Surging steer wrestler ready to hit the road IN HIS WORDS JUAN ALCAZAR JR.

H onestly, it was awesome to be given that opportunity to be able to go compete for that kind of money (at the RAMNCFR), No. 1, and No. 2, because of the quality of guys there and to be able to compete with those guys is another big, awesome accomplishment. As a whole – being close to home, being from here – man, it was awesome just to be able to win, period. That was the biggest amount of money I’d ever won in my life. It made the bank account a lot different, that’s for dang sure. My wife, Bobbie Jo, and tons of family and friends, including my dad, Juan Sr., were there. To celebrate, we packed up and came home. I was ready to get home. It was a long week, an emotional roller coaster. They said, ‘Let’s go get something to eat.’ I said, ‘Nope, let’s head to the house. I’mdone.’ Two- and-a-half-hours later and we were here, and it was great. I got the opportunity to win a little bit. These past three weeks, I went to Logandale (Nev.), Oakdale (Calif.), Red Bluff (Calif.) and Clovis (Calif.), and I had some success. Now, I’m home for a few weeks, then we’re going to get ready to go to some circuit rodeos. Then, we’ll go to Fort Smith (Ark.), Hugo (Okla.) and Claremore (Okla.), then hopefully crack out back at Reno. The past few years I’ve just circuit rodeoed. I tried going hard in 2016 and didn’t have much success. Hopefully come Reno, I don’t come home for a few months, and maybe we would have a shot to make the NFR.

That’s the ultimate goal. Realistically, it’s going to be there, and hopefully I’m going to be there in Las Vegas. I started shoeing horses this year, and I do day work and work for a veterinarian in Okeechobee, so I do a little bit of everything. I enjoy it a bunch. Working in a mobile veterinarian truck is very interesting. I work for Paul

When steer wrestler Juan Alcazar Jr. took home a check for $11,940 from the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla., it marked the biggest windfall in his ProRodeo career. The 33-year-old who was born in Kissimmee and now lives in Okeechobee is a lifelong circuit cowboy. Until last season, he had never cashed in for more than $18,000. This season, he’s already at a personal best, with $29,787 earned. That has him 14th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings, as of April 29. And because of it, Alcazar is planning on going hard, already hitting the California rodeos with an eye heading to the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo, a ProRodeo Tour stop.

Bryant at Arrow 5 Equine. From horses getting cut up, to removing eyes, to checking cows, it’s fromA to Z with that guy, and it’s all mobile transportation. It’s pretty cool. There’s not one specific rodeo I’m looking forward to going to. The whole Fourth of July run is awesome. From Cody, Wyo., to St. Paul Ore., to Red Lodge, Mont., that whole run is honestly what I’mmore excited about than anything. The last time I did that, it was the nonstop running one, packing up, hauling to the next one that was the most exciting part of that. The all-night drives, the day-to-day hustle and bustle of trying to make the next one is what’s exciting about that run. It’s as many as you can get to in two weeks. It’s rocking and rolling. I haven’t checked the standings. I’ve been leaving that stuff alone. I’m going to let the cards play where they’re going to play. We’ll check them at the end of September, and if it says I’m in the Top 15, awesome. If it doesn’t, it was awesome trying to make it anyways.

Big Win Jake Peterson was the only bull rider to cover eight seconds, earning $7,546 (including ground money) at the Springville (Calif.) Sierra Rodeo. The rodeo total payoff was $49,002. The permit holder from Livermore, Calif., had earned $2,381 in his career.

Bubba Boots is a great rodeo name. Is Bubba your real first name? Bubba: No. It’s Teigen. I think the last time I was called Teigen is when my mom was mad at me when I was little. I just got the nickname Bubba when I was little, and I really don’t know why but it stuck. I like the name. It seems weird if someone calls me Teigen. How did you get involved with rodeo? Bubba: My parents. They always rodeoed, and I just kind of fell into it and decided I liked it and stuck with it. My dad (Aaron) was a steer wrestler in the PRCA, and my mom (Jodee) was a breakaway roper. I started going to junior rodeos when I was around 5 years old, and my parents hauled us around and made it pretty easy. I have a sister, Makayla, 24. How has this season gone for you? Bubba Boots, a 22-year-old from St. Anthony, Idaho, is having a solid rookie season. He’s third in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings as a steer wrestler with $5,028. He stands 6-foot and weighs 160 pounds. He bought his PRCA card in December 2018 after rodeoing on his PRCA permit for three years while he was rodeoing in college. COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK

BUBBA BOOTS

Bubba: It has been decent. This was my first year going to winter rodeos, and I had a pretty decent winter. It has been a little bit slower this spring, but it has been a lot of fun. I’m traveling with Baxtor Roche (the younger brother of steer wrestler Baylor Roche, a

three-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo). It’s great traveling with Baxtor. He’s smart about stuff, and I live down there with them (in Tremonton, Utah). I practice with him and Baylor. What do you and Baxtor do to pass the time on the road? Bubba: We’re terrible golfers, but we like to go for the social aspect. Both of us are horrible. Neither one of us have hit anybody (with a ball) on the course, but it might come to that. What’s your favorite rodeo you have been to? Bubba: Fort Worth (Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Texas). It was kind of my first time going to a big winter rodeo, and there was so much going on there. I ended up winning pretty decent there. The rodeo I’m looking forward to going to most is Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days. I think it will be a blast. Where did you college rodeo? Bubba: Northwest College in Powell, Wyo. I steer wrestled, was a tie-down roper and a team roping header for the team there. I went to the College National Finals Rodeo all three years I was in Powell. My first year I made it in steer wrestling, my second year I made it in all three and my third year I made it in team roping and bulldogging. When I made it in all three events my second year, I was the reserve all-around champion. I also got my welding certificate. It has been my dream to be a PRCA cowboy. What horse are you using? Bubba: I have my own horse, a roan horse, that I’ve had for two or three years. His name is Mike, and he’s 12. Steer wrestling is my favorite event. It gets my heart pounding, and I love it. What’s your favorite restaurant? Bubba: Jakers Bar and Grill. When I’m there, I get steak and shrimp. My favorite dessert is strawberry cheesecake. Who is your go-to music group? Bubba: Nickelback. What actor would you choose to play you in a story about your life? Bubba: Mark Wahlberg. I have always liked his movies, and he seems like an inspirational guy. My favorite movie is “Shooter.” I’ve seen that movie too many times to count. What’s your biggest pet peeve? Bubba: Unmatching socks. I hate it. It drives me crazy. I can’t wear them, and if I see somebody wearing unmatching socks it drives me crazy. Who is your favorite sports team? Bubba: The Green Bay Packers. (Quarterback) Brett Favre was my favorite player. Did you do any other sports besides rodeo growing up? Bubba: I wrestled in high school. I was third in state my freshman year, and my sophomore year I took second. I wrestled at 98 pounds both years. My senior year I broke my neck wrestling. I double-legged this kid, and I was running him down. He had his hand over my head and drove my head straight into the mat, and it broke my neck. Have you ever used a payphone? Bubba: No. I think I saw a payphone at the airport in Denver this year. It was my first time flying, and I was a lost son of a gun. What form of social media do you use most? Bubba: I’m a big-time user of Snapchat. Who would you pick to win a fight between Clint Eastwood and Chuck Norris? Bubba: Chuck Norris for sure. He’s a bad man.

Thanks, Mom! MOTHER’S DAY MEMORIES

With Mother’s Day upcoming May 12, ProRodeo Sports News visited with a few cowboys about their favorite rodeo memory with their mom.

JACOB TALLEY, steer wrestler

“My favorite memory isn’t one of the big things. It is all the time we got to hang out during the downtime at the NFR. She has been there the entire time both times I made it and has been a part of it all. It is special because she has supported me my entire life, and her being there to support me on the biggest stage in rodeo is special.”

Chase Brooks

CHASE BROOKS, saddle bronc rider

“She would haul me around to everywhere in high school. She loves it. She loves videoing, being the rodeo mom. Without her support and encouragement, I don’t know if I would have made it. She’s an awesome mom, the best mom in the world.”

Jacob Talley

SHANE HANCHEY, tie-down roper

“My favorite memory is probably pretty cliché, it’s the picture we took after winning my gold buckle. I look back at it and smile knowing how genuinely happy she was for me accomplishing my lifelong dream, a dream that was all of ours as a family.”

Shane Hanchey

JAKE BROWN, bareback rider “My favorite rodeo memory with my mom was one time all my hauling partners bailed on me, so my mom stepped up and went with me. I was up in Jackson, Tenn., at the matinee perf, and we stayed in Memphis at the sketchiest hotel I had ever stayed in. People were fighting outside our room and calling our room during the night. It was wild.”

Tyson Durfey

TYSON DURFEY, tie-down roper “My favorite rodeo memory with my mom was taking her with me to the Canadian finals. I ended up winning the championship, and we drove 10 hours home together. It was one of those all-nighters, and we stayed up and talked about everything – from relationships to God to money. We had a 10-hour conversation that was definitely very special. One of the perks of rodeoing is that driving to and from each rodeo you have a lot of time to connect with your family in good, old-fashioned conversation. Especially if they’re in the vehicle with you.”

Jake Brown

HARDY BRADEN, saddle bronc rider “My favorite memory is always being able to hear my mom cheering from the stands. It doesn’t matter how big or little the rodeo is, I can always hear her.”

Hardy Braden

Steer wrestlers Talley, Parrott out with injuries Hurting SHORT ROUND

W rangler National Finals Rodeo-qualifying steer wrestlers Jacob Talley and Rowdy Parrott were sidelined recently with pectoral injuries. Talley, who qualified for the Wrangler NFR in 2016 and 2018, tore his right pectoral muscle on his second steer at the Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up, April 18. Talley had surgery April 23 in Red Bluff. There’s no timetable on how long the Keatchie, La., cowboy will be sidelined. Talley was 24th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $19,542, as of April 29. “I know everything happens for a reason, and I have no doubt I will come back even stronger,” said Talley, 28. “I also can’t thank the other steer wrestlers enough for being so supportive to me. It means a lot.” Talley placed a career-best 11th in the world standings a year ago with $145,717. He earned $65,000 at the Wrangler NFR in Las Vegas.

Parrott, who qualified for the Wrangler NFR in 2017, tore a tendon in his right pectoral muscle April 13 at the Oakdale (Calif.) Saddle Club Rodeo. “The steers were fresh, and the steer

stopped,” said Parrott, 25. “I’ve caught and missed steers like that a bunch of times. This was just a freak deal. I’m not going to have surgery. I’m just going to do six-to-eight weeks of physical therapy and try that and hopefully it heals up good. I’m hoping I can be back competing by Reno.” The Reno (Nev.) Rodeo is

June 21-29. Parrott was not in the top 50 in the most recent world standings.

Glause named new COO/Director of Rodeo Administration at PRCA

The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association has announced the hiring of Tom Glause as its Chief Operating Officer and Director of Rodeo Administration. Glause will assume the position May 15 and will move to Colorado Springs, Colo. from Cheyenne, Wyo., where he worked for two governors as the State Insurance Commissioner. Glause brings 30 years of experience in both the public and private sectors as an executive leader and attorney with a strong financial background. He attended Casper College and the University of Wyoming on a rodeo scholarship as a saddle bronc rider. He received his associate degree in business administration and a Bachelor of Science in accounting before going on to earn a Juris

Doctorate at the University of Wyoming. His involvement and commitment to rodeo is as compelling as his employment history. Glause was a PRCA contestant member, Mountain States Circuit Rodeo president and has held a variety of positions at Cheyenne Frontier Days, presently serving as vice chairman of its board of directors. Glause’s son, Seth, is a four-time Wrangler NFR qualifier as a bull rider. “It’s a great opportunity to join the PRCA team as COO and Director of Rodeo Administration,” Glause said. “I look forward to leveraging my skills and rodeo background to make a difference for our membership.”
