo Xtreme Bulls event June 20. The high-scored rides were Stetson Wright’s 93.5-point ride on All In Pro Rodeos’ Smoke Show in Reno and Trevor Reiste’s 91.5-point trip on Silver Creek Rodeo’s Time To Shine in Del Rio. 20 The number of times Rod Hay qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (1989- 90, 1992-2008, 2010). Saddle bronc rider Billy Etbauer qualified for the Wrangler NFR 21 times. Hay’s son, Dawson, won the Wainwright (Alberta) Stampede on June 23. $12K The amount of money, $12,413, Trevor Brazile earned at the 2013 Greeley (Colo.) Stampede, the record for an all- around champion at that rodeo dating to 1953. Brazile has won 14 all-around gold buckles and 24 gold buckles overall, both PRCA records. The 2019 Greeley Stampede runs June 27 through July 3.

As a proud sponsor of the PRCA, AGCO® Corporation, through its brands Hesston® and Massey Ferguson, recognize that PRCA-sanctioned rodeos contribute significant support for local, regional and national charities and organizations. These charitable efforts by rodeo committees are making a positive impact on members of the various communities. Hesston and Massey Ferguson, through its Sowing Good Deeds initiative, want to raise awareness of these local efforts and reward one PRCA committee each year whose impact goes above and beyond.
