I enjoy being from a small town a lot. You know about everybody, and there are a lot of nice people in that small town. It’s like a big-time family, super-nice people. If anything happens to anybody, everybody knows about it. If anything happens to me with rodeo everybody knows about it. It’s kind of nice. A lot of town people keep track of how I’m doing. If I ever do something good, they post something up in the bar or where people are around. I’m going to Kissimmee for the second time. After that first trip, I learned just to do my thing. I put too much pressure on myself to do good. I just didn’t ride like me down there. I’m looking forward to competing with all those guys and for all that money, that’s the main thing, that and to get on good horses. It took quite a bit Bareback rider Blake Smith has plenty of supporters pulling for him to make his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The 27-year-old is from Zap, N.D., a town of fewer than 300 people. In a town that small, it’s easy to know what other residents are up to, Smith says. As of Feb. 20, Smith was 14th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $14,349. He has an opportunity to add to that total with trips to The American Semifinals in Arlington, Texas, RodeoHouston, the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla., and Rodeo Austin (Texas) slated during March. In his three previous seasons of ProRodeo, Smith has never earned more than $30,000. But healthy and ready to go, he’s aiming to change that in 2019.

to get there this year. I had to really rodeo. It was awesome making it. I’ve been hurt about every year. My rookie year was the only year I wasn’t hurt. I’ve had a bunch of wrecks. Last year I didn’t get to start rodeoing until the end of May, early June, because I had shoulder surgery the year before. Then two years before that I fractured my back, tore my rotator cuff and dislocated my neck at a college rodeo. It’s like I’ve had only one full year of rodeo. Hopefully this year I’ll stay healthy. I’ve put more effort into my bareback riding in the last two years than I ever have. I went and worked for (ProRodeo Hall of Famer) Wayne Herman, the 1992 Bareback Riding World Champion who made the Finals 11 times. I worked for him, and we’d talk about bareback riding two to three times a week. We’d break stuff down. Then, I got a personal trainer to keep my physical shape a lot better. Hopefully that’ll keep me from getting hurt. I’ve tried to ride the spur board more. It (the next month) is so big. If I can have some luck at these next three – The American, RodeoHouston and Kissimmee – it’d be so good for me. I’m so happy with the start of the year. I had a great circuit finals (RAMBadlands Circuit Finals Rodeo) and a great early fall. It’s awesome. Usually I’m at the bottom, it’s kind of nice to be up toward the top.

Meged is balancing a full-time PRCA career while competing in his first year at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, as a junior. Meged has lofty expectations for his rookie season and college campaign.

You competed on your PRCA permit for two years. What is your plan since you bought your PRCA card in September? Haven: My plan is to try and win Rookie of the Year and qualify for the NFR. I’m going to go full time and see what I can do. Where did you attend college before Tarleton State?

Haven: I went to Western Oklahoma State in Altus my first two years. I graduated with an associate’s degree in animal science. I qualified for the College Nationals Finals Rodeo in Casper (Wyo.) and finished 10th overall in (tie- down) roping. I also team rope as a header and steer wrestle in college rodeos. My main event is tie-down roping, and I would like to win the College National Finals Rodeo this year.

How wild has it been for you competing at the 2019 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo? Haven: It has been crazy. I have been drawing good and my horse has been good. It has just been going great. (In Bracket 3, he won the first round in 8.8 seconds, split the win in Round 2 with 11-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Matt Shiozawa in 8.5 seconds and was third in the third round in 8.1 seconds.) What is the atmosphere like at the 2019 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo? Haven: It’s pretty cool. It’s huge. I’ve never roped at a place like this (the AT&T Center) before. Everybody starts at zero, so I just do what I know how to do. Who is your main horse this season? Haven: I have a horse that’s a 10-year-old black gelding, his name is Jaysnic. I’ve had this horse since he was 6 years old, and I trained him. He has been really good, and he’s really been coming along. I was surprised he did as well as he did in San Antonio. I also have a second horse, Beyoncé, that is 9. How did you get started in rodeo? Haven: I really didn’t get involved with rodeo until I was in eighth grade. I bought a horse my eighth-grade year and I started (tie-down roping). I didn’t have any family involved with rodeo. My dad (Bart) showed cattle, and there were people in town who roped and that’s how I got into it. I also wrestled and played basketball growing up, but I stopped doing those things when I was a sophomore in high school. Do you have any brothers or sisters? Haven: I’m the oldest. Then I have a brother, Hayes, 19; sister, Harley, 15; and my youngest brother, Holden, 13. Hayes plays (defensive line) for Dickinson State (N.D.) University’s football team, and my sister and little brother rodeo. Who is your rodeo idol? Haven: Trevor Brazile. I have met him, and that was cool. He’s a very humble guy, and he takes care of business. Where’s the coolest place you are looking forward to going to on the PRCA trail? Haven: I’m really excited to go to Kissimmee, Fla., for the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo (March 21-24). I qualified by winning the year-end title in the Montana Circuit. I think we’re going to make a family vacation out of it. Who are you traveling with? Haven: Jake Pratt, Cody Craig and Cimarron Boardman. Those guys have helped me a bunch. Where is your favorite place to eat? Haven: That’s a good question. Anywhere that serves good steak. Texas Roadhouse or the Montana Club, restaurants like that. I get medium-rare ribeye.

When you are not rodeoing what do you enjoy doing? Haven: I enjoy being on my family’s ranch and checking cattle. What is your favorite movie? Haven: The Cowboys with John Wayne. I’ve liked watching that movie since I was a little kid.

What TV show do you binge watch? Haven: Longmire (based on the Walt Longmire mystery novels by best-selling author Craig Johnson). What is the coolest concert you have been to?

Haven: (Country singer) Jon Pardi. I saw him (Feb. 19) in San Antonio. It was a cool show. I’ve been to like two concerts in my life, and nothing as big as his concert was. What is your favorite (non-alcoholic) drink and candy? Haven: Sprite and Peanut M&M’s. Who is your favorite sports team? Haven: It would be in college football and it would be the Oregon Ducks.

R OUND THE SHORT NFR veteran injured Bull rider Tim Bingham out with neck injury Bull rider Tim Bingham, a three-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (2014, 2016-17), injured his neck following his 84.5-point ride on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Twizzler at La Fiesta de los Vaqueros in Tucson, Ariz., Feb. 17. “I had neck surgery (at Banner – University Medical Center in Tucson, Feb. 18), and I feel a lot better,” said Bingham, 27. “They fused the C4 and C5 vertebrae together. I got bucked off right at eight seconds. I came out the back a little bit and I got flipped upside down. I landed right on my head and my neck kind of folded. I didn’t lose any mobility. I got up and ran to the chutes and jumped up over the top of the chutes and sat down on the back for a minute, and I knew instantly something was wrong.” Bingham wasn’t sure how long he would be sidelined, but he expects to be out about six months. He was riding Twizzler for the first time.

The number of 93-point bareback rides Clayton Biglow has had since Dec. 10, 2018. The Clements, Calif., cowboy had an arena record 93-point ride on C5 Rodeo’s Virgil to win Round 5 at the 2018 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Dec. 10. Then on Feb. 16, Biglow had another 93-point ride – this time on Pickett Pro Rodeo’s Top Notch – to win the San Angelo (Texas) CINCH Chute-Out Rodeo. The number of rodeo records broken or tied at the San Angelo (Texas) Rodeo on Feb. 15. Bareback rider Caleb Bennett broke the single- ride record with a 93-point ride on Northcott Macza’s Spilled Perfume. The record was 91.5 points by Chad Rutherford in 2017. Bennett also broke the two-head average record at the rodeo with 178.5 points. The previ- ous record was 177.5 points set by Jake Vold in 2016. Tie-down roper Michael Otero won the average with a rodeo-record, 23.0-second time on three head. The previous three-head tie-down roping average record was 23.5 seconds, set by Timber Moore in 2014. Rusty Wright tied the two-head saddle bronc riding average rodeo record with 177 points. Wright shares the record with Wade Sundell, who set the mark in 2015. The approximate number of dump- truck loads of dirt for NRG Arena and the service level at NRG Stadium for RodeoHouston, according to multiple media reports. The rodeo is Feb. 25-March 8 and March 10-16.

Bingham has experience with neck injuries. “I was at an amateur rodeo in Island Park,

Idaho, when I was 17 and I broke my neck,” he said. “That time, I got thrown up quite a bit higher, and I came down on my head and broke my C6 (vertebrae). The first time I broke my neck I didn’t have surgery and was out six months.” Bingham spent the offseason recovering from a shattered right collarbone suffered in September at the Justin Finale in Puyallup, Wash. “That collarbone injury kept me out until Jan. 23 when I competed at the Division 1 Xtreme Bulls in Fort Worth,” Bingham said. “Now, it is just a matter of getting better, so I can get back out there.” Bingham finished a career-best seventh in the world standings in 2014.

Rodeo Corpus Christi lineup announced announced its Rodeo Corpus Christi (Texas) Concert Series lineup. Each of the four Rodeo Corpus Christi performances will feature national recording artists April 25-28. The 2019 Lineup is: Lee Brice (April 25), Pat Green (April 26), Eli Young Band (April 27) and Ramon Ayala y sus Bravos del Norte (April 28). Scooters from Scooter program underway Scooter, who won the last two PRCA | AQHA Horse of the Year honors for steer wrestling, finished his 2018 PRCA season by helping guide Tyler Waguespack to the world championship. Scooter’s owners Tyler Pearson and Kyle Irwin finished sixth and 12th, respectively, in the 2018 PRCA | RAM World Standings. “Scooter had an amazing year,” Pearson said in a press release. “He has blessed Kyle and I more than we could ever imagine. We wanted to pay it forward. We decided to donate Scooter’s $5,000 Horse of the Year check (in 2018). Then we chal- lenged our sponsors as well and have raised $19,500 to donate to Watering Seeds Organization.” Watering Seeds Organization creates rehabilitation and wellness opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Clown of Year Justin Rumford undergoes knee surgery Justin Rumford, the PRCA Clown of the Year every year since 2012, is sidelined after having left knee surgery. The surgery was performed by Dr. Chris Miller in Wichita, Kan., Feb. 7. Rumford is planning to return to the arena for Rodeo Austin (Texas), which begins March 16. Rumford, who also won the Coors Man in the Can award in 2013, 2015 and 2018, injured the knee Jan. 26 while performing at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver. He went on to perform at Rodeo Rapid City, Jan. 25 through Feb. 2. “I had an MRI, and when I got home from Rapid City (S.D.)

my orthopedic surgeon (Miller) looked at the MRI and said we have to fix this right away because if we wait until the fall there will be nothing left to fix,” Rumford said. “I blew my whole left knee out, the ACL, MCL and meniscus. At Denver, I was doing a new clown act with a miniature fighting bull. I jumped him, and I was fighting him, and I was making some rounds. I went to throw a back fake and when I did I stepped in a hole (in the arena dirt at the Denver Coliseum). When I stepped in the hole, I hurt my knee.” Rumford, 38, said he will walk and talk and do his acts that don’t involve jumping at Rodeo Austin. “I just will not be able to work the barrel for a while,” he said. “I still have a lot of acts I can do without having to run. I’m pretty much going to do everything I usually do except work the barrel. I think by mid-April I should be back to my old self. They said the surgery was really good. I have been going to therapy, and I have a great team behind me. My physical therapist is amazed at how strong my legs are and how much stuff I have already been able to do. I plan on clowning for a long time. I’m going to come back stronger than ever.” Rumford said he blew out his right knee steer wrestling at the Greeley (Colo.) Stampede in 2004.
