Saddle bronc rider overcomes injury absence IN HIS WORDS DAWSON HAY
T his season has been a roller- coaster ride, to be honest. It’s been up and down, for sure. I had to get surgery on my knee earlier this year. I was fighting to get back into the Top 15 after that. But … it’s been my best year so far. I was out about three months. Right after (Rodeo) Houston on March 18 I had the surgery.
That’s a goal of everyone’s, to try and make it out there (to Puyallup, Wash., for the ProRodeo Tour Finale). Last year, I wasn’t qualified, so I got to go there and watch. I knew I wanted to be there this year. I ended up qualifying. Having so much success this season has been a blast. I’ve been going with Jake Watson and
At 21, Dawson Hay is a youngster in ProRodeo. But the Wildwood, Alberta, native is already looking like a longtime competitor. The son of 20-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Rod Hay won the PRCA | Resistol Rookie of the Year in 2018 and is in great position to qualify for his first Wrangler NFR this season. As of Sept. 4, Hay was ninth in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $97,578. He’s chalked up wins in Wainwright, Alberta, Airdrie, Alberta, Hermiston, Ore., and Bozeman, Mont. He also split the win at the Cody (Wyo.) Stampede. And he’s done all of that despite missing three months after undergoing knee surgery in the spring.
ZekeThurston, two other Canadian guys who are kicking butt too. They’ve had really great years, and we have a lot of fun together. Everyone’s doing well, and guys like that are super excited to watch me do well and I’m excited to watch them do well. It’s a really positive group of guys and I think that’s had a lot to do with my success this year. It’s been a successful year for all of us, but also it’s pretty easy to enjoy it when everyone in the rig is in the Top 15. It takes a lot of the pressure off and nobody is grumpy, though I don’t think these guys would be either way. It’s been cool for me to kick back and have fun and take it as serious as possible, but I think our rig has more fun than anyone else. It’s also really cool to have three Canadians in there.
The first few weeks of rodeo I came back I didn’t have a lot of success. But right before the Fourth of July, I picked up a win inWainwright and started to get my bearings back. I started to feel like I was riding as good as I was in the winter. It took almost 10 rodeos before I felt really confident again. Watching my dad when I was growing up, and my grandpa, and having rodeo in my family, going to rodeos since I was little, it’s in my blood. Watching my dad at rodeos in Canada and the NFR left an imprint. To be rodeoing like him is awesome. Rodeo is such a close family, everyone that my dad made good friends with I get to hang out with – the same people and the same stock contractors. It’s really cool to be performing in the same rodeos as my dad was.

“Winning The American dang-sure helped my year. I’ve had great horsepower (Scooter) all year. I’ve gone to the NFR first in the standings in two of the last three years and it hasn’t worked out for me. Hopefully that will change this year.” – TY ERICKSON
Hitting a Milestone
Ty Erickson was the first steer wrestler to hit $100,000 this season. The Montana cowboy has led the PRCA | RAM World Standings
since March 6, the first to come out after Erickson won The American
where he earned $50,000. Erickson was the regular- season leader in 2016 & 2017.
Movin’ on up
In just over a month, saddle bronc rider Brody Cress earned $60,465. That jumped him from 29th in the July 22 PRCA | RAM World Standings to 10th in the Aug. 26 standings with $90,325. Cress’ two biggest paydays of the month came at Cheyenne (Wyo.) Frontier Days ($12,585) and the Range Days Rodeo

What has this season been like for you? Cody: It has had its up and downs, but it has been pretty good overall. How did you get involved in rodeo? Cody: It was a family thing. We sell horses for a living all over the United States and also around the world. My parents also both rodeoed. My dad (Marty) was a PRCA steer wrestler and tie-down roper, and my mom (Sabrina) was a barrel racer. I grew up watching it and loved the sport and just started my ProRodeo career when I was 18 years old. What horse are you riding this year? Cody: I’m riding Jule Hazen’s horse, Corona. Jule started her last year, and we took her to some circuit rodeos. This is her first full year out here, and she has been doing great. Why did you choose the steer wrestling path? Cody: I always wanted to be a steer wrestler. I jumped my first steer when I was 12, and I have been hooked ever since. I also did some team roping and tie-down roping, but steer wrestling is a lot more fun. Did you compete in college rodeo? Cody Devers, a steer wrestler who grew up in Perryton, Texas, which is two hours north of Amarillo, has had a career-best season in earnings. Devers, who is 6-foot-1, 230 pounds, was 26th in the Sept. 4 PRCA | RAMWorld Standings with $47,235. Devers, 24, surpassed the $44,681 he earned in 2018 when he finished 32nd in the world standings. His two biggest paydays came at the Bob Christophersen Memorial Steer Wrestling in Killdeer, N.D., where he took home $6,819, and the San Angelo (Texas) Rodeo, where he earned $6,388. Now, he’s trying to make a late push to make the prestigious Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. COWBOY GRILLE WITH TRACY RENCK
CODY DEVERS
Cody: I went two years to Garden City (Kan.) Community College and I made the College National Finals Rodeo during my sophomore year. Then I went two years to Northwestern Oklahoma State (in Alva), and Stockton Graves (a seven-time qualifier for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo) was my coach. I qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo both my years in Alva. (In 2017 at the College National Finals Rodeo, Devers received the Harry Vold “Duke of the Chutes” Scholarship Award). What’s your favorite restaurant? Cody: I would have to go with Trapper’s (Fish Camp & Grill) in Oklahoma City. When I’m there I get the crawfish etouffee ribeye. I get unsweetened tea to drink. What type of social media do you engage in the most? Cody: I use Facebook the most. That allows me to just catch up with everybody. What would your life be like if cellphones didn’t exist? Cody: It would be tough. I would be lost. I use my cellphone for GPS, calling about steers, finding rides, making routes work, picking up horses. Who is your favorite musician or band? Cody: Casey Donahew. I enjoy his music, and I’ve seen him in concert several times. Who is your favorite sports team? Cody: The Dallas Cowboys. I have not been to a Cowboys game in person, but I want to. I never stepped inside of their stadium, but I would like to, especially for The American. Who is your favorite non-rodeo athlete? Cody: Does it matter when? I will go with Bo Jackson. I have
seen so many documentaries on him, and I think he was the best athlete there ever was. My rodeo idol is my dad (Marty).
What is your favorite holiday? Cody: Christmas for sure. What was the first job you got a paycheck from? Cody: Shoeing horses. My grandfather (Randall) taught me to shoe horses. I’ve shoed a lot of horses and still shoe horses. What is your favorite movie? Cody: Deadpool . That’s a cool movie. Ryan Reynolds is funny. What are your future rodeo goals? Cody: Without a doubt to make the National Finals Rodeo. To do that, I need to use every single opportunity I have and minimize mistakes and be on the barrier a little bit more. Just the little things.

Long-time saddle bronc rider and circuit president Croff Passes Away SHORT ROUND
J ames (Jim) T. Croff, who was president of the Montana Circuit for the past 28 years, passed away Aug. 31. He was 62. Croff, who lived in Geyser, Mont., had been battling an extreme head injury from a horse accident suffered June 10, 2018. Croff’s family will be holding a memorial service and celebration of his life in the near future. Croff also was a saddle bronc rider in the PRCA, earning $52,466. He also earned $772 riding bulls. He bought his PRCA card on Dec. 9, 1977. Croff was outgoing and friendly. He was known for his ever- present smile and willingness to help folks. Duane Walker, a longtime member of the Montana Circuit rodeo board, knew Croff for 40 years. “We were very good friends and we would go hunt and fish and cowboy and do all that stuff together,” Walker said. “He was a super-good guy. I will miss him tremendously. As a friend, he is irreplaceable. He also was a rodeo contestant, committee person and president of the Montana Circuit, so he was an integral part of Pro Rodeo in the state of Montana.” Croff grew up with six sisters. He leaves behind, his wife, Holly, daughter, Jimi Rae, and stepson, Dustin.

Rodeo Corpus Christi giving back
BY THE NUMBERS 0 The number of repeat winners that occurred during the eight stops on the 2019 Xtreme Bulls Tour. In 2018, Sage Kimzey won two events in Fort Mohave, Ariz., and Ellensburg, Wash., on the way to his second Xtreme Bulls season title and third in four years. In 2017, Kimzey also was the only rider to win two events in Xtreme Bulls Division 1 action as he took home the top honors at Fort Worth, Texas, and Lovington, N.M. Kimzey won one event this year in Reno, Nev., and added his third consecutive Xtreme Bulls Tour title. $36K Bull rider Jordan Spears won $36,465 over the Labor Day Weekend, largely thanks to winning the average at the Ellensburg (Wash.) Rodeo Xtreme Bulls Tour Finale, the Magic Valley Stampede in Filer, Idaho, and splitting the win at Walla Walla (Wash.) Frontier Days. Spears jumped 12 spots in the PRCA | RAM World Standings, from 20th to eighth.

One applicant for the Sowing Good Deeds initiative is Rodeo Corpus Christi (Texas). With more than 300 volunteers, Rodeo Corpus Christi (Buccaneer Days) has contributed to supporting education and the military in south Texas. To date, the Buccaneer Commission (DBA Rodeo Corpus Christi) has awarded more than $1.2 million in the form of scholarships and military housing support. In 2019, Rodeo Corpus Christi awarded $150,000 toward education and military support. Each year, Rodeo Corpus Christi (Buccaneer Commission) accepts applications from more than 100 of the best and brightest high school seniors in the south Texas region to compete for a spot in the Buc Days Leadership Program. The students are narrowed down to 10 boys and 10 girls. The students go through a rigorous, semester-long leadership program. They spend four weeks in the Dale Carnegie Leadership Training. They provide community service with Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House and Downtown Cleanup Opportunities. Rodeo Corpus Christi looks to improve its product. For the first 15 years, Rodeo Corpus Christi sold out the Old Memorial Coliseum (1,500-seat venue). The city built a new arena with a rodeo seating capacity of 6,500. The rodeo moved to the new arena in 2006. The rodeo maintained a decent attendance between 3,000 to 4000 per performance, but never could seem to fill the venue. Attendance became flat and the excitement in the building stagnant. In 2017, the board approved a plan to add concerts to each performance following the rodeo as part of the ticket. In the first year of the concert series, attendance jumped 30%. By year two, attendance was 40% higher than when there were no concerts. In 2019, the arena achieved its first sellout – an overflow crowd – 7,005 for a Saturday night rodeo with the Eli Young Band.
The deadline for rodeo committees to enter the Sowing Good Deeds initiative
and have a chance
to win a Massey Ferguson®
tractor is Sept. 15.
As a proud sponsor of the PRCA, AGCO® Corporation, through its brands Hesston® and Massey Ferguson, recognizes that PRCA-sanctioned rodeos contribute significant support for local, regional and national charities and organizations. These efforts by rodeo committees are making a positive impact on members of the various communities. Hesston and Massey Ferguson, through its Sowing Good Deeds initiative, want to raise awareness of these local efforts and reward one PRCA committee each year. One rodeo committee will be chosen to win a Massey Ferguson® tractor valued at $35,000 for the good work they do. For more info, go to http://www.hesston. com/sowinggooddeeds/index.html. Sundell is headed in the right direction for a full recovery, but the process is slow. Sundell, 34, won his first world title last year after finishing the season with $280,636. He earned $177,327 at the 2018 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. This season, the Iowa cowboy has been battling to secure a spot in the Top 15 PRCA | RAM World Standings. Following splitting the win at the Range
