IN HIS OWNWORDS: TYLERWORLEY ROPER OFF TO FAST START AT HOUSTON

A fter the first round in Houston, we knew we had made it back. After that it was like, OK, we can take a deep breath and know that now we are just trying to make money. The third round – after we had won the first two – we had a steer that popped really fast, and I thought, I have to try to heel him before he gets to running fast across the arena. It was like, man, if I catch him great, if not, I’ll be mad at myself, but still it’s not going to ruin my day, we’re OK. But then when we finished in the third round, Matt smiled, it was kind of funny, like, are you kidding me, this is crazy. It’s a huge blessing, because $9,000 is always awesome to win. To win that much money is crazy. We’ve had a rough go this year. ... To finally go and capitalize on three in a row, I felt like it’s a huge blessing. I’ve never made the National Finals before, and that’s my goal. Matt’s won the world title twice, so to him, I’m sure he’s used to having a good winter. To me it’s awesome. I’ve never had a winter this good. To have about $17,000 feels As of March 6, team roping heeler Tyler Worley was 39th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $8,446. The 25-year-old from Berryville, Ark., will take a big leap once RodeoHouston concludes March 16. That’s because Worley and heading partner Matt Sherwood, a 49-year-old, two- time gold buckle winner, won all three rounds of the Super Series III, earning $9,000 each. Last year, Worley finished 27th in the heeling standings with $51,742, a season that started inauspiciously and ended with him winning the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up and narrowly missing qualifying for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

really good. It feels like we’re on track to win some and to give ourselves a chance to make the Finals. Honestly, roping with someone like Matt takes a lot of pressure off me because I know he’s going to do his job, and I know he’s going to do the best he can. He puts so much stock in trying to make it easy on me that it makes my job easier. I know he’s doing everything he can to make it easier for me to catch. If I do miss, he takes it upon himself, like, hey, I could’ve done better, don’t worry about it. My wife, Brittany, and I got married last May, almost a year ago. She is (ProRodeo Hall of Famer) Bobby Hurley’s daughter. She was a registered nurse. We were going to move fromArkansas to Stephenville, Texas, (where they live now). Last summer, I told her, why don’t you quit early before we move and you could come with me the rest of the summer. She thought I was crazy at first. So, I talked her into quitting her job and she hasn’t started back to work yet. It’s been awesome. She takes great care of the horses, probably better than I do. Talking to Bobby, he has confidence that I’m going to be OK and this is my livelihood. He’s supportive of it, and that’s awesome. He helps me understand the mindset. My mom and dad are really supportive of me, my whole family is. When I roped with (ProRodeo Hall of Famer and seven-time world champion team roper) Jake Barnes – and I still think it’s cool I have his number in my phone – he told me one time, ‘You’re never going to get any better if you go home.’ So I told him, I’m not going to go home, no matter what. I’m going to stay out there, and I’ll figure it out.

GRILLE COWBOY

COLE PATTERSON, a 23-year-old from Pratt, Kan., is embarking on his PRCA rookie season as a steer roper. He’s leading the March 6 PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings in steer roping with $5,551. If his last name sounds familiar in steer roping circles it should. He is the oldest son of four-time World Champion Steer Roper Rocky Patterson. Cole is hoping to qualify for the ClemMcSpadden National Finals Steer Roping and to compete there with his father.

WITH TRACY RENCK PSN

What was your progression like to get to this point in your career? Cole: I was on my (PRCA) permit and I (tie-down roped) for maybe three years. Then I steer roped on my permit last year. I was just waiting to get out of college before I bought my PRCA card. I’m going to try and rodeo full time this year. I think steer roping is probably the most intricate in rodeo and probably the most difficult to master. There are just so many moving parts and so much trust between a guy and his horse that he has to have in order to leave his horse going a different direction than he’s going. Where did you go to college?

Cole: I went to Western Oklahoma State College in Altus for two years and then transferred to Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva for my final two years. I got an associate degree in agriculture and associate in business at Western Oklahoma. At Northwestern, I got a bachelor’s degree in ag business in May 2018. I team roped as a header and heeler and (tie-down roped) in college. Your father is a steer roping legend. Did you always want to follow in his footsteps? Cole: I think I was 14 or 15 when Dad let me tie my first steer, and he only let me tie about two or three. Then, he told me that was all I could tie until I graduated from college. I think he wanted me to get a taste of it until I was hooked, and then I would work that much harder to get a degree. My dad knows so much about horsemanship and the technicalities of steer roping, and I hope one day I know half as much about steer roping as he does. What horses are you using this year?

Cole: I had two calf horses, and one of them was big enough to rope steers off. I remember last May we put them both in the fire at the same time. The one my dad bought from Nebraska I just call my Dun horse. The other horse is named Convict, my dad bought him when he was 2. He told me he was going to start steer roping on him when he turned 4, and I liked him so much that when he turned 3, I started (tie-down roping) on him so maybe dad wouldn’t take him from me. He turned out to be a good-enough calf horse that dad would never take him away from me, and now that I quit (tie-down roping) I need him for steer roping. What has been your biggest win this year?

Cole: I won the average in Rosenberg, Texas (at the Fort Bend County Fair & Rodeo, Oct. 5-7, earning $2,846). I set out with the goal that I wanted to win the average somewhere my rookie year, and it happened to be the first rodeo I went to. What are your goals for this season? Cole: The ultimate goal is to make the National Finals Steer Roping. If I could rope with my dad there, it would be a dream come true. When I started steer roping, one thing I wanted to accomplish is to rope with Dad at the NFSR one time. That would be super cool. Who are your favorite non-rodeo athletes? Cole: Tom Brady in football and LeBron James in basketball. I think it is cool to watch guys have long careers where they are so dominant.

What’s your favorite movie? Cole: Tombstone . I think it would have been cool to have lived back in those times.

What’s your favorite restaurant? Cole: Texas Roadhouse. I either get a ribeye or a filet. What’s your favorite type of candy and beverage to drink? Cole: I’m a sucker for a Snickers bar. I also like to drink Pepsi.

What rodeo are you looking forward to steer roping at? Cole: I’ve been looking forward to running one at Cheyenne (Wyo.) for as long as I can remember. The long start and the fresh cattle and the history of the rodeo is something I’ve been waiting to be a part of. What’s the last music concert you attended?

Cole: I saw George Strait last December in Las Vegas during the Wrangler NFR. That’s the first time I saw George Strait, and his concert is pretty hard to beat.

R OUND THE SHORT NFR rider passes away Merle Temple qualified for the NFR five times Bareback rider Merle Temple, a five-time qualifier for the National Finals Rodeo, passed away Feb. 26 from cancer. He was 57. Temple qualified for the NFR in 1987-89 and 1991-92. His career-best finish in the world standings was seventh in 1988. Temple grew up in Rocky Ford, S.D., and won the Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo in 1987 and 1993 and was the circuit’s year-end champion in ’93. Temple also was a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. He was a two-time World Indian Bareback Riding Champion. “Rodeo is meeting people, traveling coast to coast, competing and being up or being down,” Temple said in the 1993 PRCA media guide. “What a way to mature.” Ken Lensegrav, a 10-time qualifier for the NFR (1988-97), spoke fondly of his brother-in-law. “He was a character and you never had to wonder what he was thinking,” Lensegrav said. “He would let you know, he was a no-holds barred kind of guy. He went at things hard, and he was a heck of a bareback rider. I’ve known a lot of tough people in my career, and he’s right at the top of the heap. The great thing about Merle is he was a rodeo cowboy, but his first love was being a rancher and a ranch cowboy at heart. He broke and trained scores of horses from the time he was 9 years old. “I want people to remember Merle as a cowboy’s cowboy. He was tough as nails, and he loved everything about the cowboy and ranching lifestyle. The first thing he did every morning was pull on his boots and put his hat on to face the day.” Temple was living in Rocky Ford on his family ranch. He was third generation on the cattle ranch. “He had a herd of saddle horses that he broke and trained that he was very proud of,” Lensegrav said. “He worked all his life to put together this herd, and they are as nice a bunch of ranch horses that you will find anywhere.” A visitation and prayer service took place March 3 at Behrens Wilson Funeral Home in Rapid City, S.D. The funeral was March 4 at Rocky Ford School. Temple is survived by his son, A.J., 8; sisters, Kim (Ken) Lensegrav, and Jennifer; and younger brother, Curtis. PRCA ProRodeo file photo learned to ride bucking horses as a boy. He and his father, Doug, had an arena with bucking chutes on the ranch. Merle and his younger brother, Curtis, started breaking colts before they were 10. Temple competed on his PRCA permit in 1981 and bought his PRCA card in December 1982. He earned $230,593 in his career. Temple

Keylon recovering from injuries Bareback rider Jared Keylon is on the road to recovery after suffering multiple injuries during a semifinal ride at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, Feb. 22. Just before the 8-second whistle, Keylon got hung up while riding Powder River Rodeo’s Knot So Foxy, and things went from bad to worse. “That’s the first time I had been on that horse,” Keylon, 34, said recently. “That horse was phenomenal. I was getting ready to fold up, and it was just a regular everyday thing. Usually you don’t just try and double grab to get off them, you try to pick your spot. I was getting ready to get off, and just as I balled up, she slung me over her head. My face hit my rigging and busted three of my teeth loose, and my free (left) arm came down on my rigging handle at the same time and broke my arm where it meets at the shoulder.” While Keylon was on the ground at the AT&T Center, the horse magnified the cowboy’s injuries. “When she came down, she stomped me in the ribs and broke five ribs on my right side,” said Keylon, who received no score on the ride. “That in turn caused a small puncture in my lung, which caused half of my lung to collapse. It also lacerated my liver and my kidney. They got the internal bleeding on the liver and kidney to stop, and they have been draining the blood out of my lungs.” Keylon was released from the hospital March 1. Keylon was having a strong season, as he was ninth in the March 6 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $25,223. In 2012, Keylon made his lone appearance at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, finishing 15th in the world standings with $54,478. Keylon expects to be side- lined for three months.

8 Seconds star Luke Perry passes Luke Perry was never a member of the PRCA, but he did have quite an impact on the sport of rodeo through the movie 8 Seconds . Perry, who portrayed the late 1987 PRCA World Champion Bull Rider Lane Frost in the movie that debuted Feb. 25, 1994, passed away March 4 because of compli- cations from a stroke. He was 52.

What’s more, in countless bios on the PRCA’s website – prorodeo.com – numerous cowboys were inspired to rodeo after watching 8 Seconds . Frost passed away July 30, 1989, at Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days. He was 25. Frost was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1990.

TOPS AT SAN ANTONIO — Feb. 7-23 BAREBACK RIDING BY MATT NABER R eigning World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider Wade Sundell may have experienced déjà vu on Feb. 23. The Iowa cowboy won the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo for the second time since 2014 thanks to four-time horse of the year Frontier Rodeo’s Medicine Woman – a bronc he’s now ridden five times. Medicine Woman and Sundell combined for rides in the upper-80s in the past, as well as a 92-point ride at the 2014 Dodge City (Kan.) Roundup Rodeo. His 2014 hot streak of winning San Antonio and Dodge City culminated with a third-place finish in the world standings with $180,726. When the 34-year-old gets on a roll, the wins keep coming, and his hot streak continued in south Texas, just like it did five years ago. The final round at the ProRodeo Tour stop presented a twist, as Déjà vu Sundell wins San Antonio for second time since 2014
