Bull rider Moore shaking off last year’s injury IN HIS WORDS J.T. MOORE

T his year, I’ve been blessed to be injury free the full year. Last year, I had a big injury – a broken jaw – which made it hard to go. God blessed me abundantly this year. I got dragged down by a bull in Fort Pierce, Fla., in a Pro Rodeo (Wide Open Rodeo). I was in the ICU for nine days. I had my jaw wired shut for more than two months.

I could’ve been here a long time ago, like when I was 18. I’m trying to take everything more seriously, getting to bed earlier, getting up earlier, drinking more water. It’s helping. The consistency is getting better, and I’m able to get past those ranker bulls a little easier. I feel like I can be higher in the world

J.T. Moore is off to a strong start in the

ProRodeo Tour standings. As of April 15, the second- year pro bull rider was among the top 24 in the Tour. The 22-year-old from Alvin, Texas, earned a good portion of his points at the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Fort Worth, Texas. He’s also 31st in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $19,893 and fourth in the Texas Circuit standings with $10,064. Last year, Moore started on his permit before purchasing his card. He finished outside the top 50 in the world standings after missing more than two months with a broken jaw.

standings, but it’s awesome being there.

I got tired of it and unwired it myself. I thought I would lose a lot of weight, but I didn’t. I didn’t have to have just protein shakes, I ate a lot of food too. I sucked it through a straw, not just drinks and shakes. I had chicken and dumplings and steak. It tasted pretty dang good, believe it or not. My mommakes the best chicken and dumplings, it wasn’t bad at all. But it’s even better when it isn’t going through a straw. I started the 2018 season on my permit, but I figured I still had a chance to win the PRCA | Resistol Rookie of the Year if I bought my card. My traveling partner Boudreaux Campbell had done the same thing the year before. I broke my jaw at the first rodeo I went to on my card. Being in the mix in the ProRodeo Tour standings is awesome. I feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing and I’m at where I’m supposed to be. I feel like

I don’t want to put down any other circuit, but I think the Texas Circuit is one of the toughest circuits there is, not only with the other cowboys but with some of the best bulls. It’s pretty awesome to be among those other cowboys, and it’s even cooler that my good buddies are there to support me along the way. I’m traveling with Boudreaux, Foster McCraw and Parker McCown. Boudreaux does everything, including the entering. I don’t think I’ve called one time, and I appreciate that a lot. In fact, he doesn’t even let me drive. I just put my hand in the rope and that’s it I tried other events, but I wasn’t the best at them. For me, there’s nothing like bull riding, nothing like it in the whole world. When I climb in the chute, it doesn’t matter what’s going on in the whole world, I’m just focused. I love it to death.

Kyle Lockett, who led the PRCA | RAM World Stand- ings as of April 15 with $75,434, isn’t planning on rodeoing full time the rest of the regular season. In Taking a Break

“That’s what gets me all the time, I don’t want to go rodeo and I enter one. Well, the day before there is this one, and the day after there is that one. The next thing you know it is two weeks and three weeks. How do you rodeo over the Fourth of July and then not stay out there the next week to go to Sheridan (Wyo.), Casper (Wyo.) and all that because it is just as good.” – KYLE LOCKETT

2018, the 15th quali- fier for the Wrangler NFR entered the Finals with $61,349.

Tour Finale The ProRodeo Tour will conclude much as it did last year, with Tour champions being crowned at the Washington State Fair and Rodeo at the Tour Finale in Puyallup, Wash., Sept. 6-9. The difference this year is that the Tour has more than doubled in size. Story inside on page 28.

COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK

Chris Bechthold, a 23-year-old from Booker, Texas, is having a strong rookie season. He’s fourth in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings as a bull rider with $17,099. He stands 5-foot-9 and weighs 155 pounds. He rodeoed on his PRCA permit last year and earned $6,699. He bought his PRCA card in September 2018.

How did you get involved with rodeo? Chris: I have been rodeoing since I was 5 years old. I did the mutton busting, calf riding, junior rodeos and then high school and college rodeos. I also roped and did all the other events, but it was not as exciting as bull riding. I remember when I was younger, I always looked up to the older guys who rode bulls. To me, they were superhuman to be able to go out there and ride bulls, and I wanted to be like them. Do you have any brothers or sisters? Chris: I have an older brother, E.J., who is 26. He rides bulls in the PRCA like me, and he also tie-down ropes. He’s recovering from an ankle injury right now.

CHRIS BECHTHOLD

What has this season been like for you? Chris: This season has been different because I’ve been able to get into some rodeos I haven’t been able to in previous years. It has been cool going to different rodeos. Last year, I was able to rodeo pretty hard on my permit and was able to get a taste of what it was like to be out there and be on the road, which has helped me this year. What does 8 seconds mean to you? Chris: Eight seconds means an adrenaline rush, and it’s fun. It’s a way to get away from everything and focus on the one task at hand. Did you rodeo at a college? Chris: Yes, I rodeoed at West Texas A&M in Canyon. It was a different experience being on your own and having to take care of your horses because I used to tie-down rope and bulldog, as well. I also had to stay on top of my classes. It was different, but I really enjoyed it. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural media and communications last spring. I saw that you also became a rodeo coach this year at Frank Phillips College in Borger, Texas. What’s that been like? Chris: I’m the assistant coach, and I focus on the roughstock events. This has been a big learning experience, and I’ve really enjoyed it. I learned a lot about myself and got to see rodeo from a different perspective. I’m trying to help kids and show them what they are doing wrong, and that has helped me as a competitor and pushed me to be better because I need to set the example for them. Especially since most of the time I’m competing against them at rodeos, and I can’t let them have bragging rights on me. What’s your schedule like these days? Chris: Monday throughWednesday I’m in Borger, helping with practice and taking care of the livestock, and then Thursday through Saturday I try and rodeo hard. Who is your rodeo idol? Chris: Ty Murray. He was great at everything, and he was the best cowboy in his day. What’s your favorite restaurant? Chris: Applebee’s. They used to have a cowboy burger that I ate there with a Dr Pepper. What’s your favorite candy or dessert? Chris: Skittles is my favorite candy, and my favorite desert is German chocolate cake. What’s your go-to movie? Chris: “Tombstone.” I like the story the movie has, and I’ve always been fond of Western movies. I have probably seen the movie 100 times. What’s the last concert you saw? Chris: I saw (country singer) Kevin Fowler at Rodeo Austin. That was a good time. What sports team do you root for? Chris: The Dallas Cowboys. My favorite player on their team right now is (wide receiver) Amari Cooper. What social media do you use the most? Chris: I would say Instagram. You can always go on PRCA’s Instagram (@prca_prorodeo) and watch good bull rides and bronc rides from guys. There are a lot of cool videos to watch. What would your life be like if you didn’t have a cellphone? Chris: I would probably be more productive and get more stuff done. I use my cellphone the most for the GPS when I’m going to rodeos trying to find my way around. What was your favorite cartoon as a kid? Chris: “Tom and Jerry.” There was always something new, and those two were always getting into something. I used to love to see what Jerry would get Tom to do and how Tomwould always have a plan to get him, and it would never work out.

On the Mend SHORT ROUND

J.R. Vezain continues rehab after breaking back

V eteran bareback rider J.R. Vezain continues to make progress after suffering a broken back while competing at the Pasadena (Texas) Livestock Show & Rodeo, Sept. 22. The injury that occurred when he was riding Frontier Rodeo Company’s Brazos Bash required surgery and has left him with mobility issues from the waist down. “I was rehabbing at Neuroworx in Sandy, Utah, since November,”

said Vezain, 27. “They have upgraded me to taking steps with bodyweight support. My wife (Shelby) is getting ready to have a baby boy (the couple’s first child) May 14, so the closer that (date) came the more we were wanting to be at home. I talked to the therapist, and we did some new testing. They set me up with an at-home program to come to do some strength training for the next six to eight weeks until after the baby comes. Then we will touch base and make a new game plan after that. My in-laws turned the garage into a gym, and we have a bunch of equipment set up.” Vezain, a six-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, returned home to Melstone, Mont., April 5. “I have been back rehabbing, and I elicit my own steps,” Vezain said. “My hip flexor is firing, my quads are firing, my glutes are firing, and those muscles are flexing. I can elicit my own steps, but my leg muscles are still so weak that I can’t hold myself up yet without assistance. I’m making progress daily.” Vezain got on a horse for the first time since his injury April 6. “I rode a horse around the place here (in Melstone), and that sure was great,” Vezain said.

Re-ride In the March 8, 2019, digital edition of ProRodeo Sports News on page 41, saddle bronc rider Jake Watson was misidentified.

Red Bluff native wins Red Bluff Round-Up Top Hand Award

Cody McKenzie was awarded the 2019 Red Bluff Round-Up Top Hand Award. The award is given to a volunteer who has dedicated their time and talents to the Round-Up. McKenzie, a Red Bluff native, has been volunteering at the Round-Up for more than 20 years. He started out helping longtime director Harvey Camacho with

the timed-event cattle. About 10 years ago, he began helping with the track events: the horse and mule races and the wild horse race. Round-Up director Zane Glines is in charge of the track events and considers McKenzie his “right-hand man,” he said. McKenzie helps Glines with all parts of the races. “Basically, everything on the track,” he said.

Wrangler NFR bull rider retires Bull riding is all Cody Rostockyj has known. However, after a recent injury scare, Rostockyj, who qualified for the 2016 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, is retiring from bull riding at the age of 29. “I was riding at the Waxahachie, Texas, rodeo a couple of weeks ago and I got hit in the head with a horn to the face,” said Rostockyj, who started his two-year term as bull riding representative on the PRCA Executive Council, April 1. “It didn’t look like a bad wreck at all, but it kind of stunned me and Rostockyj hangs it up

BY THE NUMBERS 13 The number of times saddle bronc rider Billy Etbauer won Round 10 at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. He competed in the final round 20 times in his illustrious career (missing one final round due to injury in 2002). He also placed in Round 10 two other times. During his career, Etbauer earned a check in 75 percent of his Round 10 performances. He was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2012. $15K The amount of money, $15,020, J.W. Harris earned after winning the George Paul Memorial Division 1 Xtreme Bulls event last April in Del Rio, Texas. The 2019 42nd annual George Paul Memorial event was April 26-27 and likely will be a factor in the final Xtreme Bulls standings.

paralyzed me for two minutes. I came back to after a couple of minutes and was able to move my body again, but it was tingling from my neck to my toes. The tingling went away except for my arms and my hands. I went to the ER that night and I didn’t have a broken neck or back, but they wanted me to go see a neurologist, so I did. They did an MRI and told me I bruised my spine. “The way they explained it was

Steer wrestling horse Cadillac retires Star steer wrestling horse Cadillac has called it a career. Cadillac, the PRCA | AQHA Horse of the Year in 2014 and 2016, retired following Rodeo Austin, March 30. “Cadillac is 21, and he chipped a bone in his stifle in (November 2017),” said Mark Wallace, Cadillac’s owner. “He recovered good, but in the last five or six months he started getting sore in the other stifle and compensating for his injury. His vet, Marty Tanner, and I talked about it and thought it was time.” Steer wrestler Tyler Waguespack rode Cadillac to the world championship and the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo average crown in 2016. “Hass was full of praise for Cadillac. “Cadillac was a life-changing horse for me,” Hass said. “He turned things I thought were dreams into reality.” Moving on Tyler Waguespack on Cadillac in 2016.

that it was kind of like a concussion, once you get one, they can come more frequently and easier. The same thing with my back, that I might get hit again and nothing could happen or it could bruise it easier or I could get paralyzed.” That latter possibility was what led to Rostockyj walking away from the sport. Rostockyj joined the PRCA in October 2009 and earned $363,734. He was 47th in the April 15 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $11,486. “I like holding my wife and kids, and I figured I would be smart and retire,” Rostockyj said. “Bull riding is not a forever job, you are going to have to retire one day. I think I had a couple of years left in me but would rather leave knowing I could go play catch with my kids and take them to do stuff. Having a family made it a lot easier to make this decision. The thing I will miss the most is the camaraderie between the bull riders and getting to see them and joking and cutting up.” Three Hills Rodeo Spring Buck Out on tap in May The 2019 Spring Buck Out is scheduled for May 10-11 at the Three Hills Ranch in Bernard, Iowa. The Buck Out is an annual event where Three Hills Rodeo purchases the PRCA permits for five contestants in each of the roughstock events. Not only does each contestant get their permit bought but also their entry fees paid at all Three Hills Rodeo summer rodeos. During the two days, cowboys can get on as many horses and bulls as they choose. Buckles will be awarded to the top hand in each event.
