IN HIS OWNWORDS: CHANT D E FOREST FAST START HAS TEAM ROPER LOOKING FOR MORE
Team roping header Chant DeForest is having one of his best seasons. As of June 12, the 26-year-old fromWheatland, Calif., was ranked 12th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings in the all-around, 28th in the team roping heading standings and 58th in tie-down roping. DeForest and his team roping heeling partner, Bronc Boehnlein, swept the Santa Maria (Calif.) Elks Rodeo.
committee does quite a bit for the contestants. At Santa Maria, we won both rounds and the average. That shows how we go about it. We’re going to try to win first. The second one we just had to catch him, and they couldn’t beat us in the average. We were five-seconds flat in the second round. I had three or four people say they were surprised we didn’t just go catch him. Bronc and I looked at each other and said, we usually don’t win if we just go catch him. I used to say tie-down roping was my best event, but it’s been team roping lately. Part of that has to do with my head horse. I’ve been pretty lucky, my mare, Blackie, 14, she’s one of the best going. My family raised her. We’ve also got some younger ones coming up who are going to be really good. My good tie-down roping horse is Foster. He’s 16. We got him when he was about 7 or 8. We made him into a tie-down roping horse. The last couple years, I was a rodeo coach at Feather River College in Quincy, Calif. The two years before that I was an assistant coach and then the head coach for a semester at Western Oklahoma State College in Altus, Okla. I really enjoy coaching and really enjoy helping high school kids and college kids. I wouldn’t mind getting back into coaching eventually. The job I have now is a good opportunity for me. I grew up on a ranch. My parents ran cows, and I always worked for them. It plays into what I do. I hope to have cows and go in that direction. For the most part, I’m a circuit cowboy. I don’t go much out of the circuit. I’m happy with where I am in the standings, it’s a neat accomplishment because I haven’t gone hard. I’ve hardly left the state. I’ve been to about 20 rodeos. For what I have won, I’ve been lucky. I had a really good spring, and a really good fall. I’m pretty happy and proud.
M y brother, C.J., and I used to rope together a lot, but then he got married and moved. Through him and his wife, I met Bronc. C.J. had shoulder surgery, so Bronc and I started roping together. C.J. and I planned to rope again together after he got healthy, but Bronc and I got to winning. Then C.J. started winning with Blake Teixeira. It all worked out pretty good for both of us. Bronc and I head to the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo on Sunday, where we’ll team rope and I’ll also tie-down rope. I’m excited because I feel the momentum is in our favor right now. It makes you want to go when you feel like every time you nod your head you’re going to win something. Hopefully we can win good there. Then we’ll have to go a little bit more. I just started a new job at a ranch taking care of cows, so I’m working more. I can’t go rodeo a ton more. We’re in the Top 30 right now. If we can go win good there (at Reno), we’re going to be close to the Top 15. So, we’ll have to try and sneak away a little bit more. I’ve talked about it a little with my boss. He understands. I’m going to try to get away enough where I don’t just give a chance away. Winning Santa Maria was cool. I’ve won the tie-down roping there twice and won the team roping there twice now. It’s been a good rodeo to me. The

GRILLE COWBOY
Bull rider BRADEN RICHARDSON is a man on a mission. After wins at the Redding (Calif.) Rodeo and theWharton County (Texas) Youth Fair Xtreme Bulls Division 2, the 23-year-old, Jasper, Texas, cowboy is ranked third in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings and determined to qualify for theWrangler National Finals Rodeo.
WITH AMBE BAILLIE PSN
How did you get into bull riding? Braden: Growing up I watched my stepbrother ride calves and mini broncs, and I took an interest in it. Are you a full-time bull rider or do you have another job? Braden: I’m full time; I’m getting better each year, moving up the ranks. I made the decision to compete full time once I started making enough money from bull riding. What does it feel like to ride a bull? Braden: Like a roller-coaster ride or a dance. If you’re in perfect timing, then nothing feels easier. What is a misconception about bull riding? Braden: Everyone says it’s only eight seconds, but there is a big fear factor in bull riding. Once you’re put in the bucking chutes and have to put a rope on the bull, it’s not just eight seconds. You can get intimidated quickly if you let yourself. What’s been your worst injury? Braden: When I broke my neck and back. When I broke my neck, I also had five broken ribs and a collapsed lung. When I broke my back, I had other injuries with it, too. Are you in good health right now? Braden: Yes. When I won Redding (Rodeo) this year, I was fighting an injury with my riding hand. I had to go to the doctor and take a few weeks off, but now I’m back on my toes. How do you stay fit for the sport? Braden: I work out every day at the gym, I do a lot of core exercises. A strong core really helps your balance. A lot of bulls will have some downdraft, so if your core isn’t strong the bull will pull you down. What made you want a PRCA card ?
Braden: Ever since I was little I’ve had the goal to win Rookie of the Year and to qualify for the NFR. It would be a dream come true to compete at the Finals because when you’re among the Top 15 you’re with the big dogs. How do you feel about the season so far? Braden: Good. I had to take medical leave during some big rodeos like Fort Worth and Denver but have healed well and feel like I have enough time to move up in the world standings. Who’s been your toughest competitor this year? Braden: The way I see it, my only competitor is the bull. I want my friends to win and I know that if I stay on for eight seconds, I’ve done my job. What has been your proudest moment in your career?
Braden: Getting my first Xtreme Bulls win (at Wharton County Youth Fair). I was in the last section and knew I had a bull that hadn’t been ridden. My buddy Cooper Davis, who is from the same town as me, was in the lead until I scored 88 points and took first. I look up to some of the guys who were there and wanted to do well in
front of them. That was a proud moment. What other interests/hobbies do you have? Braden: I enjoy wildlife and playing baseball. I also have an 8-month-old dog, named Tigger, who is my traveling partner and best friend. What else do you want people to know about you? Braden: I’m determined to go to the NFR. As soon as I bought my card last year things started to click, and I realized it was game time. On the professional level, everything is on a bigger stage: the caliber of bulls, people in the stands, and the cowboys that you’ve watched on TV are at the rodeos. What has helped you stay focused? Braden: Beginning my freshman year of college (Panola College in Texas), I made a goal to start going to the gym every day and have kept with it. By putting in the work and hours it has helped me get focused. Also, during college I’d get paid to ride bulls owned by local stock contractors. I rode decent and stock contractors wanted to see what their bulls could do. I would ride about 10 a week, and that experience took me to another level. How do you prepare for a ride? Braden: About an hour before, I’ll drink a Red Bull and sometimes listen to rapper Kevin Gates. His music fires me up, it’s positive motivation and gets my mind in the right place. I also say a prayer when the bull is being loaded into the chute.

C owboy Christmas is a long- standing tradition in ProRodeo. While the events have changed to include team roping and bar- rel racing, the mad dash for cash during the week of July 4 remains the same. While the 50-year-old payouts of $12,000 at St. Paul and Greeley may seem small by today’s standards, those totals equate to about $89,000 in 2018 dollars, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those two rodeos have far exceeded the rate of inflation as St. Paul paid out $352,273 last year and Greeley paid $322,162. R OUND THE SHORT BY THE NUMBERS The number of saddle bronc riding world titles Casey Tibbs and
Hometown Rodeo PRCA to sanction Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo set for July
Dan Mortensen won during their respective careers, tied for the PRCA- event record. Tibbs won his saddle bronc crowns in 1949, 1951-54 and 1959. Tibbs was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame with the inaugural class in 1979. Mortensen, who won his world titles in 1993-95, 1997-98 and 2003, was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2009. The total payout, $491,909, for the 2017 Reno Rodeo. The 2018 Reno Rodeo is June 15-23 and is part of the new Wrangler ProRodeo Tour.
The PRCA and the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo announced June 4 the 78th edition of the rodeo will be sanctioned by the PRCA. The PRCA and the PPOB Rodeo have a long-standing history, and both organizations are pleased to be getting together to provide another opportunity at big money for PRCA contestants. “The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo
has tradition that is deeply rooted in the PRCA’s hometown of Colorado Springs, and we are thrilled to be partnering with them,” PRCA CEO George Taylor said. “This rodeo offers the contestants tremendous hospitality, a packed crowd to compete in front of and an opportunity to earn a large payday.”

It is truly a win-win situation for us both. We can continue the championship format that our fans love, while our contestants can earn top prize money that will count toward the world standings and their quest for the National Finals.” The top 38 competitors in the PRCA | RAM World Standings will qualify for the PPOB Rodeo. Prairie committee donates to cancer center The Chisholm Trail RAM Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo committee donated $1,000 on June 7 to the Taylor Le Norman/McCastland Cancer Center at Duncan (Okla.) Regional Hospital and $1,000 to Relay for Life. Joe Henderson, a board member for the group, personally delivered the check to staff at the cancer center. He said the money is from profits and proceeds earned from the rodeo last October. The RAM Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo was held Oct. 19-21, in Duncan, Okla. “We do the Prairie Circuit Finals each year in October, and we’re fortunate to have extra money,” Henderson said in the June 8 edition of The Duncan (Okla.) Banner . “We feel like we need to give back to the community with that.” This was not the rodeo’s first time making a contribution to the community. It has been giving proceeds to other organizations in need for the last seven years. Smith to speak at North Dakota Cowboy Hall Stran Smith, 2008 PRCA World Champion Tie-down Roper, will be a guest speaker during the 2018 North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Medora. Formal recognition for this year’s inductees will commence at 6 p.m. (MT), June 15, with a dinner at the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame. The dinner welcomes inductees, their families and friends, and is open to the public. The induction ceremony follows at 1 p.m., June 16, at Tjaden Terrace, also in Medora and open to the public. This is the 24th year honoring individuals, ranches and organizations which have made significant contributions to the development of North Dakota’s livestock industry, ranching or Western lifestyle. The 2018 Class of Inductees are: Jack Reich, leader in ranching and rodeo; Dave Dahl, pre-1970 rodeo; Nevada Jorgenson, modern-era rodeo; Larry Sandvick, modern-era rodeo; Chad Berger, rodeo arena; Steve Weekes, pre-1940 ranching; Ralph Murray, modern-era ranching; Top Hand, rodeo livestock; Olson Ranch, ranches.
Flying U Rodeo’s Against All Odds dies The storied stock contracting company Flying U Rodeo lost one of its top bucking horses, Against All Odds. The multi-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo saddle bronc horse passed away June 7 after a two-year battle with cancer. He was 13. “He had skin cancer that was on his lip and we had to treat him weekly,” said Flying U Rodeo’s Reno Rosser. “It just got to the point where his life was going to be miserable. It’s tough (him passing) because bucking horses are so hard to come by anymore. You can find a bucking bull around every corner, but bucking horses are hard to find, and saddle bronc horses on top of that. I have a whole field of bareback horses, but great saddle broncs are hard to find.” Against All Odds was a great one for Flying U Rodeo Company. He most recently competed at the Wrangler NFR in 2015. “He’s one of the top 10 horses we’ve had, and considering we’ve been in business over 65 years that’s pretty good,” Rosser said. Against All Odds was born in 2005 and enjoyed an eight-year career as a bucking horse. “He was a small horse, but he could throw them off regardless the size of the cowboy,” Rosser said. “It is rare to see a horse that small in size have as much success as a bucking horse, which is why we named him ‘Against All Odds.’ What he lacked in size, he made up with heart.” According to a post on Flying U Rodeo Company’s Facebook page, it is estimated that cowboys won more than $300,000 on Against All Odds over his career. The horse was buried June 7 at the Flying U Ranch in Marysville, Calif., where all other Flying U Rodeo Company’s livestock legends rest.
