DIRECTOR’S CUT SCOTT KANIEWSKI

Cave Creek Rodeo Days brings back ProRodeo R usty Wright started dreaming about going to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. And we’re not talking Channel and the app), which will round out the brackets fromHouston, which was cut short mid-rodeo because of the pandemic. Then a number of rodeos are scheduled during June. Cave Creek has brought back the feeling that rodeo is close to ramping up. Yes, Cowboy Christmas during the Fourth of July is going to look different, with some of those rodeos postponing or canceling. But with a month between now and then, those rodeos

about envisioning it or wishing about it. “Actual dreams, going to the NFR,” he said. That’s when he knew he was missing ProRodeo. He wasn’t necessarily nervous about competing at Cave Creek (Ariz.) Rodeo Days, but he also wasn’t as comfortable as normal when he was at the chute. In fact, he had a funny moment of doubt. “Honestly, when I went to step over, I went, what foot do I usually put? I was thrown off for a minute there,” Wright laughed after his ride May 24. After a layoff of more than two months, Cave Creek Rodeo Days was the first ProRodeo to host live action. (Check out full coverage on pages 26-29.) Wright’s excitement mirrored that of so many other cowboys, contract personnel and fans. It was that feeling that included a mix of anticipation and the realization that ProRodeo was happening. The Cave Creek rodeo committee worked diligently with the Arizona governor’s office and local officials, plus the PRCA, to do what it needed to do to help cowboys and contract personnel get back to work. The event was fanless, the chutes were sprayed down with disinfectant after rides and everyone that wasn’t the immediate competitor donned a mask to help prevent any spread. Just to get onto the rodeo grounds, anyone attempting to enter had their temperature screened. Fans were able to watch live onThe Cowboy Channel or could stream live on the PRCA on Cowboy Channel Plus App. Up next is the Super Series Finish (also airing on Cowboy

slated for that time have a good possibility of happening. The success of Cave Creek paves a path for other rodeos. “I can’t say a big-enough thank you to the committee for sticking their neck out,” tie-down roper Ryle Smith said. “I know it probably cost them a lot of stress planning and hoping it would work. And we all showed up.” Wright drove down with his uncle Spencer and Mitch Pollock, plus Wright’s youngest brother. “I woke up this morning and was super excited, almost like Christmas,” Wright said. “We jumped in the truck, and it was all I could think about, getting on today.” Smith summed it up a different way. “It’s been so different,” he said. “This will be the year nobody will forget.” This year will be unforgettable. In a way, the pandemic split the season into two halves: pre-pandemic and post- pandemic. We’re into the post-pandemic half, with four months remaining in the regular season and the race back on for the NFR. Cowboys throughout the PRCA can get excited to rodeo again. It might not be as frequent as a normal season. But make no mistake, ProRodeo is back.

Scott Kaniewski is the Media Director at the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. He previously served more than two years as the editor of ProRodeo Sports News. He has nearly two decades of experience in sports journalism, with the last few being consumed by ProRodeo.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH MATT NABER

You won $8,521 in October. What was that month like? Cole: It was the first time I had been to Texas, and I was feeling good and wanted to kick things off with a bang. I was winning money everywhere I went. It was fun to start the year off like that. How does this pandemic impact your approach to the 2020 season? Cole: There’s nothing we could do about it, so there’s no need to worry. I keep looking at the (PRCA) Business Journal , waiting for big rodeos to open, and when they do, we will start winning again. We’re not in a rush since we’re doing good in the world standings. Do you have a nickname? Cole: Nah – Cole is too short. We’ve been doing as much dumb stuff as we can to try to get a nickname. How did you get into rodeo in the first place? Cole: I grew up team roping and calf roping a bit, never did any roughstock, but I got tired of roping and wanted to do something different. I’m friends with Dylan Sandvick (son of Larry Sandvick, a 12-time NFR qualifier), and so I used Larry’s rigging. Everyone in Kaycee and Buffalo, Wyo., have been great, all of Johnson County has supported me. I went to Sheridan (Wyo.) College for a year and then transferred to Casper (Wyo.) College, and the rodeo coach there, Jhett Johnson, helped me a lot mentally since he’s a world champion team roper (2011) and a great guy. Why do you compete in bareback riding? legend turned platinum country musician Chris LeDoux. The 21-year-old cowboy is doing his hometown proud atop the 2020 PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings for bareback riding and being among the Top 15 of the PRCA | RAM World Standings. Reiner won the 2019 PRCA | RAM Rodeo Permit Standings for bareback riding with $25,406 and kicked off his rookie season with five checks in October followed by big paydays in Fort Worth, Texas, and San Antonio in February. Rookie bareback rider Cole Reiner has some big boots to fill, having grown up in Kaycee, Wyo., the hometown of ProRodeo

COLE REINER

Cole: What keeps you in it is it’s so fast and exciting. I wasn’t going to rodeo professionally and didn’t have any interest in it until my senior year of high school. I was wrestling, but during my last semester of high school the Sheridan College rodeo coach asked if I was interested, and I figured I would stay in Wyoming and rodeo. Bareback riding is relatable to wrestling because you’re in a fight the whole time and it’s fast and before you know it it’s over. But it’s such an adrenaline rush, and nothing else has given me that feeling. What’s your favorite part about rodeoing? Cole: I like the national anthem – you’ve got the rigging on and your adrenaline is pumping. That’s the coolest part of the rodeo, the crowd is ready to go, and it gets your hair standing up and your switch is flipped. What do you miss the most about rodeo? Cole: We’ve been home for two months, and I can’t wait to be on the road driving somewhere. When you’re on the road, you’re ready to be done driving. That’s honestly something I didn’t think I would miss a bunch. What would be the best song to have playing while you’re in the chute and about to compete? Cole: I like “Shout At The Devil” by Mötley Crüe. I like how it starts out; it gets you fired up. What kind of workout routine do you have to keep up with the demands of bareback riding? Cole: We’re doing a lot of CrossFit, but it’s more lightweight with more reps and a lot of core workouts since everything in bareback riding involves your core. What’s your favorite food for making progress in the gym? Cole: McDonald’s, ha, ha! … Actually, I didn’t like avocados until I got to Texas, but we’re doing a lot of that and salads. What’s your favorite food that isn’t geared toward fitness? Cole : Pizza and wings. What’s your favorite movie or TV show? Cole : I like stupid TV shows, like “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and “Trailer Park Boys” and watch a lot of The Cowboy Channel rodeos, that’s a lot of fun. Which celebrity do people say you look like? Cole: Oh, I don’t know, I’m a mix between Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise.

TIME CAPSULE DON HARRINGTON

Harrington served on PRCA board, announced and competed DeVere Helfrich photo Although Don Harrington was known primarily as a ProRodeo announcer, he got his start as a bareback rider and competed at big rodeos like Red Bluff, Calif., in 1964.

Mr. Pepsi

BY MATT NABER K nown as “Mr. Pepsi,” Don Harrington led a ProRodeo career that was as sweet as the drinks his family introduced to Montana. Born in April 1925, Harrington served four years in the Navy during WorldWar II, helped start the University of Montana rodeo team, and announced rodeos across the U.S. and Canada, including the National Finals Rodeo in 1970. Harrington’s father was the first soft drink bottler in Montana and brought the first Pepsi franchise to the state in 1937. And although he continued his father’s business throughout his life, Harrington’s love of ranching and rodeo began in his teens with visits to Hugh Murphy’s ranch in Browns Gulch, Mont. The Butte, Mont., cowboy competed in his first rodeos in high school. After WWII he helped start the University of Montana rodeo team, where he competed in bareback riding and tie-down roping. He graduated with a business administration degree in 1950. Harrington joined the family business in 1953, which brought on the nickname Mr. Pepsi. One year later, he joined the PRCA, spending his first year as a bareback rider, announcer and secretary. Following his marriage to Shirley Davis in 1955, Harrington switched from bareback riding to tie- down roping. In addition to competing, Harrington started announcing rodeos when another announcer didn’t show up and often announced while competing at a rodeo. He was the only man to announce the NFR, the National High School Finals Rodeo and the College National Finals Rodeo

in the same year. As busy as he was with the family business, he always made time for rodeo in Big Sky Country. Harrington and his son Mark also had a ranch in Sheridan, Mont., where they ran 500 head of commercial angus cattle and 60 American Quarter Horses. Harrington’s daughter, Lynn, married PRCA steer wrestler Fred Hirschy. Harrington donated young horses each year to Montana State University, the University of Montana Western and 4-H to help their equine programs. Harrington also served on the PRCA board. “I was at the meeting when Benny Binion, who owned the big hotel in Las Vegas, said if you fellas would move the rodeo fromOklahoma City to Las Vegas, Nevada, those cowboys will have more money than they’ve ever had in their life. And he was right (laughs),” Harrington told the Great Falls Tribune in January 2013. He also announced at the first Montana Circuit Finals Rodeo in Bozeman, a role he held for more than 15 years. Harrington was honored with the Ben Johnson Award by the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City in 2002. In 2013, Harrington was honored by the American Quarter Horse Association for registering Quarter Horse foal crops for 50 consecutive years. “Everybody has to have something in life he enjoys. Rodeo is mine,” Harrington told ProRodeo Sports News in March 1982. “That’s what life is all about!” Harrington died of natural causes Sept. 30, 2013, at 88 at his ranch home in Dillon, Mont.

Pandemic forces cancellation of the ‘Daddy of ’em All’ Cheyenne Canceled SHORT ROUND

O n May 27, Cheyenne Frontier Days announced that public health and safety concerns related to the coronavirus pandemic have forced the cancellation of the July 17-26, 2020, event. The decision was made in conjunction with the other major summertime events in Wyoming and is in accordance with Gov. Mark Gordon’s direction and state and local health orders. This is the first time in the 124- year history of the iconic celebration of Western culture that Cheyenne Frontier Days will not be held. Commonly referred to as the “Daddy of ’em All,” Cheyenne is the world’s largest outdoor rodeo and Western celebration. Rodeo contestants rely on the Cheyenne event to be one of the largest payouts on the annual PRCA rodeo circuit. It also features some of country music’s biggest stars performing before sold-out crowds at the Frontier Nights concerts. “This has been an incredibly difficult decision, but ... it was the only choice,” said Tom Hirsig, Cheyenne Frontier Days CEO. “The PRCA understands that the health and safety of the fans, members, contestants and countless volunteers at Cheyenne

come first,” PRCA CEO George Taylor said. “The Daddy of ’em All will come back bigger and stronger next year.” Hirsig said the rodeo knows how devastating this decision will be for many fans who return year after year, as well as first- timers planning to come because “the Daddy” is on their bucket list. The cancellation will also have a severe economic impact in the community. Hundreds of thousands of people attend CFD concerts, rodeo performances and the related Western events each year, contributing millions of dollars to the local economy. Fans who have already purchased rodeo or concert tickets can visit the CFD website for information about account credit rollovers or refunds at www.cfdrodeo.com.

The Rodeo Stronger initiative of the St. Paul (Ore.) Rodeo Foundation is announcing the first round of grants for $30,000. These grants will assist stock contractors with the care and feeding of their livestock through the COVID-19 crisis. As of now, 10 stock contractors from seven states, collectively feeding more than 3,000 head of rodeo livestock, have applied for financial assistance. “There are no unemployment funds, PPP loans or stimulus checks available to stock contractors to feed the thousands of head of rodeo livestock which are out of work due to the cancellation of rodeo events nationwide,” said Doug Corey, DVM, who serves on the Rodeo Stronger Advisory Committee. The initiative, launched May 8, is giving 100% of the donations to assist in caring for rodeo livestock. Donations are being accepted online and multiple fundraisers are being discussed for this vital cause. For more information or to donate, go to www.rodeostronger.com. Wright has plates, screws removed Although 2019 All-Around World Champion

Stetson Wright wanted to be rodeoing, the break in action due to the COVID-19 pandemic allowed his body to heal. During the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo,

the Milford, Utah, cowboy was banged up during a Feb. 19 ride aboard 4L & Diamond S Rodeo’s Relentless after the bull stepped on the right side of his pelvis. A day later, Wright drew Powder River Rodeo’s SweetPro’s Bruiser. During the ride, Bruiser pulled Wright down and tore the medial collateral ligament in his right knee. Fast-forward to May 15, when Wright had surgery in St. George, Utah, to take plates out of his face that were put in after he broke his jaw following a ride at the Dodge City (Kan.) Roundup Rodeo, July 31. “I had five plates and a bunch of screws from my chin down the right side of my face, and I had all the plates and screws taken out,” Wright said. “It was bothering me really bad. When I walked out of surgery, I immediately felt better. The pain had dropped. I could have left the plates in, but my body was rejecting them, and they were infected. I can deal with the pain in my body, but not my face. The pain was unbearable. I feel so much better.” Wright

Super Series Finish set to conclude May 29-31

BY THE NUMBERS 397 The total number of entries at Cave

While all ProRodeos were put on pause in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Super Series Finish will conclude the bracket competition that started in Houston. The competition will take place at the Cowtown Coliseum in the Fort Worth (Texas) Stockyards, May 29-31 with the Super Series Finish presented in part by the hit-TV show “Yellowstone.” In the name of keeping fans, contestants and rodeo personnel safe from the virus, the only way to see the action unfold is by tuning into The Cowboy Channel or getting the PRCA on Cowboy Channel Plus App. The coverage, which will be at 8 p.m. (ET) Friday, and 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, will include feature commentary from “Yellowstone” Executive Producer Taylor Sheridan. Repeat airings are scheduled for midnight. “I think they’re going to see a rodeo, it’s what we have all missed,” saddle bronc rider Jacobs Crawley said. “There will be the masks, but the competition is what you’d expect with great rides and fast runs, and I’m excited to see it again after a few months. It’s the longest break I’ve had from rodeo in 15 years. I think the glass half-full part is that guys have had a chance to heal up and light that fire again of wanting to rodeo – it’s the two together.” Crawley, 32, is a nine-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (2011-19) and the 2015

Creek (Ariz.) Rodeo Days, May 22-24. It was the first ProRodeo since the COVID-19 pandemic halted events in mid-March. 11 The PRCA- record number of times Trevor Brazile qualified for the National Finals in three events in one year. He did steer roping in 2003-04, 2006- 11, 2013-15. 25 The number of five-time world champion steer wrestler Luke Branquinho has had at the Wrangler Nationals Finals Rodeo, an event record. it in tie-down roping, team roping and career go- round wins

world champion. The Texas cowboy has won $1.87 million in ProRodeo. The Super Series Finish will feature 64 contestants in each bracket and seven performances. Crawley frequently competed at that arena while in high school. “I grew up going to that rodeo and that arena as a teenager, and it’ll be different to see it with everything else this weekend,” Crawley said. “But, it’s definitely a ‘back to your roots’ kind of thing.” Several of this weekend’s competitors have the bonus of living nearby, such as Crawley who is coming in from about an hour away in Stephenville. “It’s very convenient,” Crawley said. “I’m looking forward to a nice trip up, then get on a bucking horse and go home at night.” As far as how this weekend’s competition will pan out, it’s a clean slate. “What I can be sure of is cowboys are excited to rodeo and everyone is hungry for it,” Crawley said. “Hopefully the people can see that on TV through the masks.”
