DIRECTOR’S CUT SCOTT KANIEWSKI

September shaping up to be tasty month of rodeos W e’re less than two months from the end of the 2020 regular season, but already September is shaping up to be like no other in recent ProRodeo memory. Normally, the final month is packed with system. This year, the RAMNCFR will have a total distribution of $500,000. And while earnings from the RAMNCFR don’t count toward the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings this season, that’s a lot of dough for those circuit competitors. The Xtreme Bulls Finale is going to give the top 40 bull

several significant rodeos – the Ellensburg (Wash.) Rodeo, Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up and the ProRodeo Tour Finale jump to mind – that play a key role in helping finalize qualifiers for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. While Pendleton and Ellensburg aren’t happening this season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ProRodeo Tour Finale still is. And the Xtreme Bulls Tour Finale, which is annually held in Ellensburg, has been moved to Nephi, Utah. Throw in the RAMNational Circuit Finals Rodeo in Greeley, Colo., and September is looking like one of the busiest and most exciting months of the season. Recent announcements about the Tour Finale moving from Puyallup, Wash., to Rapid City, S.D., the Xtreme Bulls moving to Nephi and the RAMNCFR moving to Greeley make for an exciting finish to the season. Greeley hosting the circuit finals is going to give plenty of cowboys the chance to compete at their first RAMNCFR. Qualifiers from the Maple Leaf Circuit, which became a circuit in 2019, also will have the first chance to represent Canada as a circuit. It will also guarantee that cowboys who mostly stick to their circuits because of preference, careers, family or other commitments get to compete at the biggest rodeo in the circuit

riders on the Xtreme Bulls Tour the chance to battle for a payout of $60,000 and the Tour crown. The winner could go from well outside the Top 15 to making the Wrangler NFR. Throw in ground money and fans at Nephi could get the chance to see some significant movement in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. And lastly, and possibly most importantly, the Tour Finale, usually held in early September, will now be one of the biggest rodeos in the regular season’s final month and will be on the final weekend of the regular season – Sept. 22-26. That means that the Top 24 competitors in the ProRodeo Tour Standings will be battling for significant money on the final weekend while trying to make the Wrangler NFR. Over the last couple years, the ProRodeo Tour has been a key element in determining Finals qualifiers. This year that’ll be true again. While the Tour schedule has changed this season because of the pandemic, competitors have still been sure to get to Tour rodeos, and earning points at those will pay dividends to getting into the Tour Finale. In turn, the Tour Finale also will pay dividends for some cowboys when Sept. 30 rolls around and they see they’ve locked up a spot to compete under the bright lights of Las Vegas. That’s a heck of a climactic finish to the regular season.

Change for a Dollar?

“It’s going to come down to the wire. I think it’ll be 64 cents separating some people. In the timed events it’s always really tight and dollar for dollar, but usually ours (roughstock) is more spread out, but I think it’ll be tight in every event.” – ISAAC DIAZ

Saddle bronc rider Isaac Diaz found himself 64 cents outside the Top 15 of the PRCA | RAM World Standings as of Aug. 4.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH AMBER BAILLIE

What has led to your success this season? Luke: My horse has been great this summer and I’ve been fortunate to run some good calves at some good rodeos. How long have you had your horse? Luke: I bought him in February. His name is Boon. What’s been your best rodeo so far? Luke: Spanish Fork, Utah (Spanish Fork Fiesta Days Rodeo, where Potter won $5,894 after placing in two rounds and tying for second in the average with Bo Pickett.) What would you like to achieve by the end of the season? Luke: To win Rookie of the Year and set myself up well for next year. How did you get into tie-down roping? Luke: My dad roped calves and steers. My family got a ranch, and that’s where I learned how to do it. I think the first calf I tied down I was 5, maybe 7 years old. What’s the most challenging aspect about the event? After purchasing his PRCA card this season and rodeoing full-time, tie-down roper Luke Potter is living out his childhood dream — building a career in ProRodeo. In 2019, the Maple City, Kan., cowboy finished as the year- end tie-down roping champion in the Prairie Circuit. As of Aug. 4, the 21-year-old was second in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings, $2,420 behind leader Kincade Henry.

LUKE POTTER

Luke: The hardest part about it is that you go to so many rodeos throughout the year and sometimes you get in dry spells. You have to remember that you know how to do it. With the ups and downs of being gone and rodeoing for a whole year, just knowing when it’s bad it can go equally as good, and keeping a level-mind about it, not staying down in the dumps. Do you research the calves you draw? Luke: We try and keep a pretty good list on the calves. We’ll get around the people who’ve roped them before and ask, or call guys we’ve watched rope them before. What do you enjoy most about tie-down roping? Luke: I like that I get to do what I love every day. I’ve been working toward that goal since I was 12. Did your dad compete in the PRCA? Luke: When my dad (Grady) roped calves, he stayed more in the circuit, he didn’t really go out and rodeo too much. When he roped steers, he won the Prairie Circuit in 2006. He got close to making the steer roping finals a few times. What’s your favorite way to get exercise? Luke: I like staying active, doing things outside and being on a horse. I try to rope every day. Those are ways that keep me in shape. If you weren’t a ProRodeo cowboy what would you be?

Luke: Just a regular cowboy. I’d be a working cowboy, helping out with what I could. I love everything about the ranch, anything from working cattle to checking cattle. I don’t like when it’s cold and miserable and you have to break ice. What’s one thing that can instantly make your day better? Luke: A call from family. When I’m gone, I love to hear from them. What is your favorite beverage? Luke: Sweet tea or Dr Pepper. What phone app do you use the most? Luke: Snapchat or Netflix. What’s your most prized possession? Luke: The relationships that I have with my family, with my dad and grandpa especially. I wouldn’t trade that for anything. Who do you look up to in rodeo? Luke: Inside the arena there is nobody who has ever roped better than Cody Ohl, in my opinion. What is your favorite movie? Luke: Lonesome Dove and Tombstone . What do you enjoy on the road? Luke: I like to listen to Prime Country on Sirius XM, and I like a good coffee while I’m driving. I’ll get into some 80’s rock later in the day.

SHORT ROUND

T he RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, one of the biggest rodeos of the ProRodeo season and one that will have a total distribution of $500,000, will take place in Greeley, Colo., in September. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the RAM NCFR, originally scheduled to take place in Kissimmee, Fla., in April, will instead move to Greeley for the 2020 season and is scheduled for Sept. 10-13. The RAM NCFR is the most prestigious rodeo under the PRCA circuit system and will crown the circuit champions. The RAM NCFR is also one of the highest-paying events in ProRodeo. While the Greeley Stampede was canceled this season, hosting the RAM NCFR in September will have a substantial economic impact. “The Greeley Stampede is thrilled to host the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo,” said Chad P. Sanger, Chair of the Greeley Stampede. “We will take strict precautions to offer the event as safely as possible while bringing an economic benefit to our city.” The RAM NCFR will feature contestants from each of the 12 U.S. circuits plus Canada and Mexico, bringing more than 200 contestants to Island Grove Regional Park for five competition RAM NCFR moves to Greeley for 2020 Relocated

rounds over the four days. The event will culminate with a semifinals and finals on Sunday, Sept. 13, when the national circuit champions will be crowned. The RAM NCFR will return to Kissimmee in 2021. It is scheduled for April 9-11 and will again be a key ingredient for cowboys shooting to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. “We were disappointed that issues related to COVID-19 prohibited Osceola County from hosting the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo this year,” Osceola County Chairwoman Viviana Janer said. “We’re glad to see the circuit finals will take place in Greeley, and plans are already in process to again host this fantastic event in 2021.”

Nephi to host Xtreme Bulls Tour Finale, Sept. 19

The event will take place Saturday, Sept. 19. “Thank you to the committee at Nephi
