DIRECTOR’S CUT SCOTT KANIEWSKI Matt Palmer shines at Xtreme Bulls Tour Finale A s Matt Palmer stood on the Happy Canyon Arena dirt, he looked up into the stands at 5,000 fans, a grin as wide as the nearby Umatilla River on his face. The 22-year-old rookie fromClaremore, Okla., had just ridden four consecutive bulls over two nights to claim the 2021 PendletonWhisky Xtreme Bulls Finale.

average with 320 points on four head. All told, he netted $12,741. He knew the pressure coming into the event. As he put it, if he didn’t do well at the X Bulls Finale or the Pendleton Round- Up, only the ProRodeo Tour Finale presented by Pendleton Whisky in Salinas, Calif., would offer a chance to make up ground. And he has ground to make up. He entered the Xtreme Bulls event 21st in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings, $14,189 outside the Top 15. Only 15 days left to qualify for the Wrangler NFR. Two weeks before it looked even bleaker. Palmer was 24th in the standings with $42,042 – more than $24,000 away from reaching a dream. At Ellensburg, he got over the hump. Not only did he cover his eight seconds, he held on for an 88.5-point ride on Corey & Lange Rodeo’s Freaky Friday to win the round, the average and a beautiful buckle that he wore at Pendleton. It set the tone for Palmer. He looked up into the stands and realized that on Wednesday afternoon he would be climbing aboard his fifth bull in three days, this time on the famed grass infield at the Pendleton Round-Up. Palmer took a few deep breaths while on the arena dirt. He held back the tears of joy. Instead, he let the smile on his face grow. He looked at the Xtreme Bulls Tour Finale championship buckle in his hands. He showed it off. He talked about how “slick” some of the Xtreme Bulls buckles were that fellow bull riders were sporting. Whether he keeps wearing the Ellensburg buckle or switches to the tour champion buckle doesn’t matter. “This is a dream come true,” he said. “I’m just marking my name in the history books, and I love it, baby.”

Palmer stared at the fans cheering for him, stunned by what he’d just accomplished. The rookie bull rider tried to take it all in. He tried to fight back the tears the way he’d fought to stay on Sankey Pro Rodeo & PhenomGenetics’ Bad Time in the first round, Beutler & Son Rodeo’s No Doubt in round two, Sankey Pro Rodeo & PhenomGenetics’ Time For Magic in round three and 4L &Diamond S Rodeo’s Rustler’s Roost to cap it off. Not only had he never ridden four consecutive bulls in two days in ProRodeo, he’d never even been on four bulls in two days. He looked up into those stands and saw the first time he got on a sheep. His family didn’t have rodeo roots. The family was driving by a rodeo and Palmer and his brother, Jesse, “started freakin’ out” when they noticed a rodeo. Their folks turned in to the event, and both Matt and Jesse got on sheep for some mutton bustin’. They held on for dear life. After progressing to calves and steers, Matt is still hanging on. “Man, when you’re at these big rodeos and they’ve got this many fans, it makes the hair stand up on my arms and the back of my neck,” Palmer said. “It just gives me that feeling like no other.” He didn’t score a ton of money through those four rounds. His scores of 81.5, 72, 80 and 87.5 earned him a combined $2,401. But those scores led to a windfall – $10,340 for winning the

How did you get your start in rodeo? Jesse: I’ve kind of always done it. I started riding sheep when I was 4, and just fell in love with it from that point on. I worked my way up from riding calves, steers, and then eventually bulls. When did you know you could make a career out of rodeo? Jesse: At a young age I thought I could be a world champion, it’s what I really wanted, but you never really know if you can make it or not. It wasn’t really until this year when things took off for me and that success allowed me to stay on the road. That’s when I realized I might have what it takes to make it. What drew you to the sport of rodeo? In his first year of ProRodeo, Jesse Hopper is climbing up the PRCA bull riding ranks in a hurry. The Mangum, Okla., cowboy sits 26th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings after winning the Northwest Montana Fair and Rodeo in Kalispell, Mont., on Aug. 21. It was his second rodeo win of the season. Hopper is third in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings.

Jesse: I just love the one-on-one challenge the sport offers, it’s you versus the bull. If you win it’s because you, did you what you were supposed to if you don’t you didn’t prepare yourself enough. You can’t blame anyone else for your shortcomings. Why did you decide bull riding would be your event? Jesse: It may be the adrenaline that comes with it, but just love the challenge that comes with trying to ride bulls. Have you tried any other rodeo events? Jesse: I’ve never really tried anything else competition-wise. A couple members of my family rope, so I thought I would try that, but being left-handed made things a little difficult. So, that’s about as far as that went. Is there someone in the sport that you look up to? Jesse: Coming up in the sport I’ve always been a huge Justin McBride guy. He was a gritty, tough cowboy who did just about anything to stay on. What’s this season been like for you? Jesse: It started off a little rocky for me, I broke my foot early on getting off a practice bull. So, the summer run is where things finally started clicking for me and I started making a little bit of money. Hopefully this late season success gets me into the big rodeos next year. What’s one rodeo you want to win during your career? Jesse: I’m like a ton of guys and want to win the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. I think it’s at the top of the list for a lot of people. What’s your favorite TV show? Jesse: I don’t get to watch a ton of live tv on the road, so Netflix is our go to. The only thing I’ve watched over the last month or so is the second season of “Outer Banks.” What’s your favorite candy? Jesse: I definitely eat a lot of peach rings, those things are delicious. What’s your go-to meal when you’re on the road? Jesse: Just a good cheeseburger from anywhere always does it for me. It’s hard to get a bad burger when we are on the road. What’s your favorite restaurant? Jesse: I’d probably have to say Chili’s. A lot of the guys I travel with like to stop there, so that’s probably my favorite nowadays. What do you do when you’re not rodeoing?

Jesse: I like to hangout and go fishing with my friends when I’m working or rodeoing. Right now, though most my time is being spent on rodeo, which definitely isn’t a bad thing. What’s your favorite holiday? Jesse: I’d have to say the Fourth of July is my favorite holiday. I love all the fireworks and getting to see everyone. What was your favorite cartoon growing up? Jesse: I still watch a ton of “Tom and Jerry,” I’m still a little kid at heart. I like the old-school cartoons compared to the shows of today.

The 23-year-old from Melstone, Mont., notched a 90.5-point ride on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Ricky Bobby to win the Tri- State Rodeo. The big score moved Newman to within striking distance of the Top 15 in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. He climbed to 16th and was $502 behind No. 15.

SHORT ROUND Clint Johnson named 2021 Legend of ProRodeo Rodeo Legend

P roRodeo Hall of Fame saddle bronc rider Clint Johnson has been named the 2021 Legend of ProRodeo. Johnson will be honored at the 14th annual Wrangler Gold Buckle Gala on Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. (PT) at the South oint Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. “I absolutely did not think this was an option for me,” said Johnson, 65. “This is quite an honor. There’s been a list of prominent people who have received this honor, and I’m quite excited to be among them. I would like to thank the selection committee for choosing me, and I’m looking forward to a fun event.” Johnson began his rodeo career at age 10, and his smooth, consistent style of riding saddle bronc horses led to 11 consecutive qualifications for the National Finals Rodeo from 1979-89. In those 11 career NFR trips he won four world championships (1980, 1987-89) and finished no worse than sixth in the world standings. He also won the NFR average in 1989. Johnson was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1992 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Johnson, who spent four years on the PRCA Board of Directors serving as vice chairman, was born in Spearfish, S.D. Johnson lived there until moving to the Amarillo, Texas, area where he has lived since 1988. Johnson also won his share of prestigious rodeos, including taking home the Calgary Stampede Rodeo’s $50,000 bonus three times.
