Summer run has bull rider aiming for the Finals IN HIS WORDS BRADY PORTENIER

T his season has actually been pretty good. I can’t complain. It’s been a fun year. I’ve been traveling with a bunch of different people. I’m not quite in the Top 15, I’ve still got work to do, but it’s been a good year. Definitely the summer has been

but bull riding was always my favorite, and I stuck it out. I probably enjoy riding more now than ever. I have a new respect for it and understand what it takes to do it. I think that makes me love it more. It’s easier said than done. I really do enjoy riding the bull, staying on something that doesn’t want you there. And I enjoy the freedom of being on the road and having all the friends I do have. And it’s not even just bull riders, everybody in ProRodeo seems to have good attitudes. They’re all willing to help each other get to where we want to go. Everybody says they don’t feel the pressure or tries not to as we get closer to the end of the regular season. I love the pressure. There are only a few times in a person’s life where you get to experience being in that type of position, and I try to let it give me fuel for the fire and thrive on it. It would mean the world to me to get to the NFR. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to ever since I realized what the NFR was. It took me a little while to realize I could actually do it or not. Now I’m just waiting for my time to nod my head there.

Brady Portenier, a 24-year- old bull rider from Caldwell, Idaho, is gunning for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification. He finished 20th in the PRCA | RAMWorld Standings last season after coming excruciatingly close in 2017, finishing 16th in the world. As of Aug. 19, Portenier was in 21st place in the world standings with $63,008, about $16,000 out of the Top 15. Portenier was in good position to qualify for the ProRodeo Tour Finale in Puyallup, Wash., sitting in 16th in the ProRodeo Tour standings with 2,092.59 points. The Top 24 qualify for Puyallup. This season, Portenier won the Deadwood (S.D.) Days of ’76 Rodeo and tied for the win at the Pile ‘O Bones in Regina, Saskatchewan. He also earned $6,750 at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.

really good for me. I had a pretty tough spring as far as getting money won, but the summer has picked up. I’ve been chipping at it, and it’s been good. Puyallup is a key deal. Going to these Tour rodeos and getting some points is big. To have that big stop toward the end of the year is going to be a big factor. If I can get a big piece of it there, it’ll definitely give me a big boost in the standings. I travel with Roscoe Jarboe mostly, but he’s had a tough year being in and out. So I’ve been winging it with a couple different guys. It’s awesome. It’s a blast. Everybody around rodeo seems to be a good guy, and in bull riding, everyone is willing to help everyone out. My dad rode bulls and I had an uncle that rode bulls. My mother and her side of the family all rodeoed. I worked a few different events growing up,

Standing 6-foot-8 and weighing 265 pounds, Denell Henderson is a natural athlete who went from playing college basketball for Oral Roberts (Oklahoma) University to wrestling steers in ProRodeo. During his rookie season, the 26-year-old from Damascus, Ark., led the steer wrestling PRCA | Resistol Rookie Standings with $47,062 as of Aug. 19. Henderson was raised by rodeo contestants – his dad is also a steer wrestler and his mom is a barrel racer. COWBOY GRILLE WITH AMBER BAILLIE

Why did you buy your PRCA card? Denell: It’s just something I’ve always wanted to do. I got tired of playing basketball, and I always wanted to rodeo, so it was a no-brainer. What are you focused on this season? Denell: My main goal is to win Rookie of the Year. Everybody who is out here is always trying to make the Finals, so if that’s something that happens, it would just be another stepping-stone. Are you competing with any injuries? Denell: I tore ligaments in my left hand when I was in North Platte (Neb.) at a non-PRCA-sanctioned rodeo. The steer pulled my fingers backwards; it tore everything in my hand. Healing has been a slow process, but I’m still competing and stretching it out every day. What rodeo accomplishment are you most proud of? Denell: So far, winning second at Reno (Rodeo in Nevada, where Henderson earned $6,671). What did you study in college? Denell: Sports Management. Did you gradu a te? Denell: I left early, I’m still 12 hours from graduating. What made you want to switch gears? Denell: Even when I was playing ball, I was always sneaking away to go to rodeos. It was just something I always wanted to do. At the time, my parents were rodeoing pretty heavily, and I always wanted to be there to go with them. What was the first PRCA rodeo you attended? Denell: (Rusk County PRCA Rodeo) Henderson, Texas, about three years ago. Growing up did you watch your dad compete? Denell: A little bit. I was always so busy playing ball, but whenever I had the chance I did. What do you enjoy most about the rodeo lifestyle? Denell: I enjoy making friends and everyone helping each other to do their best as much as possible. Who do you travel with? Denell: Tanner Brunner, Trever Nelson and Levi Rudd (fellow PRCA steer wrestlers). What’s your steer wrestling tactic? Denell: To go fast. My fastest time so far at a rodeo has been 3.1 seconds. What’s been your biggest challenge? Denell: Trying to keep healthy, not being so sore and being able to get up and keep going. Do you have a favorite rodeo? Denell: RodeoHouston. It’s a big rodeo that I’ve always watched and have wanted to be a part of. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from your dad? Denell: To never give up. What other interests do you have? Denell: I’m not very good at it but I like to play golf. Do you have a favorite sports team? Denell: The Los Angeles Lakers. Even though he’s retired, I’ve always been a Kobe (Bryant) fan. What’s your favorite movie? Denell: Creed . Is there any benefit to being a tall steer wrestler? Denell: Sometimes it has its advantages and sometimes it has its downfalls, like just being too heavy. What are you working on right now to be better at your event? Denell: It’s so far into the season, you’ve just got to roll with the punches. You can maybe fix things as you’re going but if it’s working, don’t change it. HENDERSON

Cotton Rosser selected as Rodeo Lifer SHORT ROUND

P roRodeo Hall of Fame stock contractor Cotton Rosser has been named the 2019 Legend of ProRodeo. Rosser will be honored at the 12th annual Wrangler Gold Buckle Gala on Dec. 2 at the South Point Grand Ballroom in Las Vegas. “This is a wonderful, great honor Rosser was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1995. He and his son, Reno, operate the Flying U Rodeo and Rosser Rodeo stock contracting companies based in Marysville, Calif. They produce about 50 rodeos a year. “I’m just the PR man now,” Cotton said with a chuckle. “I never imagined my rodeo career would be 2019 Legend of ProRodeo to receive,” said Rosser, 91.

Yoko Kobayashi photo Cotton Rosser waves at the stands during the Gold County Pro Rodeo grand entry in 2018.

Some people say if you’ve seen one rodeo, you have seen them all, and I have always said I don’t think that’s quite true. Rodeo is the greatest sport in the world, and I’m glad to have been a part of it for the last 70 years.” Rosser still rides a horse into the arena, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. “Rodeo is the only thing I know,” Rosser said. “It doesn’t get better than that when you ride into the arena and they play the national anthem and there is a full house.” For more than 60 years, Rosser has been known for his spectacular, flamboyant opening ceremonies at rodeos on the West Coast and for many years at the National Finals Rodeo. Rosser purchased the Flying U Rodeo Ranch in 1956, which is now the oldest continuing rodeo livestock company in the United States. In 1985, Rosser was named PRCA Stock Contractor of the Year.

like this. I’m the richest guy in the world with memories and friends. I’ve loved every minute of the rodeo business and I would do it all over again. It has been a great experience.” Rosser is the 14th man to be honored with the Legend of ProRodeo award. The others are Jake Barnes, Jim Shoulders, Clem McSpadden, Harry Vold, Larry Mahan, Shawn Davis, Dean Oliver, Donnie Gay, Benny Binion, Mel Potter, Neal Gay, Michael Gaughan and Keith Martin. Rosser is a pioneer in the rodeo industry in developing the entertainment side of rodeo. Rosser received the PRCA Donita Barnes Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement award in 2015. “A lot of rodeos we have, we have had for 60 years, like the Cow Palace, Red Bluff (in California) and Reno (Nev.),” said Rosser, who served on the PRCA Board of Directors for many years. “They even put a statue up in Reno of me (in 2014). It just doesn’t get much better. I have raised a good family and I really tried to help rodeo.

The nominees for the PRCA Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award were announced Aug. 15. The nominees are: Grant & Betsy Harris, Roy & Virginia Honeycutt, Edie Longfellow, Duane Reichert, and Jim Svoboda. The award recognizes and honors contract personnel members of the PRCA who have dedicated their lives to the rodeo industry through their commitment, hard work and contributions. The final balloting process will be conducted Oct. 1-11 for applicable PRCA members. The winner will be known and announced before the awards ceremony in Las Vegas.
