After seven months out, bull rider climbs back on IN HIS WORDS BRADEN RICHARDSON

I didn’t knowwhat I had drawn at him and rode him. Claremore. I asked the guys that brought the bulls. They said he was going to be a little rough in the box. I just got down on I asked what he looked like and what side he was going to be out on. They went on to tell me that he was going to leave really hard and that he jerked some kid down the other day.

keep my mind strong and my body strong. It was boring, but it worked out. I know I’ve been out seven months, but it’s not going to stop my goal, and my goal is to make the NFR this year, and I’m going to do it. Del Rio (Texas) was my first rodeo back, and I bucked off five or six in a row. Then I was up inMineral Wells (Texas) and Crockett

Bull rider Braden Richardson suffered two serious injuries and missed seven months of the 2019 season. Now healed, he went out and won the Will Rogers Stampede at Claremore, Okla., with an 88.5-point ride on Lancaster & Jones Pro Rodeo’s White Walker in May. Richardson finished 27th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings in 2018, also finishing third in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings with $62,556. The 24-year- old from Jasper, Texas, is hoping a successful summer run will carry him to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

They were trying to intimidate me. I didn’t know anything about him, so I just took my usual routine and got to ride him. I didn’t knowwhat they were going to score me. I was a little surprised when they said 88.5. I knew it was a good bull ride, but I didn’t know if I was going to win. I’d been out seven months from injuries. That was probably my 10th rodeo back. To get the win there lets me know that’s where I need to be, on the road rodeoing. It gave me huge confidence because it was one of the better rides I’ve had. I knew he wasn’t going to be easy. To still get the job done tells me I can pretty much ride anything. Doing as well as I did last season was a big eye- opener, when I proved to myself that I can hang with the guys I’ve always looked up to. I just thought they hung the moon. To compete with them, kind of be in the mix with all those guys, it boosted my confidence to know I do belong in Vegas, I believe. I missed rodeo so much during my recovery. I missed my friends. I just stayed low. I tried to save my money and

(Texas) one weekend for my sixth bull back for the year. I was 87 (points) inMineral Wells and 83 in Crockett, and I think that just started me up. I’m feeling healthy and salty. I’m traveling with Jesse Petri. We knew each other before we traveled together, but once we found out that we were both living in Palestine, we said, heck, let’s start entering together. Now, he and I travel together, and my dog, Tigger, is with me. I traveled by myself last year. Traveling with Jesse is way better than going alone. I’m glad to have him in my corner. It’s so hard to put into words what last season meant to me because that was my first time out there in the summer run, and I had always dreamed of it, always dreamed of rodeoing in the summer. I got to live it, and it was just amazing. There’s nothing like it. I’m so excited. I didn’t know if it was going to be in the cards this year, but it’s looking like it is. Now, I’m healthy, I’m riding good, I can’t wait to get back out there.

Jesse Pope, a 20-year-old fromWaverly, Kan., is having a strong rookie season. He’s third in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings as a bareback rider with $19,318, but he’s only $843 behind leader Garrett Shadbolt. Pope bought his PRCA card in October 2018. Now, the 5-foot-10, 170-pound Pope is chasing rookie of the year honors and a bid to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

What has this season been like for you? Jesse: It is going well. I messed up my right elbow a little bit in Kissimmee, Fla., at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo (in the middle of March). I took about two months off, and I’m starting to get back going again. My goals this year are to win rookie of the year and make the NFR. If I execute and win the rookie of the year, I should put myself in position to make the NFR.

JESSE POPE

Are you attending college while competing in the PRCA?

Jesse: Yes. I’m at Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo. I will be a junior in the fall. I qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo my freshman year, and I will go again in June to the CNFR. It was a really good experience going to the College National Finals the first time. I learned a lot from it, and I’m ready to go back. The plan is to win a national title this year. I’mmajoring in public relations with a minor in business. I’m scheduled to graduate in the spring of 2021. How did you get involved in rodeo? Jesse: I grew up watching bull riding on TV. My mom (Jennifer) and dad (Bret) didn’t rodeo, but they ran cows. There was an older man, George Steinberger, who lived 15 minutes from us, and he put on a bunch of rodeo schools. He had practices every Tuesday night on his bucking machine. We started going over there, and that’s how we got started. I was 6 or 7 years old. Do you have any brothers or sisters? Jesse: I have two younger brothers, Ty, 17, and Judd, 13. They both rodeo and are roughstock riders. When did you think rodeo was a dream you could follow?

Jesse: I started loving it as soon as I started doing it. When I got in third or fourth grade, there was an all- roughstock association down in Oklahoma, and that’s where we would go and compete. That’s how I got started riding bareback horses because I started riding ponies down there. I also rode bulls pretty good, but I quit riding bulls when I was in high school. I also rode saddle bronc horses. I chose bareback (riding) because I was more natural at it. What’s it like for you when you hear the whistle after a good ride? Jesse: You double-grab, get off and go party and hang out with your buddies. What was it like to win the 2018 Permit Members of the Year Challenge in December in Las Vegas? Jesse: That was a really good experience. My dad and brother (Ty) were there with me. I had been out there and watched the permit challenge. I had it set as a goal to win it, and I did. Who are you traveling with this summer?

Jesse: I’m going to be traveling with Tim O’Connell (reigning three-time PRCA bareback riding world champion) and Shane O’Connell (who qualified for the Wrangler NFR in 2018). I have been friends with Tim for a long time. We will all feed off each other, and it is all about helping each other. We are not competing against each other, we are competing against ourselves. What do you do when you’re not rodeoing? Jesse: I cowboy a lot. We run some cows, and I do day work for a bunch of people and ride a bunch of colts. When I’m in school and not rodeoing, I work at a feed lot. What’s your favorite type of restaurant? Jesse: I like going through a little town and finding a café, not a certain one. I’m a sucker for breakfast. I get eggs over easy, hash browns, bacon and toast. What’s your favorite type of dessert? Jesse: Chocolate cream pie. My go-to candy is Peanut M&M’s. What movie can you quote the lines from? Jesse: The Cowboys with John Wayne. I wish I knew how many times I have seen that movie, it is an awful lot. What type of music do you enjoy?

Jesse: If I’m just back home I will listen to old-school country like Merle Haggard. What type of stuff do you do to pass time when you’re going down the road? Jesse: We watch a lot of Netflix. I like watching The Office . What was your favorite Halloween costume? Jesse: I liked being Woody from Toy Story . I was a huge Toy Story fan back in the day. I’m pumped to see Toy Story 4 this summer.

FATHER’S DAY MEMORIES

BY CASSIE EMERSON

PARKER BREDING Bull rider

“Scott has given me so much great advice over the years that it’s too difficult to pin down what was the best. But one of my favorite pieces of advice was: your bull riding career goes fast, and before you know it, you’ll be too old to ride bulls anymore. So, enjoy it while it lasts, always give it your all, and don’t sweat the small stuff.”

Here’s to Dad! With Father’s Day upcoming June 16, ProRodeo Sports News visited with a few cowboys about the best advice their father ever gave them.

CORY SOLOMON

Tie-down roper “The best advice my dad ever gave me was your word is all you have, and that is why I try to do what I say. He always tells me you don’t have to have this or that to make it, which has been a good reminder in rodeo.”

TREY YATES Team roping header “My dad has

CURTIS CASSIDY

Steer wrestler “My dad always told my brother and me to not dip, and neither one of us dips. It has saved me a lot of money over the years considering it is $30 a can in Canada.”

KAYCEE FEILD Bareback rider “The best advice my dad ever gave me is to do what is right. You know what is right from wrong. You can feel it in your heart, and you should always do what is right.”

always reminded me that my next win is the most important one. Rodeo can be hard at times, and even if you are coming off a win, you have to keep

working to get that next win.”

Out of Action SHORT ROUND

World champion Peebles sidelined with leg injury

S teven Peebles, the 2015 PRCA Bareback Riding World Champion, will miss some time recovering from a broken fibula in his right leg. Peebles suffered the injury following his ride on Bridwell Pro Rodeos’ Roll The Credits at the Redding (Calif.) Rodeo, May 18. “A normal broken bone takes about six weeks to heal, but this isn’t quite as bad,” Peebles said. “I think I will be out three to four weeks and see how I’m feeling. If I feel strong enough, I will start getting on again. I’m just going to rest it and elevate it and then see how I’m feeling in a few weeks.” Peebles was 12th in the May 29 PRCA | RAM World Standings with $38,835. He has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo seven times – 2009-15. Peebles said the injury swelled up instantly and was like a hematoma.

Peebles

“I thought it was a hematoma because I was able to put weight on it, it wasn’t hurting and I was able to walk off,” Peebles said. “I was able to get it X-rayed just in case, and sure as heck, I cracked my fibula about halfway through. Injuries are all part of the game. I just have to do what I can to keep my upper body in shape. Hopefully it heals up good before I can take off for the summer run. I’m hoping I can be back for the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo (June 21-29).”

Rodeo announcer Chad Nicholson passes away

Chad Nicholson, a PRCA announcer since 1993, passed away May 17 in the mountains in Woodlake, Calif., in an accident. He was 50. Nicholson is survived by his wife, Jennifer Welch Nicholson, who has a PRCA specialty act, the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls. A rider-less horse was led into the arena to memorialize Nicholson at the Pony Express Rodeo in Eagle Mountain, Utah, May 25, a rodeo he had announced at since its inception. Nicholson announced at PRCA rodeos all over the country, including the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in 2002. Nicholson, who worked 100-plus performances a year, was

also the emcee for the 2015 ProRodeo Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Colorado Springs, Colo., and was emcee at the 2018 PRCA Awards Banquet in Las Vegas. Nicholson also trained the next generation

of rodeo announcers. In 2005, at the urging of his friend, ProRodeo Hall of Fame announcer Bob Tallman, Nicholson founded the Chad Nicholson Rodeo Announcer’s Training Seminar, held annually in Fort Worth, Texas. The service for Nicholson will be at 3 p.m. (PT), June 13, at the Three Rivers Lions Roping Arena, 42490 North Kaweah River Road, Three Rivers, Calif., 93271.
