IN HIS OWNWORDS: TRENT CREAGER RECENTLY MARRIED, CREAGER FOCUSES ON RODEO

I got married June 2 to Callie Gray. She’s fromCanada and we got married in Erin, Ontario, about 45 minutes fromToronto. It’s really pretty up there. It was a big ceremony. We were supposed to have between 250 and 300 people attending. I don’t think they’ve had any other weddings lately that have had any more fun than ours did. It was a pretty big deal. Of course, a lot of my groomsmen were rodeo guys – Timber Moore, Clint Cooper, Tyler Milligan. We had a big time. The ceremony was at my in-laws’ house. They took care of everything. Callie and I just had fun. Callie and I are waiting until the rodeo season slows down to go on our honeymoon. We’re going to Hawaii. Until then, I’m going to try and make the Finals. Obviously, I wish I was higher than 35th in the world standings. It’s OK, it could be worse. Right now, is the time that counts. We go to Prescott, Ariz., (World’s Oldest Rodeo, June 29). Then we’re off to the Greeley (Colo.) Stampede, the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede, the Livingston (Mont.) Roundup, Red Lodge, Mont., (Home of Champions Rodeo) and St. Paul (Ore.) Rodeo. When I was younger I liked this time of year a lot more. I wasn’t out here checks at six rodeos during May and June (with the last weekend of June left to go). As of June 25, he had earned $18,125 to put him in 35th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings. Last year, he finished with $20,001 in earnings. His one trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo came in 2010. Tie-down roper Trent Creager has been on a roll for cashing checks recently. The 38-year-old, Oklahoma cowboy pocketed

the last couple of years because I didn’t have a horse. I’m excited to be out here now that I have a couple of good horses. I was looking for one the last couple years, but ones that are ready for out here are really hard to find. Tyler has two really good horses we’ve been riding (Big Time and Propane). I also have a good horse I leased from a guy in Oklahoma. That horse is Ranch Hand, he’s 14. He doesn’t have any cheat, he’s just real honest. Everybody who rides Big Time has to rank him among their favorites. He’s probably among the top five going right now. He scores really well and stops really hard. Two or three guys can ride him and it doesn’t matter to him. I grew up around rodeo. When I was 15, on Easter Sunday, after dinner my family would rope. We went out, and I had just gotten old enough that I could rope pretty good, and as far as tying down, I had gotten big enough. Then I broke my leg. I was completely out of everything for a year and a half because it was a really bad break. So, I went on the rodeo trail a lot with my grandfather, TomCreager. He was retired, so I went with him all the time. He went to rodeos during the week and on weekends. We bought a house and 32 acres, but there was no fence or barn on the property. When I’m not rodeoing I’m building the fence, arenas, barns. Now, it’s just a couple hundred feet to the arena for me. I also like to golf and go to Oklahoma State University football games. I graduated fromOSU with a marketing degree. We used to have season seats but let them go a couple years ago because we would miss the first few home games in September because of rodeo. Now, we can spend less money and buy better seats.

GRILLE COWBOY

For Canadian cowboy DAWSON HAY, saddle bronc riding is a family affair, learning rodeo’s classic event from his father Rod Hay, a 20-time Wrangler NFR qualifier and 2007 NFR average winner in saddle bronc riding. As of June 25, the 19-year-old fromWildwood, Alberta, topped the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings and could be on his way to winning Saddle Bronc Riding Rookie of the Year, just as his dad did in 1989.

WITH AMBE BAILLIE PSN

How old were you when you first tried saddle bronc riding? Dawson: I was 15. I didn’t start competing at rodeos until I was 16 or 17. Last year was the hardest I rodeoed, competing on my permit. Before, I was just doing amateur bronc riding. What’s the most challenging aspect of the sport? Dawson: Keeping my head on straight. There’s a lot of mental prep because it’s hard to think when you’re out in the arena, you’ve got to think before you get on. You’ve got to keep your confidence up and stay in shape to be competitive, and that’s not always easy when you’re on the road all the time and not getting the best sleep. What do you do to improve in your event?

Dawson: I like to get on practice horses when I’m not doing as well as I want to be. My dad raises bucking horses; I like to come home and practice on them, get away from the rodeo and just go back to the basics. What’s been your best PRCA rodeo? Dawson: I had a rough start to the season, I wasn’t riding well, but then I competed at (Rodeo) Austin and that broke the ice. Things have turned around since. It’s been my top rodeo so far. What role has your dad (pictured left) played in your career? Dawson: A huge role, as a role model and coach. Clear back to the first horse I got on, he set up my saddle and has helped me, watching my performances and breaking it down from his point of view. It’s incredible to have a coach like my dad because he’s been there, done that. It’s cool to be competing in the same association he did. What do you admire most about your dad? Dawson: As stubborn as he is, that’s why he’s been successful. He doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer and is a go-getter. He dedicated a lot of work and time to bronc riding to be the best bronc rider that he could. When my brother and I were young, we’d get to pick certain weekends to go with him. Watching rodeo since I was in diapers, I’ve always dreamed of making it in professional rodeo. It’s a cool lifestyle and has always been my goal.

How do you prepare for competition? Dawson: I watch bronc riding videos while on the road and have NFR tapes from 1989-2010 that showcase guys like Billy Etbauer and Dan Mortensen. I like to watch them and study the art of saddle bronc riding. Those guys had cool riding styles; I like to pinpoint how they did certain things and try to work some of it into my own riding. Does your brother compete?

Dawson: Yes. Logan (age 21) is on his permit. He’s ridden broncs for as long as I have but has experienced some tough injuries and needed to take more time off. He’s stayed healthy since his last injury and been placing at a lot of Canadian rodeos. I imagine next year he’ll start his rookie year and we’ll be competing at similar rodeos.

When you’re not competing, what do you like to do for fun? Dawson: I like to go snowboarding. Living in Canada, we get quite a bit of snow in the winter. My family takes a lot of ski trips because we live close to ski hills. I also enjoy playing golf, even though I’m not very good at it. Do you have a favorite saying or quote? Dawson: If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much space. Do you typically research the bronc you’ve drawn? Dawson: Absolutely. I research stock stats and have learned more about certain horses by quizzing experienced contestants like Layton Green, Colt Gordon and Zeke Thurston.

Do you have a favorite bronc? Dawson: I was able to ride (Flying 5 Rodeo’s) Sundance at the Reno (Rodeo), which was really cool because my dad rode him during his career. I didn’t score, but he was a fun horse to get on and I would like to ride him again. How do you balance rodeo and a personal life? Dawson: It seems rodeo is my personal life. When I’m not rodeoing, I’m at home trying to heal up and get back on the road. I look forward to traveling with friends and being able to ride with top contestants like Isaac Diaz and Taos Muncy, who I’ve watched since I was little and have looked up to.

A Pioneer Member No. 14: Richmond competed until age 84

G eorge Richmond was one of the first cowboys to join the Rodeo Cowboys Association, but he was far from be- ing one of the first to retire. The Idaho cowboy, born Feb. 6, 1920, was member No. 14 and continued to compete until the age of 84, when at the 2004 Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up he finished fourth in the Gold Card Steer Roping. Richmond’s first PRCA competition was at Belle Fourche, S.D., in 1942. Not even World War II could stop him from competing in all the timed events while he served at Fort Robinson (Neb.) for three years as a U.S. Army corporal. “The cavalry was disbanded when World War II started, and they shipped most of the horses there

• Red Lodge, Mont. – Tie-down roping (1946 and ’57- 58) • Puyallup, Wash. – Tie-down roping (1954 and ’57) • Deadwood, S.D. – Tie-down roping (1955) • Hayward, Calif. – Team roping with Earl Morgan (1957) • Walla Walla, Wash. – Steer roping (1985) Richmond was 65 years old when he won steer roping titles in Moses Lake, Wash., and Walla Walla, Wash., while earning a check at the Pendleton Round-Up on his way to becoming the 1985 Dodge Columbia River Circuit year-end champion. He qualified for the Dodge Columbia River Circuit Finals Rodeo for the last time in 1991. “I beat all the young guys, which was kind of like, I say an ego-satisfying thing,” Richmond told PSN in 1996. When his career as a full-time cowboy ended around

to Fort Robinson, and we took care of them,” Richmond told ProRodeo Sports News in 1996. “I had a very understanding commanding officer. I built a calf roping arena right there on the post and used an Army horse to rope from.” He used that same Army horse the first time he competed at Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days. From 1943 through 1999, Richmond competed in nearly every steer roping event at Cheyenne. He started going to Pendleton in 1947 and stood fourth in a field of 68 after the first day of steer roping in 1991. Over the years, Richmond left his mark at many of the biggest rodeos in the country, including wins at: • Belle Fourche, S.D. – Bull riding (1945) • Ellensburg, Wash. – All-around and tie-down roping (1946)

1960, Richmond and his wife, Alberta, moved from Park City, Mont., and bought a cattle ranch in Hayden Lake, Idaho. Over the years, he also owned a real estate business, worked as a rodeo announcer and ran a tie-down roping school, where one of his students was future 1975 World Champion Tie-Down Roper Jeff Copenhaver. Richmond went on to be inducted into the Pendleton Round-Up Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Montana ProRodeo Hall and Wall of Fame. He and Alberta had two sons, Dave and Lee, and two daughters, JoAnne and Jeanne, and 10 grandchildren. Lee and Dave were also PRCA competitors – Lee was the 1987 Dodge Columbia River Circuit year-end steer roping champion. Richmond’s wife preceded him in death on Feb. 24, 2013. He died May 2, 2013, at 93 years old.

Saddle bronc rider Heith DeMoss, a nine-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, will be sidelined until at least December after having left shoulder surgery June 26. DeMoss, who qualified for the Wrangler NFR in 2007, 2009-11 and 2013-17, was injured right before the whistle on Flying U Rodeo’s Red Smoke, June 20, at the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo. He didn’t register a score on the ride. NFR regular out of action Heith DeMoss sidelined with shoulder injury

DeMoss did have a 74-point ride on Big Bend Rodeo’s Owyhee Break at Reno one night later, but following that ride he realized his injury was something that needed to be repaired. “This is unbelievably frustrating,” DeMoss said. He dislocated his left (free) arm, tearing the labrum and breaking a piece of bone where his bicep ties into. During the surgery, a screw was inserted into the bone and the labrum was repaired. DeMoss had his surgery done by Dr. R. Pepper Murray at Mountain West Surgical Center in Bountiful, Utah. DeMoss won the three previous Reno Rodeos – 2015-17. DeMoss was 25th in the June 25 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $20,898. “Now, I’m strictly following the doctor’s orders,”

said DeMoss, 33. “I’m in a sling for four weeks and then I will attack the physical therapy. I’m going to do all I can to be ready to go for sure by January.” DeMoss, who resides in Heflin, La.,

finished a career-best fourth in the 2014 world standings. He has earned more than $1.2 million in his career.
