IN HIS OWN WORDS

BRIDGER CHAMBERS

Steer wrestler Chambers takes advantage in Wrangler NFR debut In his first trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, steer wrestler Bridger Chambers took second in the average and finished second in the PRCA | RAM World Standings. Chambers entered the Finals in eighth place in the world standings. He made $135,584 over the 10-day rodeo at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. Not bad for someone who before this season had never made more than $8,000 on the PRCA rodeo trail. Chambers, who turned 30 on Dec. 21, lives in Butte, Mont. Kissimmee, Fla., (where he won more than $17,000) was kind of the determining factor in trying to give it a shot to qualify for the Wrangler NFR. The family all had to have a sit-down discussion and figure out what that was going to look like. I had responsibilities with the job I do with my dad, so we were trying to figure that out. As far as the family being supportive, they were all on board. It was still tough, being away from them. The two little ones knew I was going rodeoing, but I

don’t think they understood what the end goal was. For the older ones, I think they understood it. Now, with going to the Finals, they see what can happen and why it’s worth it. I guess I didn’t feel many butterflies, not too nervous as far as hoping I didn’t screw up on that first run. I backed in the box and seemed calm until I nodded my head. Then, that’s when a wave of adrenaline came. I had to focus on just going to get to the horns. That was the biggest rush of emotions, that first time I cracked my head. When the average pays $67,000, you could win that in three rounds, and we had 10 of them to run at. That was our thing, to keep running at it and figure it out at the end of the week. Wherever you end up that’s where you’re at. Go at each one like it’s the last one. At the Finals, I rode Rusty, Dakota Eldridge’s horse. It was awesome. It was something where I only had to worry about myself because I knew he was going to do his job. He’d been there a bunch of times; a lot of people have been on him. I didn’t have to worry if he was going to run or work. It was back in the box and take care of my job. The plan is to go hard again. I’ve got the money saved up – I’ll use some to pay bills – and then try to do it again, because I can’t think of a better way to make money than to do something you love.

T he NFR is a long couple of weeks. My wife had to remind me my birthday was coming up. I hadn’t realized it. The entire NFR experience was amazing. My first trip down that tunnel was something I’ll never forget. Being able to ride out into the arena and seeing my family sitting in the stands every night was pretty cool. Every time I took a lap during the opening, my dad was standing up whipping his hat in a circle. It was hard to miss him. I would wave at him and my family. My wife, Kristen, and two younger kids, Crewe, 4, and Case, 3, were there every night. The two older kids, Maddie, 13, and Hudson, 11, came later because they were in school. Every time I rode out, I was sure to wave at them. This season was different. I think it just started with a different mind-set about this time last year, trying to get ready for everything. The way it turned out was never expected. I didn’t plan on going hard. But those things change. I don’t know that we did anything differently, but you have little goals and they help you reach those bigger ones. Coming in second at the RAMNational Circuit Finals Rodeo in

FINALS RECAP

BY PRCA STAFF T he 60th edition of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo proved to be historic. And not just because it marked 60 years of the Finals crowning world champions. Trevor Brazile won his PRCA-record 14th All-Around gold buckle, adding to his ever-growing record of PRCA world championships, this one No. 24, in front of 17,150 at theThomas &Mack Center in Las Vegas, Dec. 15. Meanwhile, Sage Kimzey became the first bull rider in the NFR era to win five consecutive world championships. ProRodeo Hall of Famer Jim Shoulders won six consecutive bull riding world titles, but only the last one occurred during the NFR. “Anytime your name is by Jim Shoulders’ you are in a league you can’t put into words,” said Kimzey, 24. “He is one of the greatest cowboys of all time and it means the world to me.” Kimzey’s fifth bull riding world title also puts him in precious company. Only four other bull riders have won at least five – Don Gay won eight, Shoulders seven, and Smokey Snyder and Harry Tompkins each won five. Only Kimzey has won world titles in his first five years as a professional. Kimzey was banged up throughout the Finals, and that reflected in the fact that he rode four bulls. But Kimzey saved the best for last. Hopping on Beutler and Son Rodeo’s Record Rack’s Shootin’ Stars, Kimzey posted a 93-point ride. “This year was tough, it was just sheer grit and determination from the start of the year,” he said. “It started with a fractured pelvis, and it was a 365-day grind. Going into here with a big lead, then getting hurt in the first round – it was a brutal 10 days and it was hard to get out of bed.” While Kimzey’s career continues to flourish, Brazile announced before the Finals started that the 2018 season marked the last time he would rodeo History Made Kimzey wins fifth straight bull riding title; Brazile wins 14th All-Around title

full time. Brazile is going to an abbreviated schedule in 2019 to spend more time with his family. Then he went out and won his 14th All-Around title, and he did it by winning Round 10 of the tie-down roping in 7.2 seconds. It was his 73rd career go-round win at the Wrangler NFR – in tie-down roping and team roping – and National Finals Steer Roping, yet another record. “When I came into Round 10, I was honestly so thankful that I had another chance,” Brazile said. “It wasn’t maybe the best chance. I had to win the round and do some certain things, but it was at least a chance, and as a competitor that’s all you can ask for.” Brazile entered Round 10 trailing his brother-in-law Tuf Cooper by a little more than $12,000. Cooper won the All- Around title in 2017. In bareback riding, two-time defending champion TimO’Connell came into the 2018Wrangler NFR with the slimmest margin in the world standings he’d had over the last three years. He saw that lead of $14,822 vanish by Round 7 of the Finals, with Caleb Bennett moving into first. But O’Connell wasn’t ready to relinquish his title of world champion. O’Connell split the aggregate with Steven Dent to propel the Zwingle, Iowa, cowboy to his third consecutive world championship with $319,801. “It’s surreal,” said O’Connell, who didn’t move into first

Tie-down roper Trevor Brazile won Round 10 with a 7.2-second time. The round victory helped him clinch his 14th all-around world championship and 24th PRCA world title – both PRCA records. PRCA ProRodeo photo by Billie-Jean Duff

place in the world standings until August. “It was a battle from Day 1. The season started slow, it picked up. It was a fight through the end of the season. It came down to me leaving it all on the line when it came down to the 10th round.” Only seven bareback riders have won four or more world championships. Team ropers Clay Smith and Paul Eaves went out together in the best way possible. The duo who decided before the Finals kicked off Dec. 6 to go their separate ways on the rodeo trail, put together a team roping championship run. Team roping header Smith and team roping heeler Eaves stopped the clock in 4.4 seconds in Round 10 to clinch third in the aggregate and win their respective world championships with $289,921 each. They cashed in for $174,577 apiece at the Finals. Their third-place aggregate finish was 34.5 seconds on eight head. “It’s everything we’ve worked for,” said Smith, 27. “It’s what we’ve wanted since we were young,” said Eaves, 28. “It’s unbelievable.” Steer wrestler Tyler Waguespack opened the 2018Wrangler NFR with a Round 1 victory. He closed it with a world title. The 28-year-old, Gonzales, La., cowboy claimed his second world championship in three years with $260,013. Waguespack spurred the victory with his aggregate win – 44.5 seconds on 10 head. He trailed regular-season leader Curtis Cassidy by $26,425 when the Finals opened. Waguespack won Rounds 1 and 8 and placed in five others. Over the 10 days, he won $180,429. After winning Round 9, Waguespack knew the world title was well within reach. “I knew after the ninth round if I could go in and win the average that the world title would take care of itself,” he said. For the second time in his career, tie-down roper Caleb Smidt is a world champion. The cowboy from Bellville, Texas, won the 2018 gold buckle with $232,817, capping it off by winning the average in 83.7 seconds on 10 head. The average win cashed for $67,269. Smidt’s previous world title (it also included the average title) came in 2015. His newest title is the one he’s most proud of. “This is awesome,” said Smidt, 29. “It has been a few years, but this one means a lot more to me than the first one.”

Smidt’s only round win of the 2018 Finals came in Round 1, but he placed in four other rounds. Wade Sundell, who qualified for the saddle bronc riding for the Finals every year between 2007 and 2015, finally had reason to celebrate in Las Vegas. Sundell won $177,327 at the 2018Wrangler NFR to propel him to his first gold buckle with $280,636. “Words can’t explain it, it’s amazing,” he said. “I’ve been trying to do it since the first time here, but I’m glad it came and hope there’s more to come.” Sundell focused on getting back to Las Vegas. He accomplished that, getting in with the eighth-most money won among saddle bronc riders. He trailed regular-season leader Jacobs Crawley by $64,792. But Sundell chipped away at the leaders. He just kept riding. He placed in the first three rounds, won Round 5, placed in Round 6, split the win in Round 7 and placed in the last two rounds. Sundell already has plans for the money he won. “Life will do that to you,” he said about his housefire this past summer. “But keep your chin up – there’s no sense in being a Sally. … (I will) rebuild the house.” With her first gold buckle already in hand after clinching in Round 9, barrel racer Hailey Kinsel won with a WPRA single-season record $350,700. “We had (the world championship) won, and I could have run (Sister) to try for that Top Gun deal, but she owes me nothing,” Kinsel said. “We accomplished our main goal, and we are getting ready for 2019.” Kinsel finished seventh in the aggregate, winning four rounds along the way. She may have clinched a night early, but she didn’t get her gold buckle officially until after Round 10. Bull rider Chase Dougherty had a fabulous Wrangler NFR debut. In addition to winning the bull riding average, the newcomer to the Finals won the RAMTop Gun Award, given to the competitor who wins the most money at the Finals in one event. Dougherty won $209,058 at the Finals. As the winner, Dougherty was awarded a 2019 RAM 3500 Heavy Duty Truck. He also received a RAM Top Gun-branded gun from Commemorative Firearms, as well as a custom Top Gun buckle from Montana Silversmiths. The 10-day attendance for the Wrangler NFR was 169,171.

PRCA VISION AND DIRECTION

Strong Start CEO Taylor looks back on 1st year, prepares for new challenges ahead

BY SCOTT KANIEWSKI P RCA CEOGeorge Taylor has been busy in his first year at the helm. It’s not going to slow down anytime soon, either. The direction and plan for the RCA has already begun to deliver, but there’s more to do. Taylor shared the PRCA’s vision and mission in Las Vegas, Dec. 4. The PRCA should have the best cowboys at the best rodeos and should deliver the best fan experience while positively impacting our communities and embracing the spirit of the West. In fulfilling that vision, the PRCA’s mission is to unify membership in providing an innovative fan experience, to grow the sport and to provide opportunities for members and sponsors. “The PRCA wants to grow the level of fans,” Taylor said. “We want to add more fans, and we also want to increase their level of interest.” To achieve those goals, the PRCA wants to be known by its growing base of fans as the undisputed best. It must improve and expand opportunities. The PRCA must have the best team, culture and personnel practices aligned to deliver its compelling vision. “The team at the PRCA is passionate about ProRodeo,” Taylor said. “We strive to be respectful, innovative, hardworking and results-oriented – and to live by the code of the West.” A number of significant changes are already in progress. Over the past year, the PRCA has partnered with the American, the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo, and RodeoHouston. The PRCA also has added a 13th circuit for its circuit system, digital experiences for both fans and membership. It must drive revenue growth within the sport of ProRodeo to benefit member

to watch rodeos live on their smartphones and keep up with results and standings. With a continued aim at growing exposure through media – television, social media streaming, live internet streaming with outlets such as Amazon, Netflix and Twitter – the possibilities expand exponentially not only for the PRCA and its cowboys but also for the fans, members and sponsors. With all these ideas and advancements, it made sense to honor recent changes, as well as upcoming ones, with a new PRCA logo. “Renewing the emphasis on our trademarked, single-word PRORODEO name and putting that statement at the top of our rebranding is an important element that grows recognition and exposes new fans, sponsors, members and media to the traditional values andWestern heritage that guides the PRCA,” Taylor said. “We wanted a logo that reflects the timelessness of ProRodeo. We feel we’ve accomplished that. Now, we turn our goals to accomplishing so much more.”

bringing in the Maple Leaf Circuit for the 2019 season, giving Canadian cowboys a chance to rodeo in their home country and an easier path to the RAMNational Circuit Finals Rodeo. There were also improvements in the 2018Wrangler PRORODEOTour structure. The number of rodeos on the tour increased from six to 23. Along with that, nearly 1 million fans attended Tour rodeos, as compared to the 40,000 that attended theWrangler Champions Challenge the year prior. The number of fans watching on TV and streaming online increased by 1.4 million, while the Tour payouts increased 10 times, from $649,600 to $6.6 million. Mirroring those rises, 2018 saw a 6 percent climb in revenue through sponsorship. In 2018, time-buy TV expenses decreased by $471,000, while the average audience increased by 27 percent.
