IN HIS OWNWORDS: CODY SNOW TEAM ROPER HUNTING 4THWRANGLER NFR

W esley and I get along really good. We’re pretty much the same age. We want to do the same things and we work at it about the same way, our mindset is the same. We don’t really disagree on anything. I listen to all kinds of music. I like to keep it mixed up. When we’re traveling together, we’re all over the page. We listen to everything, from Tracy Chapman to George Strait. We both really like to rope. Every day we practice. He only lives two miles fromme. He’s over here right now. Every day we get up and rope steers all day, heading and heeling for each other. Everything we do with all our friends we go hang out together. It’s pretty laid back for a partnership deal. I moved to Stephenville and was living and roping with Dugan Kelly. Wesley was the only person that lived here and wanted to rope as much as I did. So I would go over and hang out with him all the time. We practiced together before I was 18. We ended up being pretty good friends. I roped with Dugan my rookie year, and he roped with Zac Small. The next year, Zac went At the ripe, old age of 22, team roping header Cody Snow already has qualified for three Wrangler National Finals Rodeos. And by the looks of things, he’s heading for his fourth consecutive trip. As of April 1, he was fifth in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $37,507. He was also fourth in the ProRodeo Tour standings with 1,321.47 points. Originally from California, Snow has made Stephenville, Texas, his adopted home since 2015. He and heeling partner Wesley Thorp have roped together since 2017. They finished the 2018 season fourth in the world standings with $196,773.

to school and I started heading for Wesley. It’s been working out pretty good since then. The last three years we’ve roped together we’ve never gotten down on one another. That’s what’s good about the partnership, we try to work through things more than think negative. He’s a real positive thinker and always looking toward the next rodeo instead of thinking about the last one. We’re definitely hard on ourselves. A part of us getting better is being realistic with ourselves. If we’re ever mad it’s at ourselves. We don’t have to be mad at the other one because we know the other who messed up is always way madder at himself. For how much we’re around each other, and we’re around every single day, most people get annoyed with that, we never get cross-ways with each other. It’s been super easy like that. It ended up being a good winter, but it started out just plucking along, winning little checks at rodeos. We didn’t hit anywhere big until we won second at Rodeo Austin. That helped our winter a lot. Our main job this year is to catch as many steers as clean as we can, no matter what the time is. If you catch them clean, that’s a lot easier. We tend to do better that way than if we try to be as fast as possible. The success I had at the Wrangler National Finals made a guy breathe. It eats at a guy when you don’t have a good Finals, and I didn’t have two good Finals back to back the first two years. This year, my goal is to turn as many steers as I can to give my partner a chance to catch as many steers as we can. Instead of going for rounds, just turn as many as I can, and it paid off. We placed in rounds and moved way up in the average. I was roping more like a businessman. That’s what I have to do is rope smarter, keep the fundamentals going even if the rodeo is fast.

GRILLE COWBOY

KAL FULLER, a 19-year-old from Bozeman, Mont., is having a strong rookie season. As of April 1, he was first in the PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings as a team roping header with $14,138. Fuller, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 200 pounds, rodeoed on his PRCA permit last year and bought his PRCA card in November. His family has always been involved with rodeo, and he wants to make a career out of the sport.

WITH TRACY RENCK PSN

How did you get involved with rodeo? Kal: My dad (Mike) had me pick up a rope when I was like 2 years old, and I just learned from there. Rodeo is something I have always done. What has this season been like for you?

Kal: This year has been good for me, and it has been way different than last year. I did all right on my permit last year (winning $12,559). Last year, I was just trying to get my feet wet. Now, I have my card, and it’s different because you are trying to make the Finals (Wrangler National Finals Rodeo). I learned a lot last year while I was on my permit, like trying to figure how to enter and everything that goes with rodeo. What’s your favorite event: team roping heading or tie-down roping? Kal: I’m not much of a (tie-down roper). I enjoy being a header because I’m the quarterback and I like to go fast. Who have been your team roping partners this season? Kal: I roped with Travis Woodard at the winter rodeos, and now I’m going to rope with Kasper Roy for the rest of the year. Travis (who qualified for the 2015 Wrangler NFR) knows a lot, and he’s a good guy to get in with as your first partner. Being around Walt (Woodard, the 1981 and 2007 PRCA World Champion Team Roping Heeler and Travis’ father) I also learned a lot.” What has it been like dealing with bone spurs in your hips? Kal: It still affects me today. I had hip surgeries in 2014 and 2015 on both hips. It is something they can’t fix. I have bone spurs, cartilage damage and labrum tears. It is hereditary. I tied a lot of calves when I was younger, and it just got worse and worse. I got it looked at and had my first surgery, and then three months later my hips started hurting again, and I had the second surgery (in 2015). Then, three months later, I was back in pain. I’ve been able to deal with the injury because I quit (tie-down roping). What horse are you riding this season? Kal: I have Marshall. He’s 13, and I’ve had him for two years. He’s the best horse I’ve ever ridden. He runs hard, he scores good and finishes really strong. What was it like making your debut at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo (March 21-24) in Kissimmee, Fla.? Kal: I was roping with Kory Mytty there, and we didn’t do as well as we would have liked. I did have a blast in Florida. We went to the gator farm, and we went to Cocoa Beach for a couple of days. It was a lot of fun. I want to go back to the RAM NCFR next year and win it. Do you have any brothers or sisters? Kal: Yes. I have one brother, Trace, 17, and two sisters, Mikayla, 20, and Melissa, 16. They all rodeo. Mikayla competes for Central Arizona College’s rodeo team. What’s your favorite restaurant? Kal: Texas Roadhouse. I get a steak and sweet tea. What’s your favorite candy or dessert? Kal: Cookie dough ice cream. What’s your favorite movie? Kal: I probably have a couple of go-to movies. The Cowboy Way (1994, with Woody Harrelson and Marg Helgenberger) and The Benchwarmers (2006, with Rob Schneider). Who is your favorite sports team? Kal: The Houston Astros. Who are your favorite musical artists? Kal: George Strait and Parker McCollum. If you got to choose a walk-up song before you competed what would it be? Kal: Dire Straits’ “Money for Nothing.” Do you have any hobbies outside of rodeo? Kal: Yes. I love fishing. I fish for bass, trout, anything.

What’s the coolest PRCA rodeo you have competed in so far? Kal: The Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up. I got to go there last year. I had never rodeoed on the grass before. It was a cool experience. I loved it.

KAL FULLER

What would your life be like without a cellphone? Kal: Probably better. I could throw my phone away, and it would not change my day.

R OUND THE SHORT On the Mend World champion Feild healing after Rodeo Austin injury Four-time PRCA World Champion Bareback Rider Kaycee Feild is on the road to recovery after getting injured March 30 in the finals at Rodeo Austin (Texas).

BY THE NUMBERS

The number of records broken at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Fla., March 21-24. Bareback rider Tilden Hooper had a 92-point ride on Hi Lo Pro Rodeo’s Redzilla to win the four-man round March 24 at the Silver Spurs Arena. Hooper’s score broke the RAM NCFR bareback riding record of 91 points set by Cimmaron Gerke on Kesler Rodeo’s Smiling Cat in 2004 in Pocatello, Idaho. The record amount of money earned by a cowboy in multiple events at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo. Josh Peek earned that much in 2016 at the RAM NCFR in Kissimmee, Fla. He also won the all-around title by competing in steer wrestling and tie-down roping. The combined amount of money earned by bull rider Garrett Smith ($29,711, including ground money), and team ropers Clay Smith ($25,207) and Jake Long ($25,207) at the 2019 RAM NCFR. They were the top three individual money earners in Kissimmee.

Feild, who won four consecutive world titles from 2011-14, had an 87-point ride on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Nutrena’s Killer Bee but was injured moments later. Feild, 32, was treated at Dell Seton Medical Center in Austin and was

released from the hospital April 2. Feild’s older brother, Shad, drove Kaycee home and they arrived in Genola, Utah, April 3. “Rest is so important for him, he needs to get a lot of rest and take it easy,” Kaycee’s wife, Stephanie, said. “Our community has been so wonderful. They came in and

completely cleaned our house and cleaned out our fridge and stocked it with new food and smoothie stuff for him and soups. They have been so amazing.” Stephanie elaborated on Kaycee’s condition in an interview with ProRodeo Sports News April 1. “He said what happened is the horse kind of got away from him, and he went to sit up and when he sat up it jerked him forward, and the last thing he remembered is he whacked his face and that’s what caused the fracture in his jaw. It knocked him out, and when he hit the ground he got kicked by the horse in the head.”

Feild placed second at Rodeo Austin and earned $7,050. As of April 1, he was leading the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $115,965. “Kaycee said that everything happens for a reason, and there’s a reason he needs to be home,” Stephanie said. “He knows he needs to take things slow for a while.”

PRCA Executive Council announced for two-year terms The following PRCA Executive Council members were elected or re-elected and will serve two-year terms beginning April 1, as announced by PRCA CEO George Taylor. Flynn inducted into Arkansas Sports Hall

Bull rider Denny Flynn, a member of the ProRodeo Hall of Fame from Paris, Ark., was among nine members enshrined into the 2019 Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame Class, March 29 in Little Rock. Often identified as the most talented bull rider never to win a world title, Flynn qualified for the National Finals Rodeo from 1974- 82, and then again in 1985 and set a record for most bull riding average titles won at the NFR (1975, 1981-82), later equaled by Jim Sharp. Flynn finished second in the PRCA season standings three times, losing the 1980 world title to Don Gay by a mere $188 and the 1978 PRCA title by $283. He also finished third in the world three times. His 98-point ride on Tommy Steiner’s Red Lightning at Palestine, Ill., in 1979 was a world record for a dozen years and remains the second-highest score in ProRodeo history in any roughstock event. While the 105th Clovis Rodeo will be April 25-28, plan- ners are already looking ahead to 2020. That year will present a new entrance for the Clovis Rodeo grounds that will include four traffic lanes into the parking lot. A new digital message board along Clovis Avenue will be a part of the improvements. A performance day will be added in 2020 to the Clovis Rodeo, which received the inaugural Sowing Good Deeds honor and was awarded a Massey Ferguson tractor at the 2017 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The 2020 edition of the rodeo will take place April 22-26. Clovis Rodeo makes plans for the future

PRCA Jr. Rodeo Camp in Red Bluff, Calif., a success The PRCA Jr. Rodeo Camp that took place March 23 in Red Bluff, Calif., was a resounding success. The camp was for cowboys and cowgirls ages 8 and up of all abilities. The 62 campers attending marked the largest kids camp in the 10 years the camps have been taking place in Red Bluff. “I think what does help with the camp is that we schedule it on the same weekend as a California high school rodeo that is in Red Bluff at a different location,” said James Miller, general manager Red Bluff Roundup. “It seems like a lot of the kids’ older brothers and sisters are competing at the high school rodeo and the younger ones are going over here at our camp. I think that has really helped increase our attendance at our camps.” Instructors for the camp were PRCA cowboys Justin Andrade, Jesse Kirby, Jim Banister, Zack Brown, A.J. Hamre and Brad McGilchrist. The camp was at Bunting Ranch. Miller believes the PRCA Rodeo Camp serves a purpose for participants. “I think the camp is really good because it teaches kids the fundamentals of all the events,” Miller said. “Then we have good instructors that all these kids look up to because they compete in the PRCA. It also benefits the Red Bluff Roundup because we position this camp about a month before our event and it gets the kids ready for it.

The PRCA camp has educated kids how you need to do things, so they are teaching family members rules about rodeo. The camp educates kids and their families.” Camps are geared at providing free learning oppor- tunities for cowboys just starting out that either have had little or no direction in rodeo or have been competing in rodeo and want to further learn about the fundamentals from PRCA champions. The Red Bluff Roundup, a ProRodeo Tour stop, is scheduled for April 19-21. “This (PRCA Rodeo Camp) has been a really good thing for the Roundup,” Miller said. “We have already put plans together of what we would like to do differently with it to make it even better.” The mission of a PRCA Jr. Rodeo Camp is to provide a fun, positive rodeo experience. Camp curricu- lum includes an introduction to roughstock events with an emphasis on safety, fundamentals, chute procedures, livestock safety, overview of riding equipment, injury prevention and management, fitness and nutrition, introduction to PRCA business and goal setting. Instructors deliver encouragement to participants as they pursue both their rodeo careers and scholastic endeavors.
